A museum of toys,
games and learning.
THE HISTORY OF A MUSEUM

The history of the first ever children’s

museum in Indonesia, is short because
it was only
in 2008 February that the museum
doors opened
at
Yogya’s Cultural Center.
The museum was founded by the long time resident of
Yogyakarta; Rudi Corens, a Belgian artist. The museum
started with Pak Rudi’s own collection of 4000 pieces.
Today, the museum’s collection counts more than 16.000
items. Naturally not all on display. An achievement that
has been realized thanks to support of Indonesian and
foreign museum - friends.

“The under the stairs”

museum changes his
display, once a year.
The museum focuses
on the children’s world
of yesterday, without
forgetting the one of
today.
Kolong Tangga is an educational,
living museum, where objects are
handled with understanding and
curiosity. The museum items are
no sacred cows, kids can handle
museum objects under museum
guidance.
“The Museum Kolong Tangga puts a wide
variety of toys, games, documents, photos,
etc on display, everything that is related
to children’s daily life. Our aim is to offer
an alternative approach to historical or
contemporary form of playing, to old and
new learning realities, to the discovery of
the toys and games of children not only of
Indonesia, but from countries around the
world as well.
“It’s through teaching the traditional games that children will
be directly stimulated to demonstrate their creativity and
leadership-skill. It is by playing games together with other
kids, that patience, understanding and especially tolerance will
be discovered.

Kolong Tangga has a rich collection of Indonesian

on display in the museum. Children get the chance
to make traditional toys by themselves, and it is
