ABSTRACT

The objective of this briefing is to present an overview of the machine learning

techniques currently in use or in consideration at statistical agencies worldwide. It
outlines the main reason why statistical agencies should start exploring the use of
machine learning techniques. This outlines what machine learning is, by comparing a
well-known statistical technique (logistic regression) with a (non-statistical) machine
learning counterpart (support vector machines). After that we discuss current research
or applications of machine learning techniques within the field of official statistics in
the areas of automatic coding, editing and imputation, and record linkage,
respectively. It contains a list of machine learning applications in official statistics.
