Summative report
AICTE sponsored Faculty Development Program titled “Smart Grid Challenge And
Opportunities” Conducted by EEE Department ,GCT, Coimbatore from 29/05/2013 to
11/06/2013 has been given elaborate idea about smart grid technology. Today’s increasing
demand in power could not be met with conventional sources like Coal, Nuclear and Hydro etc.
Present day power supply is delivered from generating station to load centre and power flow is
unidirectional. The smart grid technology is allowed every consumer to act as a producer of
electricity by his/her own sources like photovoltaic and wind mills. Each consumer could able
to expert power to utility grid after satisfying their own needs. This smart grid technology
involves smart meters in consumer side communication facility. The issues like frequency and
voltage associated with grid integration using renewable energy sources was dealt. HVDC and
FACT and wide area monitoring (WAMS) system with respect smart grid were given. Real time
load dispatching idea also given .
With rapid increase in power transmission capacity of power system networks, it has
become essential to design and develop reliable, compact ,cost-effective insulation systems .To
enhance the reliability of the power system network, testing of power apparatus for its
performance is very essential. It was therefore very important to on the recent trends in the
high voltage testing techniques.
This program is help to update knowledge in the techniques for testing of power
apparatus and understanding the performance characteristics in insulation system . the
program addressed the following topics:

Summative report
This program has exposed different relays and relay settings for over voltage relays,
over current relays, earth fault relays, differential relay and numerical relays. Relay
coordination and selection of relay idea was given. This program exposed way of dealing the
relay in terms of setting and current calculation.
Summative report
This program taught management skills and effective communication between personnel. It
gave the details of effective way of time management in one’s work life by the leaky bucket
concept. It gave the idea how to conserve time for fruitful purpose like doing research, balancing
family and office. it also gave idea how to control emotions by deep breathing technique ,how to
influence others and way others influencing us. The training gave details how to avoid
miscommunication and false perceptions, improving interpersonal relationship through trust,
recognizing and responding to interpersonal conflicts and exploring self and others in the
communication process. This program also taught how a teacher be liked by students in class
room and managing students in classroom. Overall this program was useful to understand the
management skills required for faculty to deal the student ,their collogues and superior. This
program was arranged to interact with one to one and roundtable manner.

This program aimed to meet the challenges between industry and academic institutions. it
exposed various lacking of students who are coming out of college after getting degree lick lack
communication English, lack of interest to learn new things, lack of problem solving capacity
and fundamentals in the area of chosen branch. one way reduce this gap is to expose the
students industry environment like teaching hospital model happens in medical education
.other brought out is lack of exposure for faculty industry environment .hence faculty too be
trained in industry environment .other way institution can utilize the service of industry
personnel to train the students in specific area by having some credit courses. This courses will
be taught by industry expert and evaluated by him/her self. The idea of finishing school training
for students of final year given.In this concept students will be given training in the specific area
of industry need and they have to be recruited by concerned industry for their requirement.
