Vapor Pressure Analyzer

Pre-Installation Requirements

Introduction
Surface Measurements Systems Vapor Pressure Analyzer (VPA) system is vacuum analyzer
used in laboratories. The purpose of this document is to define an operating environment that
will provide optimal results using the instrument. The most sensitive component of the
system is the SMS UltraBalance. Small changes in the environment may affect the results of
experiments. To maintain the accuracy of the UltraBalance, it is important to follow the
guidelines listed below.

In order to ensure fast and problem free installation of your SMS VPA, please read the
following requirements carefully and return the completed form to confirm the site meets the
following specifications.

Space Required
The VPA requires a flat stable surface of 2.0m wide by 0.8m deep. A clearance of at least
1.6m above the work area is required. It should not be susceptible to vibrations from other
equipment in the lab or from excessive movement from personnel walking near the
instrument. This is important because of the sensitivity of the UltraBalance. The incubator
containing the UltraBalance should ideally be placed on a marble table (~50mm in thickness),
with the computer and vacuum pumps placed nearby. Alternatively, all of the equipment may
be placed on a lab bench fitted with an anti-vibration material. In many cases a solid
laboratory bench with a marble slab on the top is sufficient.

Lab Temperature
The lab should be maintained at a stable ambient temperature preferably between 20 to 24oC.
Ideally the ambient temperature should be regulated to stability within ±1oC day and night, as
the VPA will normally operate for over 24 hours at a time. This is necessary to maintain the
stability of the UltraBalance electronics and the incubator. The relative humidity in the lab
should be less than 60%.

Power requirements
Power should be supplied at 205-240V, 50/60Hz with a total power consumption of 3000VA.
The electrical connections require 4 wall outlets (1 for desktop, 1for monitor, 1 for ultra-
balance control box and 1 for incubator and for UK extension lead). If UK extension lead is
not allowed, additional 3 sockets are required.

For USA only:

Lab is required to supply 2 ~205V electrical outlet (20Amp NEMA Single Receptacle, L620-
R) plus 5 grounded 110V electrical outlets (NEMA 5-15P). If the lab is not able to provide
L620-R, additional NEMA5-15P outlet is required for step up transformer rated to 3000VA.

Vent facilities (Rotary Pump exhaust)

The pump exhaust should be connected to a vent facility, for instance, a fume cupboard
which is suitable for the safe removal of oil vapour and gases. If the exhaust line is connected
to vent facility, do not allow the exhaust line to become pressurized.
