He’s been on a ’57 Chevy kick lately and has
been dreaming up different variations of a ’57
Chevy truck with ’57 Bel Air rear sheetmetal.
Minor and major revisions along the way have
resulted in some really awesome and unique looks,
making us wonder what an in-the-flesh version
would look like. As it turns out, we may not have to wait too long
to find out. Resto Rat Customs has decided to tackle a build using
Chad’s ideas as a base. The final build should look very close to the
white version, which we happen to think is the best looking of the
bunch. Be sure to follow Rendered Rides (@renderedrides on IG)

24 DECEMBER 2019 | STREETTRUCKS WWW.STREETTRUCKSMAG.COM

I
’LL ADMIT IT—I ONCE SOLD
A FAVORITE RIDE OF MINE
BECAUSE MY WIFE DIDN’T LIKE
IT. Not only did she not like it, she
didn’t want to be seen in it. I still
miss it, and she knows that if I
ever come across another one like
it, I’m buying it. Believe me—I bring it
up weekly!
Dan Tallant of Kansas City, Missouri,
is a bit more resilient than I was. His wife
calls his ’69 Dodge D100 the “Super Turd”
because she’s of the opinion that it’s ugly,
but that hasn’t affected Dan’s love for the
ol’ Mopar one bit. In fact, it’s one of Dan’s
favorites, and as the owner of a hot rod
shop, he’s owned more than a few custom
rides.
His journey with the Dodge began about
six years ago when he picked it up from a
friend.
“I bought it from a buddy who started
the project—I had to have it since it wasn’t a
C10 or F-100,” Dan says.
The truck definitely needed some
cleaning up, but at the same time Dan
didn’t want to clean it up too much since it
would be seeing shop-truck duty.
“I started with the body,” he says. “The
cab and doors were different colors, so I
matched the color and patina do the bed
and front fenders.”
From there, Dan focused on getting the
truck back on the road. And yes, he chose
everyone’s favorite engine.
“I installed a 5.3 LS and drove it for
a couple of years… hauling motors and
pulling trailers. It was pretty much a daily
driver,” he says.

WWW.STREETTRUCKSMAG.COM STREETTRUCKS | DECEMBER 2019 25

SUPER TURD

But, as is always the case, Dan

eventually wanted to do more to
the truck—a lot more. That included
upping the power quite a bit.
“I decided to install a Magnuson
supercharger with 11 pounds of
boost to wake it up,” he says.
Yeah, that certainly did the
trick, as did the Hooker headers,
and Dan also upgraded the 4L60E
with a built version from Nichols
Performance. After all, with 450-
ish horses now reaching the rear
tires, why take any chances?
As you can tell, though, there’s a
lot more going on with Dan’s Dodge.
The original suspension was in
terrible shape, so in went a JW Rod
Garage Mustang II front suspension
with Firestone airbags, and the
rear got a parallel four-link welded
to the Ford 9-inch, again with
Firestone bags. These upgrades
also yielded some added bonuses,
such as disc brakes and RideTech
shocks, which greatly improved
drivability, but Dan did have to
raise the bed floor to keep the new
suspension package covered up. It
was all worth it, however, especially
once he saw the truck drop down
over the 18x8 and 20x10 Detroit
Steel wheels—perfection!

26 DECEMBER 2019 | STREETTRUCKS WWW.STREETTRUCKSMAG.COM

YEAH, I CAN’T BLAME DAN’S WIFE FOR NOT LIKING HIS TRUCK.
WAIT, YES, I CAN—YOU LEAVE DAN ALONE, LADY! AFTER ALL, IT’S
HAD PLENTY OF TIME TO PROVE ITSELF.
Another neat addition was the pair of ’66 Ford
F-100 bumpers that Dan used to replace the
originals. Although they’re similar to the factory
Dodge bumpers, the Ford versions are slightly more
streamlined and fit the body nicely.
I had already mentioned that Dan had carefully
matched the cab and fenders to the bed’s original
patina, but he had Eric from Pinstriping by Eric
come in and work some of his magic by adding
door signage and freehand pinstriping inside and
out. And Dan was even able to adapt a Truxedo
tonneau cover to the bed to protect anything that
happens to find its way back there.
The truck’s innards are actually a bit more
polished than the outside, with fresh carpet and a
customized Chevy bench seat upholstered by Liberty
Auto Upholstery. Dan used Haywire wiring products
to update the electrical system, and Dakota Digital
gauges add modern reliability without detracting
from the interior’s classic look, especially with that
rad Superior 500 vintage steering wheel sitting atop
the rebuilt Chevy van steering column. Of course,
Dan’s favorite mod has to be the Vintage Air climate
control setup, which keeps things nice and cool on
those hot and humid days.
Yeah, I can’t blame Dan’s wife for not liking his
truck. Wait, yes, I can—you leave Dan alone, lady! DAN DID HAVE TO RAISE THE BED
After all, it’s had plenty of time to prove itself. FLOOR TO KEEP THE NEW SUSPENSION
“I put 35,000 miles on it in the first five PACKAGE COVERED UP. IT WAS ALL
WORTH IT, HOWEVER, ESPECIALLY
years,” Dan says. ONCE HE SAW THE TRUCK DROP DOWN

