The High speed Digital Signal Controller is 16bit fix point DSP having all the features of DSP
and microcontroller thus commonly known as DSC (Digital Signal Controller). The DSC
continuously monitors OHE current and voltage, along with different status input, through
CT, PT and optical isolated status connections. The high-speed micro-controller samples
these current and voltage signals through a A/D converter. The Digital Signal performs
powerful Numerical Algorithms to find out real and imaginary portion of complex
impedance (R and X) & 2ND harmonic contents of the current, RMS values of voltage and
current signals. All measurement is tuned to fundamental frequency i.e 50Hz, thus relay
remain stable during distorted waveform generated electric loco-motive. All these measure
values are then used for different protection function such as Distance protection, Wrong
phase protection, over current protection etc.
The OHE voltage and current are measured through external CT and PT. Further these
signals are converted in low level signal through internal current & voltage transformer.
These Analog signals are pass through anti aliasing filter which remove all high frequency
distortion and limit bandwidth. These sine wave signals are then applied to ADC converted
through Analog multiplexer. The ADC converter is having 14 bit resolution with internal
sample and hold arrangement. The DSC takes 16 samples per cycle of voltage and current
signal. The DSC save these samples in to circular memory buffer in non volatile memory.
After any fault DSC save all timing information and freezed memory buffer. There are 10
such memory buffer which can be down loaded for further post analysis of fault as a
disturbance recorder.
The power supply module is a specially designed robust DC – DC converted designed using
modern PWM based Switching mode technique. It convert 110Vdc station battery supply to
the 12V and 24Vdc low voltage supply for relay electronics and control circuit. It also
provides necessary isolation from station battery. The Normal operating voltage range is
77Vdc – 260Vdc. The ADR219C is having special relay contact marked as PROTH if any
thing goes wrong in power supply module then this contact become open can be used to
provide local as well as remote tale signaling ALARM.
The relay is having total 8 nos of dual LED of high intensity for easy identification of type of
fault for easy user interface. Digital status input and controlled output are fully programmable
via key pad interface.

Protective relays, although generally of robust construction, require careful treatment prior to
installation on site. Upon receipt, relays should be examined immediately, to ensure no
damage has been sustained in transit. If any damage found please contact to m/s. Ashida
Electronics Pvt. Ltd. Thane
3.2 UNPACKING
Operation manual and test report are there store this property for further use. Care must be
taken when unpacking and installing the relays so that none of the parts is damaged or the
setting altered. Relays must only be handled by skilled personnel. The installation should be
done by clean, dry and reasonably free from dust and excessive vibration. The site should be
lit to facilitate inspection. Relays that have been removed from their cases should not be left
in situations where they are exposed to dust and damp. This particularly applies to installation
which are being carried out at the same time as construction work
The relays use components that are sensitive to electrostatic discharges. The electronic
circuits are well protected by the metal case and the internal module should not be withdrawn
unnecessarily. There are no setting adjustments within the module and it is advised that it is
not unnecessarily disassembled. Although the printed circuit boards are plugged together, the
connectors are a manufacturing aid and not intended for frequent dismantling; in fact
considerable effort may be required to separate them. Touching the printed circuit board
should be avoided, since complementary metal oxide semiconductors (CMOS) are used,
which can be damaged by static electricity discharged from the body.
C H AP T E R 3 . H AN D L I N G Page 4/7
• Before removing a module, ensure that you are at the same electrostatic potential as
the equipment by touching the case.
• Handle the module by its front plate, frame or edges of the printed circuit board. Avoid
touching the electronic components, printed circuit track or connectors.
• Do not pass the module to another person without first ensuring you are both at the
same electrostatic potential. Shaking hands achieves equipotential.
• Place the module on an antistatic surface, or on a conducting surface which is at the
same potential as yourself.
• Store or transport the module in a non conductive bag.
If you are making measurements on the internal electronic circuitry of an equipment in
service, it is preferable that you are earthed to the case with a conductive wrist strap. Wrist
straps should have a resistance to ground between 500k-10M ohms. If a wrist strap is not
available, you should maintain regular contact with the case to prevent a build-up of static.
Instrumentation which may be used for making measurements should be earthed to the case
whenever possible.
More information on safe working procedures for all electronic equipment can be found in
BS5783 and IEC147-OF. It is strongly recommended that detailed investigations on electronic
circuitry, or modification work, should be carried out in a Special Handling Area such as
described in the above-mentioned BS and IEC documents.
3.4 STORAGE
If relays are not to be installed immediately upon receipt they should be stored in a place free
from dust and moisture in their original cartons. Where de-humidifier crystals will be impaired
if the bag has been exposed to ambient conditions and may be restored by gently heating the
bag for about an hour, prior to replacing it in the carton
Dust which collect on a carton may, on subsequent unpacking find its way into the relay, in
damp conditions the carton and packing may become Impregnated with moisture and the de-
humidifier will lose its efficiency.
Storage temperature: -25°C to +70°C

