Aim: - Study of refrigerant gas charging in the refrigeration system

Description: -

The refrigeration system is said to be suitable for the gas charging when the
all faults has been resolved and the leak & vacuuming has been done properly.

If the system is domestic or low capacity unit type then in such type of
systems gas charging is done by the low side which is called as ‘low pressure gas
charging’. While the system consist of larger capacity then in such cases the gas
charging is done through high side which is known as ‘high pressure gas charging’.

Procedure: -

 Low pressure gas charging –

1. Make the proper arrangement of all the required tool and raw material
which is required for doing the gas charging.
2. After maintaining the proper vacuum value close the compound gauge
valve & by turn offing the vacuum pump remove the charging line from
the pump.
3. Now connect the removed charging line to the service cylinder which is
filled with the required refrigerant. Invert the cylinder as shown in fig 1
4. Now purge the charging line by opening the service vale of the cylinder.
5. Now slowly open & close the compound gauge low side valve for 10 - 15
seconds of time interval due to which the refrigerant will enters into the
system. Do this until gauge will not shows the reading between 0- 10 Psi.
6. Now the system will be charged with the atmospheric pressure of gas
amount in it.

7. Start the system. Check & measure the starting supply voltage and
current reading by using the multi meter.
8. As the system is running due to which it will goes towards the vacuum
reading on the gauge. Now open and close the service cylinder valve
slowly after 15 seconds of time interval and charge the refrigerant until
standard suction pressure and temperature is not achieved.

 high pressure gas charging –

1. When charging a refrigeration system from the high side, the system
should be turned OFF.
2. The refrigerant gas service cylinder is placed upside down so that only
pure liquid refrigerant leaves the cylinder
3. Now connect the charging line to high side service valve and service
cylinder valve by means pressure gauge.

Note that once you start the system running you will not be able to charge on
the high side because the head pressure out of the compressor will be higher
than the pressure in the service cylinder which will push refrigerant back
into the cylinder.