Webster’s Dictionary defines a unicorn as
a mythical animal typically represented

While this 1951 Chevrolet pickup is not

perhaps in the difficult to create category, too.

the cool ride suspension was
mocked up for not only perfecting
the ’51’s layout capabilities, but
also for riding in comfort.
After all that, there was still
plenty to do. The crew began work
on the rear of the unicorn itself, the
crew cab’s one of a kind floor.
“We built the actual crew cab
on the original frame, and then
sectioned it 3 inches,” Thomas
says. “In addition to that, we
pancaked the hood 3 inches, and
then swapped the crew cab onto
its new frame ...”
Once fabrication was complete,
the bodywork came next. The
classic, yet all new Chevrolet was
fully disassembled and put on the
rotisserie for paint. At that point,
it was time to do the bodywork
and paint on the frame. Once the
frame was reassembled, all the
remaining parts and body were
given the beautiful paint job you
see before you today.

Being able to create this
amazing truck with his wife, father,
and a shop full of friends that
happen to also work for him is one
of the best things Joseph could
have asked for when building this
truck. Thomas wanted to take a
second to give a special thanks to
his wife for letting him build her
dream truck.
“I couldn’t have done it without
the help of our shop crew and
a huge thanks to my
dad, Randy Thomas, for
helping me all along the
way,” Joseph says.

Speaking of the show

by beautiful mountains and
trees. If you looked up on
one of the hills hard enough,
you could even spot the
mountain goats that have
become a big part of the
show’s annual artwork and
theme. Vendors and shop
booths from all over the
country lined the perimeter
of the grounds to support
such an iconic event.
Once the sun started to
set, the fun moved outside
the show site and onto the
town’s street. This is where
the old school feel really set
in. The main strip in front
of the show was lined with
people sitting in chairs and
on tailgates just like the old
Pigeon Forge days. The local
police department led the
start of the cruising and let
everyone cruise, drag, ride
in the bed of trucks and just
have some good old cruising

SCENE AFTER BUYING HIS BRAND NEW 1987 TOYOTA PICKUP. A pro BMX racer,
Billy’s mini was the perfect bike hauler. About that same time, he met a guy
with a lowered Toyota truck and liked the look. Before long, he started going
to shows and, within a very short time, became intrigued with the slammed
truck scene. He joined a few different truck clubs before starting his own club,
Hardcore, in 1989.

AKING A TRUCK FROM MODIFIED DAILY DRIVER TO SOMETHING
SHOW WORTHY CAN BE A HARD TRANSITION FOR VEHICLE
OWNERS. Committing to take that build as a whole to the next level
is usually never the issue—it’s more like remembering to take it at
bit easier on the truck to maintain that pristine condition every
show vehicle aims to be.
Will Meadors of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, however, decided that was
precisely what he wanted to do: spend more time than ever driving this truck once it was
completed. After owning the truck since 2010, Will attended SEMA in 2016 and made the
choice that he needed to step it up. From there, the rest is history.