We recommend to protect the auxiliary source connection by using a fuse of type NIT or TIA
with a breaking capacity of 8A. For security reasons, do never install fuses in current
Transformers circuits. The other circuits must be protected by fuses.
3.5.2 Earthing
Each equipment must be connected to a local earth terminal by the intermediary of a M4
earth terminals. We recommend a wire of minimal section of 4 mm², connected to cabinet bolt
.
NOTE : To prevent any electrolytic risk between copper conductor or brass conductor and the
back plate of the equipment, it is necessary to take precautions to isolate them one from the
other. This can be done in several ways, for example by inserting between the conductor and
the case a plated nickel or insulated ring washer or by using a tin terminals.

6.5 Description
ADR219C is second generation Numerical Integrated Feeder Protection Relay for Traction
Application. It consist all the necessary protection and monitoring functions required
protection used in traction sub-station. The general block diagram of internal hardware of
relay is as shown in fig. The brief description of block diagrams is as follows.
The DSC takes 16 samples per cycle of voltage and current
signal. The DSC saves these samples in to circular memory buffer in non volatile memory.
After any fault DSC save all timing information and freezed memory buffer. There are 10
such memory buffers which can be down loaded for further post analysis of fault as a
disturbance recorder.
The power supply module is a specially designed robust DC – DC converted designed with
modern PWM based Switching mode technique. It convert 110Vdc station battery supply to
the 12V and 24Vdc low voltage supply for relay electronics and control circuit. It also
provides necessary isolation from station battery. The Normal operating voltage range is
77Vdc – 260Vdc. The ADR219C is having special relay contact marked as PROTH if any

Apart from basic protection functions. Relay is continuously monitors its internal and external
hardware through different status flags. There are two types of status flags 1) Logical status
such relay operation, setting change etc. these are generated with in relay. 2)Tthere are
opto-coupler inputs S1 – S7, which are connected to external contacts.
Any change in logical or physical status is recorded as event. Such event is kept in internal
non-volatile memory along with time stamp. Up to 100 such event can be store in relay
memory. The events are in First in First out format. i.e. if event after 100 event if data is not
down loaded and next event occurred then relay overlap oldest event. These events can
download for detailed analysis of any operation.
Apart from Event record Relay also record actual waveform of current as well as voltage
along with all digital and logical status during fault condition. Up to 10 such waveform can be
recorded, the duration of disturbance record is 45 cycle pre-fault and 5 cycles post fault.
This waveform can be downloaded through communication port for further analysis. The
Disturbance buffers are also in First in First out format. i.e after 10 fault next fault will over
write in 1st fault.

8.1. General
After every fault, relay captures numbers of data which can be very useful to fault analysis.
Following is the summery of data which can be given by relay
1) Measurement value: The relay is connected to CT which samples the current signal and
calculates the number of different values from these signals. These values are available
whenever master demands. (Here master means connected PC or SCADA RTU) The
ADR219C gives RMS current information.
2) Event Value: Apart from basic protection functions. Relay continuously monitors its
internal and external hardware through different status flags. There are two types of
status flags 1) Logical status such as relay operation; setting change etc. these are
generated with in relay. 2) There are opto-coupler inputs S1 – S7, which are connected to
external contacts. Any change in logical or physical status is recorded as event. Such
event is kept in internal non-volatile memory along with time stamp. Up to 100 such event
can be stored in relay memory. The events are in First in First out format. i.e. if event after
100 event if data is not down loaded and next event occurred then relay overlap oldest
event. These events can download for detailed analysis of any operation.
3) Fault History: After the fault relay shall latch all fault values along with real time these
values are known as fault history. Last 10 fault history is available on relay display and
on communication port. Details of values are given in user interface
4) Disturbance record: Apart from Event records Relay also stores actual waveform of
current as well as voltage along with all digital and logical status during fault condition. Up
to 10 such waveform can be recorded, the duration of disturbance record is 45 cycle pre-
fault and 5 cycles post fault. This waveform can be downloaded through communication
port for further analysis. The Disturbance buffers are also in First in first out format. i.e
after 10 faults next fault will over write in 1st fault
To read this fault information two communication ports are provided 1) RS232 at front and
another RS485 at rear. The front port is accessible by opening from cover. As shown in
picture no. 8.1. The relay use 3 wire communication port. (RX, TX and GND) hand shaking
signal are not used such RTS, CTS, DSR DTR.

