Incipient Gully Mitigation in Abia State

(Abia – Newmap)

Objective:

The Objective of this programme is as follow:

1. Mitigate gullies at early formative stage rather than wait for it to develop into deep
gullies.
2. Reduce the amount of money use to mitigate an erosion site at that early
formative stage when compare to deep erosion gullies.
3. Reduce the time between discovery of an erosion site and the intervention period.

Strategy:

In a bid to address environmental degradation cause by erosion at early formative stage

in Abia State, Abia State Newmap in collaboration with its Engineering Design and Supervision Office
have visited some erosion sites within the cluster area developed in the state.

After the visit a set down criteria were developed for the selection of incipient gully sites,
twenty-two sites were visited, but only fourteen passed the selection criteria. The criteria used were;
type of gully, size of erosion, whether the gully is incipient or not, can it be treated easily, is the gully
hindering access and is it threat to roads, assets and public utilities. Nigeria Erosion and Watershed
Management Project (Newmap), was established in Abia State since 2015 and some other states in
Nigeria, they have been taken care of deep gullies but due to large scale destruction and economic
wastages cause by these gully sites, necessitated a change in strategy of addressing this
environmental degradation.

This programme is coming at a time when many are crying at long duration of discovery
and intervention for the erosion sites and the amount of money being spent to mitigate these sites.

This programme seeks to help provide prompt mitigation to these sites at their formative
stage by shortening the designing and procurement period, thereby reducing the economic wastages
being incurred as a result of this environmental degradation.

Furthermore, it will also ensure sustainability of livelihood and peace, for the fact that
majority of the people living in those areas are predominately famers and traders, with their farm
lands and markets being threatened by these erosion sites, if this programme is not adopted urgently.

Social menace such as armed robbery and other vices are capable of increasing in the state.

Activities:

Consequent upon adopting this programme, the follow activities will be involved in carry
out the programme.

 Filling, compacting and grading

 Construction of concrete drain
 Construction of check dams
 Construction of culverts
 Construction of chute and stilling basin
 Construction of riprap apron
 Construction of swales
 Bio remediation works

Project outputs/Expected Results:

1. It provides assurance to the people that they assets will not be destroyed by
erosion.
2. It helps to avoid colossal wastage of resources since it will be addressed at
formative stage.
3. It ensures watershed management with prompt action.
4. It will help to avoid disruption of economic activities since public utilities such
as electric poles, roads, water pipelines etc will not be destroyed
5. It will ensure sustainability of livelihood and peace since farm lands and
markets being threatened by erosion will be taken care of.
6. It will help to ensure inter and intra communal relationship since roads linking
communities will be promptly addresses when threatened by erosion.
7. It will help to avoid disaster such as fire, especially in areas where oil and gas
pipeline are laid.
