It's Official: We'll Be the De Anza

Mountain Lions!
The new De Anza mascot was chosen by the college mascot working group, which includes
DASB student representatives, student-athletes and coaches.

The mountain lion was the top choice overall and also drew the most first- and second-
choice picks in a ranked-choice survey last month. A record number of students, faculty
members, classified professional staff members and Athletics alumni participated by naming
their preferences among several finalists – including bears, wildcats and diamondbacks.

Members of the working group said they like the mountain lion in
part because it is native to the region. The name may be
shortened to "lions" in some circumstances.

The selection has the added benefit of being unique: No other

California college or university has adopted the mountain lion as
a mascot.

The decision was based on extensive input and campuswide

participation, including

Coordination with DASB representatives, student-athletes

and coaches
Consultation with Academic Senate and Classified Senate

What's Next?
The process moves into a design phase for winter quarter, as the college developes an official
image for the new mascot, with continued input from DASB student representatives, student-
athletes and coaches.

Phased implementation will begin in spring 2020, as the new mascot is incorporated into
athletics team uniforms, college advertising and other media.

Don, an outdated symbol that many students had never even seen. The new mascot was
