Introduction
Alice George, a top performing Assistant Vice President (marketing department) amicably
respected by her staff and dealers, often faces gender discrimination and falls victim to
office politics. Mr. Sen (MD, Conman Systems), Alice’s reporting authority being influenced
by her colleagues, feels that her skill and experience are not relevant to the company’s new
target of increasing customer base in business computing and thus undermines her work
and contribution to the company. Alice informs about the new GM, Mr. Naik inducted by
MD of his unethical approach to which MD turns a blind eye and later transfers Alice to PR
department citing the reason that her skills are better utilised in PR department. Alice’s
interest lies in marketing and feels that her importance in the company is being diminished.
This forces her to think whether to accept it or leave the job.
Statement of Objective
After apprising Mr. Sen about the unethical approach of the newly inducted GM, she finds
herself transferred to PR department. Although, Mr Sen promotes her to the post of VP
(PR), saying that her approach of working is better suited for handling customer and dealer
relationships, Alice feels her importance is being diminished in the company. She had been
expecting to be the VP (Marketing) based on her contribution and stellar performance in the
company but feels upset about being given the PR department.
Decision Problem Statement: Alice falls victim to office politics and gender bias and starts
thinking whether to continue with the job or not.
Alternatives
I. Accept offer and take the responsibility as VP while simultaneously look out for a
job which gives her what she deserves as per her skill and experience.
II. Accept the offer and continue to serve the company as Vice President (PR)
III. Alice can downright reject the offer and resign from the company and look for a
new job.
IV. Politely refuse the offer and continue to work as AVP in the company under Mr.
Naik.

Alternative Selected
Alice should accept the offer and take the charge of VP(PR) as of now but continue to look
for new opportunities in marketing field which give proper recognition and value to her
work experience and skill. In this way she maintains a cordial connection with the MD and
gains some experience of public relations. This will give her time to think and explore her
options while still keeping the job.
