ABSTRACT
As we know that the coming days the water table is going to be depleted & shorter and there will
be less availability of water resources,Which is a big issue .As in our district Shajapur last year
annual rainfall is too low and scanty as compared with previous 5 years. these resulted in
shortage of water resources. Which affected the farmers, as their crop is going to be failure
because of deficiency of irrigation. And their production is also less. And now, they were
worrying about rabi crop .
On going through these problem we decided to work on these topic for these we discussed these
problems with our guide teacher . he introduced us a super absorbent substance ‘Hydrogel’
which can hold five times of water than its weight. He suggested us to use this substance for
irrigation i.e. it can be added in soil to capture water at the time of rain or irrigation . and will
release water only when plants need it . we found that this is the best ever solution for farmers
which they are facing due to scanty rainfall.
The present research paper will discuss about the properties and application of hydrogel. ,also it
will discuss about the use of hydrogel ( sodium polyacrylate ) a super absorbent substance in the
fields and we will discuss about the steps to be taken for creating awareness about hydrogel to
farmers and about its uses. By addition of hydrogel with the soil we can improve the water-
holding capacity of soil especially in the dry areas , also we can improve Root-zone moisture
level for better growth of plants. By this we can also convert barren land into productive land
thus together with water hydrogel can also absorb fertilizer. And many more merits. It’s a bio-
degradable substance and cause no harm to soil. It is a substance which usually used in sanitation
dippers and pads to absorb liquid.

INTRODUCTION
The cultivated and non cultivated land is about 6196 sq km district Shajapur in which 76% is
cultivated and the other remaining are fallow lands . Most of these land is kept uncultivated or
considered as a barren land due to deficiency in soil moisture or water holding capacity of soil .
This deficiency is mainly due to insufficient rainfall and less natural water resources.

 This Project was conceived as a result of a lot of concern and restlessness in the mind after
reading about and watching various news about the farmer committed suicide because of bad
harvest. These is due to scanty rainfall ,which result in the condition of drought.

 Soil moisture limits forage production potential the most in semi-arid regions. Estimated
water use efficiency for irrigated and dry-land crop production system is 50 percent ,and
available soil water has a large impact on management decisions producers make throughout
the year .

The present research paper will discuss about the use of super absorbent substance known as
hydrogel (Sodium polyacrylate) in the fields . by the addition of hydrogel in the soil we can
improve the water holding capacity of soil especially in the dry areas ,also we can improve root-
zone moisture for better growth of plants , we can also convert barren land in the productive
land and many more merits. It’s a revolutionary substance which usually used in sanitationary
pads and dippers to absorb the liquids. It is a biodegradable substance and have no harmful
effects on soil .

REASON BEHIND SELECTING THIS TOPIC.

As this year in our district Shajapur the amount of rainfall is too low compared to last
year. This resulted in the shortage of water resources .which made difficult for farmers to
perform irrigation in the fields .Which directly affected the water holding capacity of soil
and resulted in the deficiency of root zone moisture. Which is not good for crops health.
then we discussed this problem with our guide teacher also we went to Farm science
center to know more about this problem.

Our aim is to tell the farmers that how they can improve water retaining capacity of soil
and protect their crop for dying from drought.
What are the alternate solution?

 Drip irrigation
 Sprinkler
 Dam/other water bodies
These are few solutions .
*Out of these above three solutions We like to introduce a next generation solution i.e.

HYDROGEL
Using of hydrogel is the best ever solution for this problem.
They can use hydrogel to capture water from soil during rain or irrigation
and will release water in the form of tiny droplets or in the form of moisture
whenever crop needed it. Which will maintain the humidity level of soil for
good nourishment of crop and will help the crop to survive even in less
amount of water and in adverse condition.

Action plan
 Firstly we thought and throughly discussed about the theme and the
sub-theme ‘ecosystem & ecosystem services’.

 We selected the topic of current problem faced by the farmers of our

locality of insufficient irrigation to crop due to scanty rainfall.

 Next we researched on new ultimate method of irrigation (by the

addition of agri-hydrogel in soil)for scanty rainfall.

 According to our project we divided work among both of us.

 We performed few experiments to check its characteristics.

 We visited (Farm science centre) to know more the new alternative method .
 We arranged awareness camp to spread our initiatives with farmers.
Objectives
 To improve the water holding capacity of soil by the addition of hydrogel in the soil.

 To understand the efficiency of hydrogel.

 To understand the ability of hydrogel to maintain root -zone moisture level of soil .

 To understand the average amount of hydrogel to be used per hectare and about its time
duration.

 To Rise awareness among farmers about the use of hydrogel

FOR THIS WE DID 5 EXPERIMENTS

SURVEY
During our project ,we went to Agriculture offices of Shajapur area.

Discussing with farmers: we decided to discuss with some farmers.

1. How many farmers are aware about the hydrogel

2. How many farmers are practicing the use of hydrogel.
3. Some common methods of irrigation they practice.
4. Problem faced by them in irrigation due to scanty rainfall.

ANALYSIS
When we surveyed on the Awareness of farmers toward the hydrogel .Out of 38 farmers only 2%
people know about the hydrogel and 87% people don’t know about it. And 11% have no opinion
In our survey we also asked farmers about the practicing of hydrogel to improve irrigation.
Out of them only 1% farmers are using hydrogel only in horticulture and 89% don’t know about it &
10% farmers are not using it even they know about it.

