IC131D - Gas Absorption Column - Code 994600

1. General
The IC131D study unit allows to study the absorption process by means of a packed column operating in counter-current.
The absorption consists of melting a gas into a liquid.
This operation allows to separate one or more components of a gaseous mixture and to produce a liquid containing a desired
quantity of a gas.
The unit is supplied with manuals which describe all parts of the trainer, the installation and utilisation procedures, as well as
many exercises with the relative results.
2. Composition
• Column of borosilicate glass: 80 mm internal diameter, length 1600 mm, high packed with 8 mm diameter Rashig rings.
• Water flow meter (800 l/h max flow).
• Air flow meter (5000 Nl/h max flow).
• Gas flow meter (2000 Nl/h max flow).
• 50 l capacity tank.
• No. 2 U-manometers.
• No. 4 sample drawing points.
• No. 4 thermal resistances.
• No. 3 pressure measuring points.

3. Description
The IC131D consists of a column packed with Rashig rings disposed “in confusion”.
Water enters in the upper end of the column pushed by an electrically operated pump that draws from a tank. The gas line is
connected to the bottom end of the column and can be fed either from an air compressor, a gas cylinder or a gas/air mixture.
The liquid and gas lines are both equipped with three flow meters to measure the flow rate of the fluids, while the column is
provided with pressure taps, thermocouples and sample drawing points, enabling the process to be monitored at all times.
A control panel is fitted on the support frame, on which a digital temperature indicator is assembled.
4. Experiments
• Mass balance for absorption systems.
• Column load losses.
• Column efficiency.
• Gas-liquid mass transfer coefficient.
5. Services required
• Electric supply: 220/240 V, 50/60 Hz single-phase, 2 kW.
6. Weight and dimensions
• Dimensions: 1400 x 650 x 2300 h mm
• Weight: 90 kg

SAD/IC131D - Automatic Data Acquisition System for IC131D

1. General
The Data Acquisition System enables to collect and analyse, in real time, data from the IC131D Gas Absorption Column
Plant, through a Personal Computer. So It allows to monitor the plant and it is a useful tool to perform the necessary
experiments.
The system is supplied with an instruction manual which describes the technical features of the system (hardware and
software), explains how to set-up and calibrate the data acquisition system, suggests several exercises and gives sample
experimental data and diagrams.
2. Composition
• Electronic Transducers Kit, complete with Feeding Unit and Signal Conditioning electronics and A/D Conversion Unit
(code 914459).
• Acquisition and Analysis Software for MS-Windows (code 914460).
3. Description
Electronic Transducers Kit, complete with Feeding Unit and Signal Conditioning Electronics, and A/D Conversion
Unit (code 914459).)
The system includes the following electronic transducers, industrial type:
• Air flow rate electronic transducer.
• Carbon dioxide flow rate electronic transducer.
• Water flow rate electronic transducer.
• No.2 differential pressure electronic transducers.

The feeding unit and Signal Conditioning electronics allow the conversion of the signals supplied to standard signals, suitable
for the A/D conversion card. The A/D conversion card operates on 12 bit with a sampling frequency of about 10 kHz. The
unit can be connected to an IBM or compatible Personal Computer through the serial RS-232 port.
Acquisition and Analysis Software (code 914460)
The Acquisition and Analysis Software operates under MS-Windows and allows to capture data from the transducers located
on the plant and to calculate other parameters from the acquired data.
So it is possible to monitor the plant by displaying on the PC screen, in real time, the acquired or calculated parameters and
to manage alarm signals, when a parameter goes out of range.
The software allows to display on the screen or to print the diagrams of the acquired data as a function of time and the
diagrams required in the exercises.
Acquired and calculated data can be saved onto disk in ASCII format.
Besides it is possible to carry out simulations by introducing data through the keyboard.
4. Minimum PC Configuration Required
• PC minimum Pentium with Hard Disk (>10Gb) and CD drive, SVGA graphic card 800x600, mouse, RAM 32 MB, USB
port;
• XPMS-Windows or later versions;
• Graphic Printer.