ADR219C are fully numerical in their design, it has self supervision function continuously
keeping track on its internal hardware and the movement, it detects failure of any component,
it gives message on LCD display. So with this important function the commissioning tests
need not to be as extensive as with electromechanical & static relays. To commission
ADR219C relay, It is only necessary to verify that its functioning correctly. At the time of
commissioning of ADR219C relay following test equipments are sufficient.
Terminal Reference:
For external interface the relay is provided with 2 terminal blocks. Each terminal block is
having 28 terminals, thus there are total 56 terminals. Each terminal is covered with high
grade insulating material. Further extra dummy terminals are provided between CT’s and
other circuits to avoid any flash over.
The terminal block is removable and having CT shorting arrangement, which make
relay draw-out type.
These product checks cover all aspects of the relay which should be checked to ensure that it
has not been physically damaged prior to commissioning and is functioning correctly and all
input quantity measurements are within the stated tolerances.
Functional tests of relay is carried out as per test report given in Annexure-I
9.2. INSTALLATION
Ensure relay wiring as per appropriate wiring diagram on back terminal of relay and as given
in Annexure. All screws on the CT, PT, Aux. supply and other terminal wiring to be properly
tightened.
a. CT secondary to be connected to the relay CT terminal with proper polarity check (i.e.S1
to start and S2 to finish)
b. PT secondary to be connected to the relay PT terminal with proper polarity check (i.e.P1
to start and P2 to finish)
c. Connect auxiliary supply input of the relay with proper polarity as positive supply mark
with +Ve and negative supply as –Ve on back sticker. The supply rang is 77- 250.
Confirm the auxiliary supply before energizing the relay and it should be within range.
d. Trip contact connection as per given schematic diagram.
e. Alarm and Tele-signal contact connection as per given schematic diagram.
f. Extra Annunciation contact connection as per requirement at site. Selectable contacts are
provided.
e. Trip circuit connection as per diagram. Care must be taken to connect CB NO/NC
connection to terminal T1/T2; wrong connection may affect the relay function.
Check external wiring corresponding to appropriate relay diagram. The reference ferrule no.
of external wiring and relay back sticker on top of the metal box.
The following checks and precaution must be taken before installing the relay.
a. Please check the correct working procedure so as to ensure safety as per the equipment
documentation.
b. During installation please confirm that any disassembly of the equipment may expose
parts at hazardous voltage. Electronic parts may be damaged if suitable electrostatic
discharge (ESD) precautions are not taken.
c. That if there are any exposed terminals and if the equipment is not electrical isolated
such exposed terminals may have hazardous voltages which are fatal and may damage
equipment.
d. To prevent the situation as mention in Para ‘C’ please confirm that there are no exposed
terminal, no exposed parts, and the electronic components may damage if electrostatic
discharge precaution is not taken.
e. Voltage and current connection should be made using insulated crimp termination to
ensure that terminal block insulation requirement are maintained for safety.
f. To ensure that wires are correctly terminated, the correct crimp terminal and tool for wire
size should be used.
g. The equipment must be connected in accordance with the given connection diagram.
Do not open the secondary circuit of a live CT since the high voltage produced may be lethal
to personnel and could damage insulation. Generally, for safety, the secondary of the line CT
must be shorted before opening any connection to it. For ADR219C, terminal block for current
transformer termination has automatic CT shorting on removal of the module. Therefore
external shorting of the CTs may not be required. But as standard practice it is advisable to
short CT secondary before removing relay from service
Insulation testing may leave capacitors charged up to a hazardous voltage. At the end of each
part of the test, the voltage should be gradually reduced to zero, to discharge capacitors.
9.2.5.1. CT Polarity
Ensure proper CTs are connected as per required maximum load current and their polarity.
CT polarity can be checked by following method :
CT Secondary is to be connected to the relay CT terminal with proper polarity check (i.e. S1
to start and S2 to finish).
9.2.5.2. Earthing
Earthing sticker is put on the bottom screw of the equipment box at the back side of the relay.
Ensure the relay earthing connected to the local earth bar with several relays present, make
sure that the copper earth bar is properly installed for solidity connecting to the earthing
terminal of each relay equipment box.
This will ensure proper relay installation in protection panel and wiring.
9.3. COMMISSIONING
After installation of relay following check should be made before switch is on of CB. All
commissioning test should be done with proper POWER BLOCK. As per SG and ACTM
prevalent practice under railway practice.
• Check that the external wiring is correct to the relevant relay diagram or schematic
diagram.
• The relay diagram number appears on the rating label on the top of access cover on
the relay,
• The connections should be checked against the scheme (wiring) diagram.
• Check the wiring against the schematic diagram for the installation to ensure
compliance with the customer’s normal practice.
• Without energizing the relay measure the auxiliary supply to ensure it is within the
operating range.
• The current and voltage transformer connections must remain isolated from the relay
for these checks. The trip circuit should also remain isolated to prevent accidental
operation of the associated circuit breaker.

