SALIENT SKILLS IN LEADERSHIP

BAVANI MOORTHY

Good evening friends – Hope you are doing well!

Welcome to this public speaking session . As you all know that the reason all of us go
these leadership classes is to help you enhance your skills set and develop leadership qualities
which will help you in the long run. But you must be pondering over the fact that why you need to
develop leadership qualities. Well, its answer is very simple! You do not work in isolation, do you?
If not, then you would gradually go up in the ladder an organization. So as you will go higher, you
will be responsible not only for your work, but also for the people working under you. Being
responsible for your work is one thing, but being responsible for the work of a group of people is
something else and trust me it’s not an easy job

Leadership is a process of individual influence on a group of individuals aimed at the

achievement of individual and or common goals of the group or the organization”A great leader
is someone who can inspire and lead others. You doesn’t have to necessarily force anyone, but
your influence on people should be so profound that they start following him/her willingly. For this
to happen, you should have great oratory skills and should be able to move people through the
power of your words. You doesn’t have to rule over anyone but Your personality should be so
strong that people easily get swayed by yourr aura. It is true that these qualities are god gifted to
a certain extent in a select few people, but after a point one has to constantly work over it.One of
the problems is that people are generally unaware of their leadership potential, not least because
of the general human tendency we have to assume we are better than we actually are, especially
when we aren’t competent.

What are some of the critical values that can transform an ordinary person into a charismatic and
larger-than-life leader? Let’s know, those leadership skills and stand out from rest of the crowd
and make a mark in this world:

Firstly, a good leader is never afraid to take responsibility. Inculcating this value will not
only show that you are accountable and transparent but also will inspire others to take
responsibility for their share of actions. While parents have a responsibility to nurture their child
and educate them, a politician should give good governance to people of his/her country. While
a teacher has a responsibility to inspire learning, a CEO has the responsibility to lead and execute
a company’s strategies, and achieve the long-term goals.
In addition, Innovation is the ‘life and blood’ of any industry. In fact, the only aspect that
can decide the fate whether a company will survive or die is its ability to innovate great products.
And innovation happens with unique ideas. Simon Sinek famously said, ” What good is an idea if
it remains an idea? Try. Experiment. Iterate. Fail. Try again. Change the world”. A leader brings
in a lot of innovative ideas and inspires his subordinates as well to ideate on the original scale to
remain above the competition. Innovation as a strategy is always on top of a leader’s mind.
Creativity and Innovation are the two sides of the same coin. And they cannot be separated from
other.

Furthermore,Cooperation. It’s a great leadership quality to make everyone work in

harmony under one roof. If you are able to pull people together for a cause or project, then
success is bound to touch your feet. This quality is of paramount importance in a leader because
being a leader itself entails making people to follow you readily and for a substantial cause. You
should have penetrating eyes to actually understand who all are the people worth taking along
and can effectively contribute towards the cause or smooth functioning of your organization.

Lastly, you must be able to think or plan the future with imagination or wisdom. Vision is
the guide that directs all successful leaders. You should be able to come out with a vision and
plan on a roadmap to success in any organization you want to lead. “I have a dream” made the
introductory part of the speech delivered by Martin Luther King Jnr, during his emancipation
proclamation in August 1963. He had a vision that his people would be emancipated from racism
which was a dream come true. The awesome leadership of renowned organisations all started
with visions that made them the most talked about brands.

Always remember, it is not the great things a man did that made him great, but the little
things he did in great ways.As Nelson Mandela, a man who showed selfless leadership once said,
“It is better to lead from behind and put others in front, especially when you celebrate victory when
nice things occur. You take the front line when there is a danger. Then people will appreciate your
leadership.”Thats all from me.A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the
way

Thank You!
