Deadline: 8am, Saturday 27th October 2018

Exercise 1. Let f (x) = x2 − 2x. By using the definition of derivative, find f 0 (a) and f 0 (3).

Exercise 2. Consider the function f defined by

−x + a if x < 0

f (x) = x2 +1 if 0 ≤ x ≤ 1

x − b

if x > 1

where a and b are constants.

(i) Find values of a and b such that f is continuous on (−∞, ∞).

(ii) Sketch the graph of f with a and b found in (i). Is f differentiable at x = 1?

Exercise 3. Let (
