The city is built of many fragmented experiences.

Buildings are the formative element of the city, and in their interior space the human dimension, physical and
spiritual, is to be re-established; they are a kind of fortress of reality in an ever-changing environment of new
needs and circumstances1.

The visual image of the city is built by its iconic buildings, the city line. But the association a person makes
with the city is the sum total of her/his experiences; the experiences, created by the spaces that are held
within and between the buildings. As population densities increases and the cities grow inward, architects &
city planners need to be able to read the city from inside out, to be able to covert innovate, morph, modulate,
existing spaces to cohesive relevant places The neighbourhood, its shops and the residence are essentially
the domain of the homemakers, children & elderly. For majority of the urban individuals, life is lived in
offices, institutions, malls, theatres and even in transit.

AIM

Through the medium of films, books and artwork the student will be exposed to the interiority of the
metropolis. By analysing the clips, excerpts from the books and specific imagery, objective inferences will be
drawn up for both the definitive, and the transitory urban spaces. Through the study they will identify
elements, classify spaces and assign values that add up to the experience of the city.
In an inverse process of the study done in the first stage a mixed media project will be done in groups, to
create a city that reads pre decided attributes. Values & functions would be assigned first and then the
outcome created in different mediums, a short film, short story and/or artwork.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

1. The students should be able to comprehend the different narratives that exist in an urban space.
2. The student should be able to decipher the layers of the city’s interior spaces.
3. The student should be able to apply subject-specific theoretical approaches to comparable context.
4. Critically assess textual and visual materials and synthesis the same.
