348-5430 Multi-Tool Group

Seven Diagnostic Tools in One Handheld Unit

Dealer Service Tools’ 348-5430 Multi-Tool Group elevates your technician’s field
diagnostics capability to a new level. This single tool contains the functionality for a
blowby/airflow indicator, a signal generator and counter, an electronic position indicator,
an engine timing indicator, a Multitach 2, a Digital Thermometer, and a Fuel Flow Monitor.

• Seven-tool functionality loaded at the factory – Activate any and all of the tools
that you need. Once activated, the tool functionality remains permanently
available from the menu.
• Field-proven components – Designed and manufactured for reliable performance
day in and day out.
• Multi-generation plan – Future software updates and license cards will allow you
to load and to activate additional functionality
348-5430 Multi-Tool Group

Build Up and Activate the Individual Tool Functionalities According to the Growing
Demands of Your Service Operation
The concept of the 348-5430 Multi-Tool is simple…provide the functionality of several diagnostic tools in a single, menu-driven,
handheld unit. The multi-tool has the software for seven individual tools preloaded: a blowby/airflow indicator, an electronic position
indicator, a signal generator and counter, an engine timing indicator, a multitach 2, a digital thermometer, and a fuel flow monitor.

The technician activates an individual tool’s functionality by inserting the appropriate software license card. Once activated, that
specific functionality remains permanently accessible from the menu. If more than one functionality has been activated, the multi-tool
will display data from only one tool at a time. Additional license software cards can be purchased as service requirements dictate.

Currently, the multi-tool replaces seven existing tools. Additional functionality will be offered as software updates which will
be activated with software license cards. The 348-5430 Multi-Tool Group sets a new standard with a diagnostic tool that grows
according to the demands of your service operation.

case could damage the Multi-Tool.

The Multi-Tool unit itself is the diagnostic tool. It features a bright

color display with large digits that are easy to read in the sunlight.
Its large, left and right-handed buttons are easy for technicians to
use, even with gloved hands.

Blowby/Airflow Indicator

The blowby/airflow indicator allows the technician to

measure the volume of blowby gases released through the
crankcase breather or the air velocity through a component
such as a radiator core. Blowby measurements provide
helpful information when planning engine repairs. Airflow
measurements identify plugged or partially restricted areas of
the cores.

Both large and small blowby groups are available.

The large blowby group checks blowby on 3500 Series and 3600
Series engines, including ACERTTM models as well as on the
larger 300 Series Engines. The small blowby group is used on
engines smaller than 3500.

The blowby/airflow indicator displays blowby and airflow. It

also displays strip charts, maximums, and minimums with the
differences. The sample rate is adjustable, and the technician
can easily select between SAE and metric units of measure.

If you currently have the 8T-2700 Airflow/Blowby Indicator

Group, you can use the 8T-2685 Probe with the Multi-Tool.

Signal Generator Group with Counter

The signal generator group is primarily used to simulate the

signal from a magnetic speed pickup for troubleshooting
electronic controls on transmissions. It also serves as a
frequency counter to measure pulsating AC or DC inputs.
The signal generator group can be used for calibration of a
number of electronic diagnostic tools. As part of the Multi-
Tool Group, this signal generator group allows the technician
to set frequency and amplitudes simply by pushing a button.
(Amplitude +- 4 Volt or 0 to 8 VOLT)

All of the cables in the 285-0899 Signal Generator Group (with

Counter) were part of the 8T-5200 Signal Generator/Counter
Group. These cables can be used with the Multi-Tool. The five-
pin DIN adapter, which is part of the basic 348-5430 Multi-Tool
Group, must be used to connect these cables to the diagnostic
interface module (Channel 4).

Engine Timing Indicator

The engine timing indicator allows your technician to

measure an engine’s fuel injection timing. During the timing
test, the Multi-tool can chart engine RPM’s versus degrees on
the display. For diesel engines, the Multi-tool must be used
with the existing 8T-5301 Diesel Engine Timing Adapter Group
and the 285-0897 Engine Timing Pickup Group. When used
with the existing 6V-9060 Gas Engine Timing Adapter Group
and the 285-0897 Engine Timing Pickup Group, the timing
indicator will check the engine timing on natural gas engines.
The timing indicator also can check the automatic timing
advance unit on engines so equipped.

The 6V-3093 Transducer Adapter, the 6V-2199 Transducer

Adapter, the 6V-2197 Transducer, and the 5P-7362 Signal
Cable Assembly are parts of the 8T-5300 Engine Timing
Indicator Group. Dealers who have these cables do not have
to purchase them.

Engine Timing Indicator Electronic Position Indicator

The electronic position indicator replaces a mechanical dial

indicator in applications where mechanical indicators cannot
be used. This includes applications such as rack measurements
on an operating engine or any other rapidly changing dynamic
reading. This tool displays displacement, creates a strip chart,
and identifies maximum and minimum values with differences
shown simultaneously. The technician can select SAE or metric
units, and can adjust the sample rates. The cable in the 285-
0898 Position Indicator Group was part of the 8T-1000 Electronic
Position Indicator Group and can be used with the Multi-Tool.

Multitach II Group
The multitach is used to measure rpm, frequency, and show
engine set point. The engine set point indicator captures and
displays set point rpm. The Hz frequency meter measures
other signal frequency. The multitach also displays minimum,
maximum, and the difference values of inputs.

The Multitach II application is a four channel digital/

analog tachometer. It is actually three instruments in one, a
Programmable Tachometer, an Engine Set Point Indicator, and
a Frequency Meter. The following features are included in
Multitach II:

• Can display 4 digital or analog displays simultaneously

• Engine set point indicator captures and displays set
point RPM (1 channel only)
• Hz frequency meter
• Displays minimum, maximum values of inputs
• Can display 4 strip charts simultaneously

The Multitach II application accepts many different types of

pickups used with the former Multitach II. Each input can
be programmed separately with different PPR (Pulses per
Revolution) values for each input.

Digital Thermometer

The 308-7267 Digital Thermometer provides a fast method

of measuring temperature. The thermometer is used to
analyze overheating problems; and it is capable of reading the
temperature of transmission and engine lubricants, and fluids
in cooling systems and hydraulic systems, as well as engine
exhaust temperatures. The thermometer has the capability
of measuring four individual temperatures, recording the
minimum and maximum temperature for each of the channels
and calculating two differential temperatures from four
inputs. This application uses probes that are designed to be
used with Caterpillar Probe Seal Adapters.

Fuel Flow Group

The new 308-7271 Fuel Flow Group uses new state-of-the-

art dual turbine flowmeters. The meters have an extremely
wide flow range of 50 to 3900 gallons per hour. They are
not sensitive to flow direction and do not require flow
straightener tubes. The meters read temperature corrected
volumetric flow. They also have built in screens to protect
the turbines from contamination in the fuel lines. The
308-7271 Fuel Flow Group uses the Multi-Tool/Fuel Flow
application to power the flowmeters and display fuel data.

The fuel monitor application works with the Caterpillar

Flowmeters: 179-0700 with 179-0701, 154-8104, 154-8103,
168-7745, 168-7735, and 308-7273.

The FT3098 cable connects the Multi-Tool to gear type fuel

flowmeters 154,8104, 154-8103, 168-7745, and 168-7735. The
179-0700 with 179-0701 connects using a standard 6V-2198
cable.