 Bio-degradable Hydrogel are made from polymere based products. These
hydrogels are more biodegradable and therefore they causes no physical and
chemical harm to soil.
Hydrogel is a superabsorbent polymer. Which is referred as water retention
granules, because they swell to many times their original size, when they come in
contact with water. Two broad classes of hydrogels are soluble and insoluble.
o The soluble variety is used to reduce irrigation erosion in fields.
o The insoluble variety is used in gardens, nurseries and landscapes to reduce
frequency of watering.
Hydrogel are polymers that are physically or chemically cross linked and can
absorb large amount of water while retaining their shape. They also do not
dissolve in water and the large swelling due to water does not affect the
mechanical properties of the hydrogel . Hydrogel can be used four to five times without affecting
its quality.

 Hydrogel can hold amount of water that is many times its own weight .This
characteristics helps it to store water which can include nutrients. This water is then
released slowly negating the evaporation process which maintains root zone
humidity of the soil. This is especially helpful and useful in arid lands.
How it works..?
o Hydrogels are the cross linked monomears.
o When they come in contact with water they swell 250 times than their original size.and
convert themselves in gel.

o They locks the water . then plant will squeeze water form hydrogel whenever plant needs
by the help of roots.

o It has ability to sustain at high temperatures ( 60°C-70°C ).

o Once hydrogel is used with soil then it will give its result upto three times. And then it
will start to degredate in the soil without causing any harm.

o For better result hydrogel should be used with rabi crops.

Difference in production of crops with hydrogel and without hydrogel.

 The first view of these difference can be seen in our II and III experiments
 The difference is shown in below by the trials of IARI at delhi

 Above picture shows the increase of production of crops with use

hydrogel.
Dry land agriculture using super absorbent hydrogel.

Hydrogel can be used for dry land farming.

 It can be used for dry land crops because it holds 300times more water than a regular
soil.
 Remains stable for long period of time under high temperature (50°C to 65°C).
 Huge potential for use in agriculture ,horticulture , floriculture and nursery rising

How to use hydrogel , about quantity to be used and from where to

get it..?
To answer this question we have visited “FARM SCIENCE CENTER” and had met with
the officer Dr. G.R. Ambavatiya for these following quiries .

o Awareness in farmers about the use of hydrogel

o The amount of hydrogel is to be used per heactare. And its affordability.
o For best result which season of crop is to be planted with hydrogel.
o From where to get it ?

Result of queries
 In one acre 2 to 2.5 kg of hydrogel is to be used and will be cost about 900 to
1000 rupees approximately.
 For best result the hydrogel should be used for rabi crops and To save farmers
effort it can be mixed with seed while sowing .
 A farmer can get hydrogel from farm science center or from Agriculture science
center.
 They can get hydrogel from retailers.
 Awareness camp are going on for farmers to aware them about the hydrogel

Steps taken to promote hydrogel

Awareness Camp
 To create awareness among farmers about the usage of hydrogel.
 We organized an awareness camp in our school during Parents meeting .As In our school
most of the student’s father are farmers.
 we introduced the usage of hydrogel in irrigation method for good yield even in scanty
rainfall.
 We explained them about the usage of hydrogel ,its Amount to be used , about its
affordability.etc.
 We have shown our experiments to them

Out of them 11 farmers were agreed to practice these method and were so impressed with the
results that they have contact with us to take more information about its retailers.

We aware the students of our school as the

occupation of most of student’s father is
agriculture “ To add hydrogel in their field”
Impact on society
As when we tell farmers about our solution for the problem some of them agreed that they will
follow the use of hydrogel method irrigation .and will influence other people or farmers to follow
same.

That will help them in so many ways

 Increase in production even in period of scanty rainfall.

 Increase in water holding capacity of land.
 Decrease the chances of drought condition and crop failure.
 Healthy crop even in less irrigation.
 Indirectly it save water.

Farmers are now going to aware about the use of hydrogel in agriculture. Because it’s a
ultimate super absorbent substances which can hold a great amount of water for a good period of
time. It will help them even in adverse condition of dry and scanty rainfall. the area we surveyed
mostly suffer with the drought condition which result in crop failure or shortage in forage
production. Hydrogel is the best ever solution for these area, so that they can get good yield even
in annual scanty rainfall.

FOLLOW UP ACTION
After visiting different offices and by seeing the results of hydrogel the study team decide to aware
farmers about the use hydrogel.

We will do the following things:

1. The study team continue discussing with farmers to aware them about the usage of hydrogel to
improve irrigation for healthy crops even in scanty rainfall and about its advantages.
2.We will create a cards in hindi language so farmers can easily understand about the correct method
to use hydrogel , its time period , other many things related to our initiatives and distribute them to
farmers
3.Whenever we get a chance to discuss with farmers we will give them other information about the
usage of hydrogel in horticulture,floriculture.etc. other fields
4. Encourage farmers have to use hydrogel as best alternative to overcome with the problem of
irrigation.

After performing the experiments we concluded that usage of hydrogel

in irrigation is best alternative method of irrigation among all previous
methods i.e. sprinkler , Drip irrigation .etc.
 “As per the comparison - the water holding of soil with hydrogel is
greater as compared with normal soil.”
 “ hydrogel save plant from dying even in the condition of drought”
 “ Hydrogel increases production rate of crops thus it absorbs fertilizer too.
And prevent the fertilizer from running off the soil.”
 “ it maintain root zone moisture level of soil”

Ultimately,
“It save water while irrigation and decrease the irrigation
period by absorbing water”
