New features in Forming
16.0

Modernization of Simufact Forming GUI

Copyright © simufact engineering gmbh

Modernization of the Forming GUI

◆ Our idea…

▪ Gradual modernization of the

Forming GUI.

▪ Short mouse paths, options

where they are needed.

▪ GUI reacts to different user

scenarios (model or result
view).

▪ Most functions/options can be

used from the context menu.

Copyright © simufact engineering gmbh

Modernization of the Forming GUI

◆ Added visibility control and rendering settings control to view context menu, allowing separate
settings for every object.
◆ Reordered several context menu entries to be more user-friendly.
◆ Added "show only workpiece" to model and result view context menu (right mouse click on the
background).

Copyright © simufact engineering gmbh

Modernization of the Forming GUI
◆ Added a new widget directly on the main display allowing a better control of angular views, model
orientation and synchronization (synchronization button is visible only if two windows are open).

▪ Easier and faster view control using the new camera toolbar containing all the main view functions.

▪ Camera toolbar also allows an easy and fast synchronization of multiple views.

Copyright © simufact engineering gmbh

Modernization of the Forming GUI

◆ New dialog box style implemented.

◆ Decreased the number of buttons per dialog box.
▪ Removed "Apply" and "Reset" buttons from all dialog
boxes.
▪ Special dialog boxes now have a "Restore defaults"
button which resets the values to default values, e.g.
the meshing dialog.
▪ Buttons with special functions like "Create mesh" were
added to dialogs where needed.
▪ Avoids the usage of the "Apply" button for functions
like mesh generation.

New features in Forming
16.0

Boundary conditions

Copyright © simufact engineering gmbh

Boundary conditions
Complete rework of boundary condition options

◆ Boundary condition implementation of Forming 15.0

was completely removed and reworked for Forming
16.0.

◆ Functionalities in Forming 15.0 had been very limited:

▪ could only be applied to deformable dies,

▪ limited options (only surfaces/facets),

▪ meshing was only possible „directly on STL“.

Copyright © simufact engineering gmbh

Boundary conditions

◆ Mesh-related implementation started.

◆ Areas of application in Forming 16.0:

▪ fix displacements,

▪ apply force,

▪ hold nodes (→ reinforcement

calculation),

▪ overlap.

Copyright © simufact engineering gmbh

Boundary conditions

◆ Assignment of the defined boundary conditions

to workpieces or deformable dies:

◆ Selection of the nodes directly on the finite

element mesh:

Copyright © simufact engineering gmbh

Boundary conditions
◆ Selection methods are:

▪ single node,

▪ shortest path (shortest path between two

nodes is automatically selected, e.g. fast
node selection),

▪ plane (nodes on a plane can be selected

quickly and easily with a single mouse click).

◆ Nodes can be added or removed:

Copyright © simufact engineering gmbh

Boundary conditions
◆ Selection method „plane" has two
tolerance options:

▪ absolute difference (quick selection of

the nodes on the planar surface),

▪ relative difference (easy and quick

selection of nodes from curved
surfaces, e.g. inner diameter of a die).

Copyright © simufact engineering gmbh

Boundary conditions

Absolute difference – Selection of nodes from Relative difference – Selection of nodes from

a planar surface. a curved surface.

Copyright © simufact engineering gmbh

Boundary conditions
◆ Visualization of boundary conditions in the model view

◆ Fix displacement → Workpiece and deformable dies

can be fixed in space in different directions (x, y, z).

◆ Hold nodes → This option indicates that the incremental

displacement of the indicated nodes is to be neglected.
This allows you to apply a load or displacement on the
structure to generate a stress in the body without the
displacements changing (important for reinforcement
simulations).
Visualization in the model view

◆ Apply force → Loads can be applied in an increment.

Copyright © simufact engineering gmbh

Boundary conditions
Restrictions when using boundary conditions in Forming 16.0:

▪ Application possible only for analysis without remeshing during the simulation.

▪ Areas of application: dieload analysis, heat treatment, sheet metal forming

▪ Displacements and loads are applied in one increment (no gradual loading / no tables) -
limited value of the offsets / loads.

▪ Boundary conditions are active at every load case/substage.

▪ Restart option is restricted.

▪ No visualization of the boundary conditions in the result window.

needed for one simulation are available on one
license server, the number of available licenses is
marked with a [*]. This indicates the maximum
number of licenses usable for the next simulation.
If multiple license servers are used, additional
simulations that use this license feature may
nevertheless be possible. In this case, total -
available* may not match the number of licenses
in use.

New features in Forming
16.0

Meshing improvements
▪ Improvements in tetmeshing
▪ Improvements in sheetmeshing
▪ Improvements in ringmeshing
▪ Possibility to define more than 10 refinement boxes

Copyright © simufact engineering gmbh

Meshing improvements
Tetmeshing
◆ Significant improvements in tetmeshing in terms of robustness and reliability:

▪ Improvements in edge detection (“soft edges” introduced) – min. element edge length value is
satisfied better now.

