ASSIGNMENT 1/MENG 381

ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS:

Q-1 Instruments are normally calibrated and their characteristics defined for particular standard
ambient conditions. What procedures are normally taken to avoid measurement errors when using
instruments that are subjected to changing environment conditions.

Q-2 A rectangular-sided block has edges of length a, b and c, and its mass is m. If the values and possible
errors in quantities a, b,c and m are as shown below. Calculate the value of density and the possible
error in this value.

a= 100 mm± 1%, b= 200 mm±1%, c= 300mm± 1%, m= 20 kg ±0.5%

Q-3 A tube of Circular section has a nominal length of 52 cm±0.5 cm, an outside diameter of 20 cm
±0.04 cm, and an inside diameter of 15 cm±0.08 cm. Determine the uncertainty in the calculated
volume.

Q-4 It is desired to compare the design of two bolts based on their tensile strength capabilities. The
following lists the results of the sample testing.

GROUP FAILURE LOAD STD.DEVIATION NUMBER OF TESTS

A 30 KN 2 KN 21
B 34 KN 6 KN 9

Is there a difference between the two samples at the 95% confidence level?

Q-5 A total of 120 hardness measurements are performed on a large slab of steel. If, using the Rockwell
C scale, the mean of the measurements is 39 and the standard deviations 4.0, how many of the
measurements can be expected to fall between the hardness readings of 35 and 45?

Q-6 Results from a chemical analysis for the carbon content of two materials are as follows:

CARBON CONTENT %
MATERIAL A 93.52 92.81 94.32 93.77 93.57 93.12
MATERIAL B 92.38 93.21 92.55 92.05 92.54

Determine if there is any significant difference in carbon content at the 99% confidence level.

Q-7 The manufacturer of inexpensive outdoor thermometers checks a sample of ten against a 68 F
standard. The following results were obtained:

68.5 67.5 67 69 68 67 67.5 69 69 68

Using student’s T –test, calculate the range within the population mean may be expected to lie with a
confidence level of 95%.
Q-8 Spacer blocks are manufactured in quantity to a nominal dimension of 125 mm. A sample of 12
blocks was selected and the following measurements were made.

1.28 1.32 1.29 1.23

1.26 1.26 1.20 1.29
1.24 1.23 1.26 1.22

Using Student’s t-test, determine the upper and lower tolerance values within which the population
mean may be expected to fall with a significant level of 10%.

Q-9 In 200 tosses of a coin,116 heads and 84 tails were observed. Determine if the coin is fair using a
confidence level of 95% or a significant level of 5%.
