About TCS:

Tata Consultancy Services Limited (TCS) is an Indian multinational information


technology (IT) service and consulting company headquartered in Mumbai. It is a
subsidiary of Tata Group and operates in 149 locations across 46 countries.
TCS is the largest Indian company by market capitalization. Tata consulting
services is now placed among the most valuable IT services brands worldwide. It is
the world's largest IT services provider. As of 2018, it is ranked eleventh on
the Fortune India 500 list. In April 2018, TCS became the first Indian IT company
to reach $100 billion market capitalization.

History and its operation :


It was founded in the year 1968 under the name of “ TATA Computer Systems”.
TCS and its 67 subsidiaries provides a wide range of information technology-
related products and services including application development, business process
outsourcing, capacity planning, consulting, enterprise software, hardware sizing,
payment processing, software management and technology education services.

Workforce :
TCS is one of the biggest and the largest private sector companies in India, and
TCS has the fourth-largest employer strength among Indian companies (after
Indian Railways, Indian Army and India Post). TCS had a total of 400,875
employees as of September 2018, of which 31% were women. In 2012, the Tata
group companies, including TCS, were the second largest recipient of H-1B
visas.As of June 2017, TCS has over more than 387,000 employees.
It is world's third largest IT employer behind IBM and HP.
TCS has been recognized as a Global Top Employer by the Top Employers
Institute - one of eight organizations worldwide to have achieved this status. In the
assessment of 1,072 companies worldwide in 2016, the Top Employers Institute
had rated TCS as an exceptional performer across nine core Human Resources
(HR) areas: talent strategy, workforce planning, on-boarding, learning and
development, performance management, leadership development, career and
succession management, compensation and benefits and company culture.

Organization Culture:
With a such large workforce for so many years and to remain as one of the
successful organization across the globe is not a easy thing. In order to achieve all
this success ,the culture of the organization plays a vital role. Organizational
culture can be defined as the pattern of shared values, beliefs, and assumptions
considered being the appropriate way to think and act within an organization.
Organizational culture affects the way people and groups interact with each other,
with clients, and with stakeholders. Also, organizational culture may influence how
much employees identify with their organization.

Employee driven Nature :


The Culture of TCS is observed to be highly ethical similar to that of most TATA
Group Companies. Ethical here means that each and every individual in an
organization who is from different backgrounds and varied interests work towards
a common goal and objective. The organization here seemed to be highly
networked with job responsibilities and positions of the employees were clearly
defined.
TCS is mainly an employee driven company. Employees are given all sought of
comforts to help them shape their future and also help the organisation grow. With
good services, timely appraisals, proper work review, other team building activities
makes you come to office with a smile. The management considers their
employees as the organization’s assets and they are given appropriate freedom and
better working environment. This makes the employee to quickly settle down in
the organization and become a member of the TCS family and give their best to the
organization’s success and development. TCS has a highly networked nature of the
environment. An example for that is even the CEO of the company is addressed by
his first name. The culture of TCS is also the one that supports growth and learning
by providing and facilitating platforms for individuals to innovate and experiment
even if that is not a direct requirement of their project. One of the most striking
feature of this company is that employees are referred to as associates and not
’employees’. This reflects the pride the company wants to experience in being

Working environment :

The Company provides the best in the class facilities to


work and learn. TCS has a separate learning and development cell, which

evaluation process twice a year, once for the appraisal and once for the review,
which helps employees assess their working capabilities, There are timely
seminars, webinars, trainings, workshops and other such events to promote
learning. TCS also encourages its employees for continuous learning and
certification drives to promote a more competitive and better working atmosphere.
There are various training programs available for the associates; we have a
learning and Development cell which conducts trainings across various

managerial skills, work life balance etc. Plus apart from this, the HR department of
every project keeps a fun events once every month to promote a healthy working
culture.

Apart from the work activities like involved in a project , TCS provides its

119,000 women in India. The study assessed all applications on several parameters

are working in shifts , TCS provides a cab service. If any lady associate is working
in night shift then she has to be escorted by another gent associate to her staying
place as part of security TCS follows this system.
Leadership and Senior Management :
The hierarchy is very well defined in the organisation. Apart from the technical
associates , there are managerial hierarchies. The technical associates report to the
team lead, he reports to the project lead, the project lead reports to the project
manager and the project manager reports to the group manager. But the best part is,
all the managers for the project/domain are present at the same location and are
accessible to everyone. So the hierarchy is put across well and is also easily
accessible. At TCS there are no seniors, juniors when it comes to work, everyone is
asked to make a contribution to every work, the team work is the driving force
here. A team comprises of a good mix of people. So it’s always challenging and
fun. The boundary between different management levels and associates is low
and the management is easily assessable. The level of respect for every employee
is very high and is maintained with the high to low management and associates.
