What is meant by a Green Building?
Green building (also known as green construction or

sustainable building) refers to both a structure and the using of
processes that are environmentally responsible and
resource-efficient throughout a building’s life-cycle: from siting
to design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation,
and demolition.
In other words, green building design involves finding the

balance between homebuilding and the sustainable
environment.

In 2004, India certified the first LEED Platinum building in

the world- the 20,000 square foot CII-Sohrabji Godrej
Green Business Centre in Hyderabad, the head quarters
of the Indian Green Building Council.
In 2007, the IGBC announced its own national rating

system, similar to LEED under license from USGBC.
The Indian system was developed in close cooperation

with the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII).

Helps people to assess the performance of their buildings

against certain nationally accepted bench marks.
Evaluates the environmental performance of a building

Evolution of GRIHA
With an overall objective to reduce resource consumption,

reduction in GHG emissions and to enhance the usage of
renewable energy by the building sector the The Energy
and Resources Institute (TERI) played crucial role in
formulating GRIHA.
GRIHA was adopted as the national rating system for

green buildings by the GoI in 2007.
Subsequently adopted by the Ministry of New and

Renewable Energy.

A three tier rating system.
1 Online submission of documents as per the prescribed

criteria.
2 It is followed by on site visit and evaluation of the building
by a team of experts and professionals from GRIHA.
3 Consists of 34 criteria categorized in four different
sections such as site selection and planning,
conservation and efficient utilization of resources,
building operation and maintenance and innovation.

What is LEED?
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED, is a

third-party green building certification program and the
nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction,
and operation of high-performance green buildings and
neighborhoods.
The rating systems give building owners and operators the
tools they need to have an immediate and measurable
effect on their buildings’ performance.

Achieving LEED certification requires satisfying all

prerequisites and earning a minimum number of credits.Each
LEED rating system corresponds to a LEED reference guide
that explains credit criteria, describes the benefits of complying
with the credit, and suggests approaches to achieving credit
compliance. The levels of certification generally follow these
thresholds:
