(Music). Hello, everyone. Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide. Thanks for joining us today.
My name is Steve. And my name is Hazel. Hey, Steve, how about dancing? Aha, dancing... No,
thank you, Hazel. You can ask somebody else. Steve, you are so funny. I wasn’t asking you to
dance. I want to know what you think about today’s lesson. Oh! You mean our lesson
about ”Break Dancing”. Yeah, break dancing looks like fun. You jump and spin and move all
around. Well, yes, break dancing is amazing. Maybe you should try it, Hazel. Yeah! Maybe I will.
Yeah, right! While Hazel thinks about break dancing, let’s read about it. Please turn to page 34 and
join us for this lesson. Hey, Hazel, be careful. Don’t hurt yourself. (Music).
BREAK DANCING.
An amazing dance style is back. Break dancing is a style of dance like no other. The moves are
jawdropping, and watching dancers performing them will make your head spin. Break dancing
takes skill, strength and rhythm. The style combines acrobatics, Kung Fulike moves and dance to
create a totally unique art form. Although its roots are American, today its popularity has spread
around the globe. Break dancing breaks new ground. Unlike many styles of dance, break dancing
is fairly new.

Hello, friends. Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide. I’m Chip. And I’m Chelsea. And we
hope that you are ready to discuss an exciting topic today. We have a CULTURE article for you.
Today we will be talking about BREAK DANCING. And we see here that break dancing is an
amazing dance style and it’s back. OK, so from that deck, it sounds like, just from the deck, that
this was once a very popular dance style in history, and now it is back in style today. Well, we see
in the first line of our article, we see that break dancing is a style of dance like no other. Now, if
it’s like no other, then that means that it’s very, very unique, very special and not like any other
styles of dance. In fact, it’s so special and so unique that we see that the moves
are ”jawdropping”.
Now, if something is ”jawdropping,” that just means it’s very surprising or perhaps even very
shocking. It’s so surprising that it literally makes your mouth open and therefore, your jaw drop.
Well, I like this word, jawdropping, because sometimes when I’m very amazed or impressed, my
mouth does fall open. My jaw does drop. So these moves are jawdropping. And if you watch the
dancers perform these moves, it might ”make your head spin”. Now this is an interesting phrase to
use here because as we will find out soon, break dancers often spin on their heads as part of one of
their moves. They turn in circles on their heads. But used as an idiom here, if something makes
your head spin, that means it makes you think that something is unbelievable.
You can’t quite understand something because it seems so amazing to you. Right, very amazing,
very surprising. And the idea is kind of funny, to imagin someone’s head spinning around and
around, that would take something very amazing, very surprising to do that. Well, watching these
dancers might make your head spin; it might make your jaw drop. And break dancing takes skill,
strength and rhythm, Chelsea. Now ”rhythm” is when we’re talking about a movement of pattern
that is regular. In order to be a good dancer, you must have rhythm. You must be able to move
your body in a pattern or in a way that is very regular and it fits with the music. So the same is true
for break dancers, they have to have rhythm.
Right. A person or a dancer has to have rhythm. And I suppose the music that they are dancing to
would also have a rhythm. So if the music has rhythm, then it has a regular beat or regular sound.
And if a person has rhythm, if I have rhythm, then that means I’m able to move appropriately with
the rhythm of the song. Now, Chelsea, are you a person who has rhythm? I’d like to think of
myself as a person who has rhythm, but I don’t know. I don’t think I can break dance like these
break dancers do. Well, let’s see what else this break dancing style of dance is all about. It says
that the style combined acrobatics, Kung Fulike moves and dance to create a totally unique art
form. Well, let’s pause for just a moment on that term ”acrobatics”.

popularity has spread around the globe, it wasn’t always as popular.
We know it had to start somewhere, so let’s learn a little bit about its history. We see in the next
section that ”Break dancing breaks new ground”. And if something ”breaks new ground”, that
means that it’s doing something for the very first time that’s different than anything else that’s
been done before. OK. So we might talk about a company that breaks ground with a new product.
If a company comes out with a new product to sell and it’s very hightech and advanced, then they
are breaking new ground. So here we see that break dancing breaks new ground. And then now
we’re going to talk about the history of break dancing, starting out with this sentence: Unlike
many styles of dance, break dancing is fairly new. It is fairly new.
【Grammar on the Go】
Hi, there, friends. I hope you’re all doing well today. My name is Liz and it’s time for Grammar
on the Go. Our article today is about Break Dancing. And according to our writer: Unlike many
styles of dance, break dancing is fairly new. In fact, its history only dates back a few decades.
That’s our Grammar Tip sentence for today. And notice how the sentence begins with the
phrase, ”unlike many styles of dance”.
This is a great phrase to use when you want to bring attention to how your subject is different
from the others in the same category. In the case of today’s sentence, most of the kinds of dance
were started a long time ago, but break dance is different and that it has only been around for a
few decades. Use this phrase, ”unlike many,” to let your audience know immediately that your
subject has some unique characteristics of its own. For example: Unlike most cats, the Turkish
Van cat likes to swim. Or: Unlike most companies, this company allows its workers to bring their
children and pets to work.
So give this phrase a try, see if you can find something interesting about subject and point out how
it’s unique from others in the same category. If you need some more examples, you’ll find them in
today’s Grammar Tip section in your Studio Classroom magazine. That’s it for today. This is Liz
with Grammar on the Go, signing off. And I’ll see you next time. (Music).
(Music). Welcome back from the break, everybody. We’re talking about Break Dancing. Haze, did
you try it? What do you think? Ow! I think I know way they call it ”break” dancing. Oh, no! It
looks like you broke your arm. Well, it feels like I broke every bone in my body. Break dancing is
harder than it looks. I know, Hazel. Break dancing takes skill, strength and rhythm. So now you
tell me! Ouch! No more break dancing for me. I’ve learned my lesson. But we’re still learning our
lesson. So, friends, let’s look on line 2 and continue reading ”Break dancing breaks new ground”.