▪ Improved tool edge interaction

▪ Improved projection → Prevention of penetrations

▪ Improved volume control (especially with symmetrical contact)

▪ Implementation of fallback strategies to avoid meshing errors

▪ Avoidance of self-penetrating surfaces

▪ Volume control option added to the meshing criterion

Copyright © simufact engineering gmbh

Meshing improvements
Tetmeshing option: Imprint tool edges

◆ If activated, sharp features from tools are imprinted on the

workpiece during meshing. This is recommended if the tools have
sharp edges in contact with the workpiece.

◆ This option is deactivated by default but should be activated only if

the tool has sharp edges → exceptional case.

Meshing improvements
Tetmeshing – Default values
◆ Default step control: Displacement change (automatic)

◆ Default solver for element type 157 (used in forming simulations):

Pardiso Direct Sparse

◆ Min. element edge length = 0.0 corresponds to 1/5 of the basic

element edge length
▪ In order to reduce the number of elements and thus to save computing
time, minimum element edge length can be reduced to 1/3 of the base
element edge length.

◆ New convergence criteria for substage "Forming" - displacement

value set to 0.01 (can be changed in the process .ini files, if
required)

Copyright © simufact engineering gmbh

Meshing improvements
Tetmeshing – Speedup of simulation

◆ Step control “fixed time steps" can also be used, this will use fewer calculation steps (increments)
for the simulation, thus the simulation will be partially accelerated.

◆ In the remeshing criteria, the option “strain change" can be increased to 0.6 in order to reduce
remeshings during the simulation.

◆ Min. element edge length = 0.0 corresponds to 1/5 of the basic element edge length

▪ In order to reduce the number of elements and thus to save computing time, the minimum
element edge length can be reduced to 1/3 of the base element edge length.

Copyright © simufact engineering gmbh

Meshing improvements
Tetmeshing – Default values
◆ Important note:
▪ When the project is rebuilt, the default values become active immediately.
▪ For old projects (for example V14/V15 projects), the old input values are used first. It is
recommended to update the project in the process type dialog. After that, the new default values
will be used.

Copyright © simufact engineering gmbh

Meshing improvements
Sheetmeshing
◆ Cylindrical refinement boxes for planar meshing (initial meshing only).

Copyright © simufact engineering gmbh

Meshing improvements
Ringmeshing
◆ Ringmesher supports ring segments with arbitrary angles.

◆ Note: Not all types of ring segments support an automatic

calculation of the ring center with changing diameter, so the
type of segment needs to be defined. For segments of
360°, 180° and 90°, the ring center can be calculated
automatically. For ring segments with an arbitrary angle
only the origin and a user-defined center are available.

◆ Possibility to define several critical angles.

◆ Recommended rotational axis of the ring is in the Z-

direction.

Joining
▪ 2/3 SPR joints
▪ Geometry export from Forming to Joining
▪ Optimized measuring method for RSW processes

Copyright © simufact engineering gmbh

Joining (2/3 SPR joints)
◆ Added automatic measurement of 2/3 SPR joints
▪ When creating a 2/3 SPR joint, the rivet cuts only through the first
sheet and forms into the middle sheet. The third sheet is not joined
during this process.

▪ Thus new questions arise regarding the post-processing and

measuring of the finished joint.

▪ By simply marking a 3-sheet SPR joint as a 2/3 joint, all needed

changes are made automatically to determine the new measuring
values.

Copyright © simufact engineering gmbh

Geometry export from Forming to Joining

◆ In order to use the same geometries and

meshes in Simufact Forming and
Simufact Joining Optimizer, the
geometries and meshes can now be
exported from Forming to the Joining
database.

◆ Interactive dialogs allow to enter all

required information.

◆ Simufact Forming writes the geometries

and meshes with the given meta
information to reduce the need to edit
files.

Data exchange

◆ Added new import window for UNV files.

◆ Main controls are:

1) Selection of a length unit for the imported mesh.

Data exchange
2) Selection of a proper unit system. Usually Simufact Forming reads the unit system saved in the
UNV file, but sometimes this information is missing.

3) Selection of proper result type. Usually Simufact Forming reads the result ID saved in the UNV file,
but sometimes this information is missing or incorrect.

Data exchange

4) Selection of unit for a particular result value. Usually this data is present in the UNV file, but
sometimes the information is missing or incorrect.

5) Information area shows if the data refer to nodes or integration points as well as the data type
(scalar, vector, tensor).

6) Filter the list, so that only the lines marked yellow need user interaction.

◆ UNV export supports export of rigid bodies.
