Pattern Information and Tips

Skill Level
This pattern is rated easy/ suitable to beginner skill level. It is constructed with a limited number of
simple stitch types.

Recommended Yarn and Hook

Any 4ply yarn, either plain or colour graduated, with meterage between 600m to 1000m (depending
on shawl size preference) is recommended for this project. A 3 – 3.5 mm hook is recommended. If
your tension is particularly loose or tight, you may need to use a smaller or bigger hook than
recommended.

Example Shawl
Red/pink: Lincraft Illusions Cake, 4ply and approximately 600m. 3.25 mm hook.

Sizing
The shawl is worked from bottom to top (triangle point to triangle base). Increase the width with
each row constructed, until shawl is desired width and length.

Example Shawl (600m of yarn)

Length:
Total length (tip to base): 110cm, consisting of 22 rows of elongated triangle repeats, with each
row being ~5cm tall.

Width:
Total width (base): 165cm, consisting of 22 elongated triangle repeats, with each triangle repeat
~7.5cm wide at its maximum width.

Pattern synopsis
The shawl is worked from bottom to top (starting with the tip of the shawl). Triangle motifs are both
solid (blue outline in image below) and lace (white outline in image below) – alternating. These
motifs are constructed in four row repeats for elongated triangles (the standard pattern) and three
row repeats for regular triangles (the pattern variation).

The shawl grows a triangle width with each three (regular triangle) or four (elongated triangle) row
repeat. There is always one more solid triangle made than lace triangles for each repeat. For the
standard pattern, in the first repeat one solid triangle is made, forming the tip of the shawl. In the
second repeat two solid triangles are made and one lace triangle is made. In the third repeat three
solid lace triangles are made and two lace triangles are made… and such forth.

If using a graduated yarn cake with the standard pattern, the end used first will have a greater length
in the shawl than any subsequent colour, so think carefully about preferred colour placement. For
some longer cakes (1000+m) it may be worthwhile first winding off some of the first colour and
setting it aside, so that only some of the length of the colour is used in the body of the shawl. The set
aside yarn can (optionally) be used to make a floral brooch to compliment the shawl.

A border is optional. The pattern includes a border as you go variation (suited to graduated colour
change yarn). If using a single, solid colour, any preferred style of border can be added after the
shawl construction is completed.

The pattern is worked alternating right and wrong side with each row. Stitches are worked in both
loops of previous round.

9
Border As You Go (BAYG) variation:
If using a solid, single colour a border can be added after the shawl is completed. However, if using a
graduated colour change yarn, it is recommended that the border be formed as the shawl is worked
from bottom to top.

This is just one simple example of a Border As You Go. A more ornate border could be worked.

The shawl stitches are constructed exactly the same, except a double v-stitch (2 DC, 1 Ch, 2 DC) is
worked in the first and last stitch of every single row:
 Foundation:
Magic circle (or 3-4 chain joined with SlSt to form a circle).
 Row 1:
5 DC into magic circle and pull taught. Turn.
 Row 2:
Into the first stitch work the following stitches: 4 Ch (counts as the first DC and 1 Ch space), 1 DC,
1 Ch.
(Now work triangle shawl pattern as per regular or elongated pattern instructions. I.e. Work 2
DC into next stitch, then 1 DC into next stitch, and then 2 DC into next stitch.)
1 Ch, then into the last stitch work the following stitches: 1 DC, 1 Ch, 1 DC. Turn.
 Row 3:
SlSt into first 1 Ch space, then in this space work the following stitches: 3 Ch (counts as the first
DC), DC, 1 Ch, 2 DC, 1 Ch. Skip the next stitch.
(Now work triangle shawl pattern as per regular or elongated pattern instructions. I.e. Work 2
DC into next stitch, then 1 DC into each of the next three stitches, and then 2 DC into next
stitch.)
1 Ch, skip next stitch and then into the next 1 ch space work the following stitches: 2 DC, 1 Ch, 2
DC. Turn.
 Subsequent rows (repeat):
Slst across to first 1 Ch space and construct a double v-stitch (i.e. 3 Ch, 1 DC, 1 Ch, 2 DC).
1 Ch and skip next two stitches.
Now follow regular or elongated pattern instructions for the applicable row.
1 Ch, skip next two stitches and in next 1 Ch space construct a double v-stitch (2 DC, 1 Ch, 2 DC).
Turn.

Note:

o When commencing a new triangle repeat (row 4 for regular triangle pattern and row 5
for elongated triangle pattern), work the 3 DC into the 1 Ch space instead of the last
stitch of the base of the previous row triangle.

o The BAYG shawl should resemble the following image (note this is a regular triangle
shawl example):

10
o If preferred, a single v-stitch could be worked instead of the double v-stitch (i.e. 1 DC, 1
Ch, 1 DC).