BREAK DANCING.
In fact, its history only dates back a few decades. It all began in 1969 with music superstar James
Brown. While singing his hit song ”Get on the Good Foot,” Brown did a highenergy dance.
His ”Good Foot” dance caught on and soon this style of dance became known as Bboy. Identified
by its quick footwork, Bboy hit the streets of New York City. There, dancers would gather to
hold ”dance battles”. These battles often helped settle disputes between people without using
violence.
Welcome back. Before the break, we were talking about break dancing, an amazing style of dance
that is popular today. Now, we also talked about how if you watch break dancing, it might make
your jaw drop and your head spin. We also saw a little bit about its history. And, Chelsea, break
dancing does not have a very long history, does it? No. Just before the break, we learned that
unlike many styles of dance, break dancing is actually fairly new. It’s not been around for that
long. In fact, its history only dates back a few decades. And a decade, of course, is a period of time
that is 10 years long. And so this is a very new style of dance.
And it all began in 1969 with music superstar James Brown. All right. So if he’s a superstar, then
he’s a star that is super famous; and his name’s James Brown. Well, while singing his hit song, or
his very popular song, ”Get on the Good Foot,” Brown did a highenergy dance. Now, if you’ve
ever seen James Brown dance, you’d know that he is quite the dancer. He is very famous and he is
a superstar in part because he was such a wellknown dancer. And this dance, ”Get on the Good
Foot,” was no different; it was a very highenergy. And his ”Good Foot” dance actually caught on
very quickly. OK. And if we... if it caught on, we’ve seen that word in Studio Classroom articles
before. If something catches on, then it becomes known. It becomes very popular.
So his ”Good Foot” dance caught on and soon this style of dance became known as Bboy. Now
people aren’t certain what the ”B” in Bboy stands for here. Some people think it stands
for ”Brown,” as James Brown is the one who originated, or started, this dance. Others believe it
might stand for ”break,” as in break dance boy or break boy. We’re not sure. But what you need to
understand is that this style of dance soon became known as Bboy. OK. So it started out with the
name Bboy. And I suppose we will see how this name transitions, or transforms, into what we
know as ”break dancing” today.
It becomes popular in an area. But here, I think these dancers are probably literally hitting the
streets as they are dancing this new style of dance on the streets of New York City. And on the
streets of New York City... the dancers who were doing the Bboy, would gather to hold ”dance

battles”. Now usually, when I think of a battle, I might think of two countries going to war,
sending their soldiers to fight one another, or maybe even two different people or groups of people
in a fight. But here we’re talking about dance battles. So you could kind of picture two groups of
people trying to see who is the better group of dancers.
But in this case, we see that break dancing helped settle disputes without using violence. And,
Chip, if people know anything about New York City, they know that sometimes the streets in New
York City, especially in certain neighborhoods, are not very safe and there is some violence that
occurs from time to time. Absolutely. Often in a big city, not just New York City, but many cities,
a dispute will lead to violence. But here we see Bboy, or this early style of break dancing, settling
disputes between people without using violence. So these disputes were being settled or resolved
peacefully. Now, this is a very interesting style of dance, a very fun dance to watch. We hope
you’ve learned a little bit about its history today. We’ll come back tomorrow and learn more about
break dancing. But before we go today, let’s visit Ken and Ashley in the Chat Room.
【Chat Room】
So what are you doing after work, Ashley? I think I’m going to hit the gym. I really need to work
out. Uh, you’re going to ”hit” the gym? Are you angry at the gym? I don’t get it. No, Ken. To ”hit”
means to go to a certain place. Why don’t we contact Studio Classroom writer Pam and see what
she has to say about this usage? OK. If you hit the gym, you go to it. In the summer, you can hit
the beach, which simply means go to the beach. But keep in mind that this is an informal usage.
You can use it with your friends. But don’t say ”Let’s hit the beach!” to an elderly person or
someone important. Oh, that’s good to know.
But Ashley, I was reading Studio Classroom and it says a style of dance called Bboy ”hit” the
streets of New York City. How can a style of dance go anywhere? Now that has a different
meaning. There, ”hit” means to arrive at a place. A new product can hit the market, which simply
means to arrive at the market. The sentence in Studio Classroom says the dance style Bboy
arrived or began to appear on the streets of New York. I see. So, does ”hit” have any other
informal usages? Well, if you’re lucky, Ken, you might hit the jackpot in the lottery. Hit the
jackpot? That’s right. It means to win the top prize.
Oh! Then I hope I hit the jackpot. Also, when a certain product hits the market, it may become a
hit. A hit? So you’re using hit as a noun? Yes. A hit refers to something successful or popular. A
movie can be a hit. A song can also be a hit if lots of people listen to it. Well, I think I should hit
the books soon. And I’m going to get ready to hit the gym. (Chinese).