Input Opto-Isolators
• The Relay is having 9 digital inputs
• This test checks that all the opto-isolated inputs on the relay are functioning correctly.
• The opto-isolated inputs should be energized one at a time, as per the external wiring
diagram. Ensure correct polarity, with the negative DC voltage applied to the S-COM
contact.
• Also positive DC voltage applied to the TC-COM and negative Status T1 (NC) and T2
(NO) from Breaker contact for Trip Ckt Supervision of Breaker concerned.
• If possible, the voltage applied to the opto should be generated by operation of the
actuating device which opto normally monitors. If an opto input is assigned (circuit
breaker open), then correct wire routing and indication is best ascertained by
movement of the real contacts, or a test short connected across them.
• Opto inputs are polarity sensitive, and DC rated only. Do not energies from an
alternating current supply.
• The status of each opto-isolated input can be viewed in the Status window.
• The Trip Ckt. Supervision can be viewed in the Error Log Window in main menu.
Output Relays:
• The Relay is having 11 digital output contacts (control contact).
• This test checks that all the output relays are functioning correctly. It can also be used
to verify that output contact wiring is routed to the correct location, via the
panel/cubicle wiring.
• Connect a continuity tester across the terminals corresponding to the output relay
being tested, as given in the external connection diagram.
• Output contacts will be operated by manual commands (by both relay communication
software and by connecting secondary relay test kit and generates appropriate
event). Ensure that contact operation is permitted, without dangerous/unwanted
consequences. For example, operation of contacts assigned to trip or close duties
should only be undertaken if the CB is locked for no operation, or if operation is
permitted.
• The output relays should be energised one at a time. The means of operating
contacts is within the Control and Testing
• Relay Test allows the user to apply the test by selecting with default settings. The
selected contact will be operated for 1 second. Operation will be confirmed by the
continuity tester operating for a normally open contact and ceasing to operate for a
normally closed contact. Measure the resistance of the contacts in the closed state
• It should be ensured that thermal ratings of anything connected to the output relays
during the contact test should not exceed. The procedure for the test is not exceeded
by the associated output relay being operated for too long. It is therefore advised that
the time between application and removal of contact test is kept to the minimum.
Test:
• Connect the Current Injector terminal to input output of Bus-Bar before and after CT
with proper polarity.
• Connect the voltage Injector terminal to Bus-Bar and Earth with proper polarity.
• Adjust Current and voltage value to at least 50% of rated value.
• Check display on relay. the value of R,X ,V , I and angle should match with actual
Primary value (Provided correct CT/PT ratios are feed in to relay setting.)
9.3.3 Communications
All Relays have two Separate communications port 1st RS232 on Front for local testing
and 2nd RS485 at rear for SCADA. The unit uses IEC870-5-103 communication protocol.
RS 232 port
This test should only be performed on the front panel on module enables establishing
communication with a personal computer with the preloaded application software supplied by
the ASHIDA within the distance of 15 meter.
The relay has Continuous monitoring of module’s internal hardware and alarm generation in
case of failure of any critical components, an Error code is displayed in respective window of
front display & respective ERR-LED glow with annunciation contacts marked PROTH. will
change its contact from NC to NO.
Following tables give details of different action take by relay if any fault is detected in
hardware and action to be taken.
9.5 MAINTENANCE
• The ASHIDA protection relay is practically maintenance free operating under the normal
environmental conditions.
• The relay modules include no parts or components subject to an abnormal physical or
electrical wear under normal operating conditions.
• If the environmental conditions at the relay operating site differ from those specified i.e.
temperature, humidity, or if the atmosphere around the relay contains chemically active
gases or dust, the relay is ought to be visually inspected in association with the relay
secondary test.
• If any other modification is made without the express permission of Ashida T&D, it will
invalidate the warranty.
• For this reason only qualified personnel may work on or operate this device.
! Before any work is done in the terminal strip area, the device must be isolated.
! Before starting testing, open any triggering circuits for external devices so that no
inadvertent switching operations will take place.