picture is a bagged Isuzu Amigo scraping
the streets and collecting trophies at the
shows. But that’s exactly how it was in
1998, when this 1990 Isuzu Amigo first
rolled out of Rob Rodell’s fabrication shop
and onto the July 1998 cover of the iconic
magazine, MiniTruckin’..
From Orbisonia, Pennsylvania, Jonathan
Moore describes himself as your “average
everyday grease monkey.” He is a factory worker
by day and wrench turner by night, “living the
life,” as Jon says.
Jon was introduced to the mini-truck scene as
most enthusiasts are, via friends.
“One of my friends was a couple of years older
than me, and he joined the Navy,” Jon recalled.
When he came back for some R and R that
summer of 1993, “he came back in a lowered
Suzuki Samurai. And I was instantly hooked. I
needed a mini-truck.”
This was a time of ground affects, drip paint
jobs, neon lights and wire wheels…anything goes
in an era when extravagance was excellence.
Jon’s first foray into the mini-truck industry
was a 1973 Datsun 620 he picked up for
$150 that was worse for wear even when he
acquired it.
“It had its day before I bought it, but I
squeezed every ounce of life out of it I could,”
remembers Jon.
It was blue with red scallops. The torsions
were cranked down, and it rode on 3-inch

weather, rust eventually got the better of it and
Jon moved on to other projects.
Restoration of Lomego Having always been involved in cars and
trucks, he next picked up a Suzuki Samurai
similar to his high school buddy’s.
“I immediately lowered that thing down 3
inches and threw on some KMC Terminator
2s, and I gave it the classic drip paint job,” Jon
says. It traveled the show circuit all over the
Northeast. “And I immediately knew, I was the
SUV guy—the Suzukis, the Trackers, the Amigos—
those were my things.”

then one day I went to the mailbox and saw this lime

explains.
On the cover was this lime green 1990 Isuzu Amigo,
the Lomego.
Love at first sight? Perhaps, but fast forward nearly
15 years later to when Jon got a phone call from a
friend telling him he had seen Lomego in a yard about
three hours from his house. Jon immediately drove up

“If there was no history with her, I would have taken
it straight to the junkyard,” Jon adds. “It was that bad.”
His very supportive wife, knowing the years he had
pined for the Amigo, encouraged him to buy it, but Jon
didn’t even have a place to store it. He gave his brother
a day’s notice, saying he needed to borrow his garage
for a while.

THE BUILD BEGINS

Like every expert build—or in this case, resuscitation—
the first step was to make a list.
“I basically sat back and assessed all of the damage
and started making a list,” Jon says. One of the biggest
roadblocks to the restoration was finding Isuzu parts in
Pennsylvania. “You basically can’t,” Jon quips.
The last of the Amigos came to America in 1994 (it
wouldn’t return until 1998 as a second generation), and
Isuzu hasn’t sold vehicles in the United States for more
than a decade.
With his family’s support, he got started on it.

EXTERIOR RESTORATION
It was always Jon’s plan to restore the outside of the
Amigo to the exact specifications and look it had
when original owner Rob Rodell and graphics man
Ryan Evans did their magic to it in 1998. However, the
entire body was disfigured and pitted by rust, and
the only elements of the original build that Jon was
able to retain was the body, the wheels, and the front
suspension.

04 Here’s our “better plan,” a 60-inch-wide toolbox from Summit Racing (part #OWE-
44008B). We thought it would be a great idea to install the winch inside the toolbox and
sandwich the toolbox between the winch and the trailer. This will not only keep the elements off
of our new winch, but it will conceal it and protect it from theft as well. The toolbox will also give
us a place to house a battery and tools, and it’s even large enough for a floor jack to fit as well.
05 Our first step to getting all our new
parts installed is centering the toolbox
on the trailer, all the way to the front rail.

06 With
the box
centered, we made
marks through the
winch mounting
plate for the holes
that will secure
everything to the
trailer. We also
marked the larger
hole for our wires
to pass through the
winch plate.

07 For the larger hole we used an appropriately sized hole saw, and for the winch mounting
holes we were able to use a step bit to get the job done. 08 We then set the toolbox back in place
and installed the winch in its new home.

19 Turning our attention back to the winch,

we unbolted it and pulled it out of the

21 There are several wiring connections that we made before bolting

the winch back in place. Summit makes it pretty easy; we just
matched the colored terminal to the corresponding colored wire. This 22 After bolting the winch back in place, we cut the winch wires to

left us with just a red and black (positive and negative) wire to hook up two wires going to each terminal of the battery … well that’s because
to the battery. we want to be able to charge the battery while driving the truck.

23 With the excess wire we had from the battery relocation kit,
we ran a positive and negative wire through the floor of the
toolbox and out the bottom of the trailer. We then grounded the black
(negative) wire to the chassis of the trailer, ran another black wire off
the ground point forward with the red (positive) wire, loomed them in a
mesh wire loom and routed them toward the front of the trailer.
