CHAPTER I

PRELIMINARY

A. Background Of Paper

Indonesia is a country that has a diverse history and culture. One form of
historical heritage that still exists today and some that still function well is the Palace.
There are a lot of former royal palaces that are historical relics in Indonesia. Each palace
has its own characteristics both from the history, form of buildings, culture and different
customs / ceremonies which are interesting to see, visit and study. Medan City is the
provincial capital of North Sumatra, Indonesia. This city is the largest city on the island
of Sumatra. In addition, the city of Medan has also become one of the cities that have a
variety of attractions. Both in terms of natural tourism, arts and culture, and culinary.
Seeing the tourism potential that is owned by the city of Medan, tourism managers
should be able to take advantage of this potential. In the course of its history, the city
of Medan bequeathed a number of buildings of historical value, as one proof of the
existence and glory of the city in the past. Historic buildings are archives of old
buildings that have high aesthetic value. One of the historic buildings that has been
protected by the state is Maimun Palace. Maimoon Palace or commonly called Maimun
Palace is one of the cultural heritage of our living ancestors (Life Monument) located
in Aur village, Medan Baru sub-district, Medan Municipality, approximately 3 km from
Polonia Airport and 28 km from Belawan port. The palace building was designed by an
Italian architect and was built by Sultan Deli, Makmun Al Rasyid Perkasa Alamsyah
who was a descendant of the 9th king of the Deli Sultanate. This palace was built 2 on
August 26, 1888. Maimun Palace has an area of 2,772 m2 and has 30 more rooms.
Maimun Palace is a tourist destination not only because of its old age, but its unique
interior design. This palacebuilding combines elements of Malay cultural heritage, with
Islamic, Spanish, Indian and Italian styles. In addition Maimun Palace has high artistic
and cultural values, such as the legend of Meriam Puntung, a legend about the
incarnation of the sister of the Green Princess who came from the Kingdom of Haru
who refused to be invited to cause war. The Sultan Deli traditional music program is an
instrumental music specially played for the royal family, there is a place for selling
souvenirs typical of Maimun Palace and there is an area for photo shoots with the
typical Sultan's attire. In addition Maimun Palace is also one of 7 historic buildings in
Indonesia and has been named the most beautiful building in the city of Medan
(Kompas 2 August 2012 and the book "A Brief History of the Maimun Palace").
Maimun Palace has a lot of potential that can be optimized as an art and cultural tourism
as well as an attraction for local and foreign tourists to visit this Maimun Palace. At
present the image of Maimun Palace is still not good, even though this Palace is one of
the historical heritages that should be maintained and has also become a major tourist
destination in the city of Medan. But it seems that public awareness is still lacking to
help and maintain and preserve these attractions, also the lack of clear information and
the lack of events / events that support

1
attractions. In addition, the parties from the Maimun Palace and the Medan city
government themselves are also lacking promotion and are appropriate to attract the
attention of local and foreign tourists so that many tourists do not know and are less
interested in these tourist attractions. If this tourist attraction can be optimally
optimized, the Maimun Palace will automatically become an attractive tourist attraction
to visit.

than three days using a private vehicle, public, or certain bureau with the aim to see various
places or cities both domestically and abroad

B. Definition Of Tourism Object And Attraction

According to S. Nyoman Pendit (2002) a tourist attraction or tourist attraction is a place

B. Buntung Cannon
The historic building of this cultural heritage is also one of the means of the object.
The story of the buntung cannon is related to Putri Hijau. It is said, in the Kingdom of the
Eastern Kingdom, there lived a beautiful princess, named the Princess of the Green. He is
called so, because his body emits green. He has two brothers, namely Mambang Yasid and
Mambang Khayali. One time, the King of Aceh came to marry Putri Hijau, however, the
proposal was rejected by his two brothers. The king of Aceh became angry, then attacked
the Kingdom of the Greater East. The king of Aceh defeated Mambang Yasid. When the
Aceh army was about to enter the palace to kidnap Putri Hijau, suddenly a miracle
occurred, Mambang Khayali suddenly turned into a cannon and fired indiscriminately.
Because of the continuous firing of bullets at the Aceh army, the cannon was split in two.
The front is found in the Surbakti area, in the Karo highlands, near Kabanjahe. While the
rear was thrown into Labuhan Deli, then moved to the courtyard of Maimun Palace. Every
day, the Palace is open to the public, except when there are special ceremonies.

C. The Attraction Of Maimun Palace As a Tourism Object

CHAPTER IV
CLOSING

A. Conclusion
Maimun Palace is a historic building in the city of Medan. This building is a relic
of the IX Deli Sultan Malay Kingdom which has many features and history, one of which
is the Buntung Cannon and a collection of historical objects. Maimun Palace is very good
as a cultural tourist attraction that brings foreign exchange to the Indonesian State.

B. Suggestion
Maimun Palace is a historical building that has many features. But in my opinion
this Maimun Palace tourist attraction will be more developed and known to many people
if we hold an introduction to the wider community in detail about the advantages
possessed by the Maimun Palace compared to other attractions. Besides that, cleanliness
around Maimun Palace is more guarded so as not to cause garbage around the Palace.
Don't let this Maimun Palace lose its charm. It is our duty to maintain the cleanliness of
the historic building. So that the beauty of Maimun Palace is maintained.
