Overview of BMC Performance Manager

Express for Servers
BMC Performance Manager Express for Servers provides the ability to monitor and
manage your Microsoft Windows, UNIX®, and Linux® environments, including log
files. The product monitors IT infrastructure elements using remote methods such as
Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI), System Monitor (known as
Performance Monitor or Perfmon in earlier versions of Windows), and secure shell
(SSH). These methods allow agentless monitoring.

This version of BMC Performance Manager Express for Servers includes the
following components:

Component Version
BMC Performance Manager Express for Servers - Microsoft 2.7.50
Windows
BMC Performance Manager Express for Servers - UNIX/Linux 2.7.50
BMC Performance Manager Express for Servers - Log 2.7.50

Open issue in BMC Performance Manager Express for Servers

- UNIX/Linux
The following issue remains open in the version 2.7.50 of BMC Performance Manager
Express for Servers - UNIX/Linux:

Table 5 Open issue and workaround

Tracking ID Description
QM001552902 On Solaris elements, you are not able to monitor long process
names.

Monitoring Large Zone Environments

If you are monitoring an environment that has more than 5 zones, each having 20
projects and each of them is resource-capped with the default collection and
reporting interval (that is, 5 minutes), then there might be gaps in reporting the data
points. Alarms and warnings may be delayed.

As a workaround for this issue, increase the default collection and reporting interval.
Remember that monitoring performance is directly proportional to the number of
zones to be monitored, the number of active projects in each zone, and capping
assigned to each project.

BMC Performance Manager Express for Servers - Log Management

Using SNMP application classes not supported

The “Using SNMP” application classes of version 2.5 and earlier are no longer
supported. During an upgrade to 2.7.50 from 2.5.00, all instances of the “Using
SNMP” application classes are removed from the Portal and RSM along with any
associated historical data.

NOTE
If you prefer to monitor using SNMP, use the Performance Manager Editor (PME) to create
a custom Performance Manager that uses SNMP for data collection. For more information,
see the BMC Performance Manager Portal Monitoring and Management Guide and the BMC
Performance Manager Portal online Help.

Internationalization or localization information

Table 7 Open issues and workarounds

Tracking ID Issue
QM001557681 On Windows, a log file with a percent character (%) in the password is
not monitored.
QM001529750 If you are monitoring log files that grow by more than the default read
limit of 1,000 lines (UNIX) or 98,304 bytes (Windows) during one
collection cycle, two issues can occur:

■ If your log files are growing faster than the default read limit
during a collection cycle, alarms and warning for matched search
strings might be delayed.

■ If your log files are growing faster than the default read limit
during a collection cycle and you set Only Monitor Latest File to
true, some log file lines might be skipped when transitions from
the current log file to the new log file are monitored.

Workaround: Increase the read limit on the RSM computer by

following the instructions in “Adjusting the read limit” in the online
Help. Alternatively, use an agent-based product.

Setting thresholds for discovered log file instances

During initial configuration, you cannot configure parameter thresholds for
discovered log file instances. Instead, you can configure the parameter thresholds
after initial configuration using the following instructions as follows:

1. In the navigation pane on the left side of the Portal page, click the configured Log
application under Log Management.

2. Click the Configure tab.

3. Click the Edit button and scroll down to the parameter thresholds that you want to
change.

This changes the threshold for all newly discovered log files. To change thresholds for
a specific discovered log, click on the discovered log to change its thresholds.

Prerequisites for installation

Prerequisites for installation

This section describes software, hardware, or other requirements for BMC
Performance Manager Express for Servers that are not discussed in the installation
guide. For more information about all requirements, see the installation guide.

BMC product requirements

BMC Performance Manager Express for Servers requires the following components:

■ BMC Performance Manager Portal version 2.6 or later

■ Remote Service Monitor (RSM) version 2.6 or later

newly added application classes (for example, VM CPU, VM Memory, and so on)
and parameters (for example, Swap Space Utilization, Physical Memory
Configured, and so on). This may also create problems for future solution
upgrades on the same BMC Performance Manager Portal version. The 2.6.00.094
patch is available at the following location:
ftp://ftp.bmc.com/pub/BPMPortal/2.6/2.6.00.094.zip

■ If you have not applied the patch version 2.6.00.060 of BMC Performance Manager
Portal, you need to copy the patsdk-wmi-solution-2.6.00.060.par and patsdk-
