A. INTRODUCTION

1. Welcome
Welcome to the School of Electrical Engineering (SEE)! We are one of the distinguished
members of International University – Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh city (IU –
VNU HCMC). SEE was formed in 2004 and was among the earliest established schools in IU.
For over a decade and a half of growing, the school has earned a good reputation in the discipline
of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, and as one of the schools who have strong
industrial links.
In 2013, our program has proud to receive the assessment and accreditation of quality by AUN-
DAAD and recently by ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, United
States) as a result of the evaluation visit in December 2018. This success has firmed up our
motivation and encourages us to pursue a higher level in research and teaching activities.

2. Vision and Mission


2.1. International University
a. Vision
By the year 2020, the IU – VNU HCMC will become a top research-oriented university
of Vietnam, which has strong collaborations with worldwide prestigious universities, institutes,
industries, local provinces, and society.

b. Missions
 Offering a high-quality graduate and undergraduate multi-disciplinary education, striving
for all educational programs to be internationally recognized and accredited.
 Offering excellent research including basic and applied research to meet the needs of
industry, local provinces, and society.
 Taking the pioneering role in Vietnam by practicing management excellence, inspiring
and assisting other VNU members in the advancement toward the development of
Vietnam National University – HCMC as a whole.

2.2. School of Electrical Engineering


The mission and vision which have been developed with a participant from industry,
staff, students, and alumni are published at the following URL: (http://see.hcmiu.edu.vn)

a) Vision
It is aimed to become the school with national and international recognition in advanced
teaching methodology, State-of-the-Art research, and innovation.
 Advanced teaching methodology:
 To provide students fundamental and advanced theories and link them to
engineering application.
 To interact with students both inside and outside classrooms.
 To support students with blended teaching.

 To build the modern laboratories involved in research areas of the school and foster
students to join.
 To prepare the academic curriculum involved in research.

 To direct students to recognize current and future problems.
 To teach students the creation and critical thinking.
 To foster students to work in teams for integrated problems.

b) Mission
Being consistent with the mission of the IU – VNU HCMC, SEE aims to:
 Help students to take the best advantage of their educational opportunities and prepare
them with the necessary knowledge to be able to adapt to the rapid change in technology
 Conduct high-quality research that benefits students, scholar and communities
 Transfer technology to solve community problems and create strong collaboration with Industry.

3. Direction of Teaching Activity


Technology has a vast impact in transforming our world and it changes so rapidly that we don’t
notice it. With a desire to provide students an ability to adapt to the change and to keep up with
the regional, national and industrial demand and need, we
- Educate students with comprehensive knowledge and skills required in electronics,
telecommunication, and automation areas.
- Encourage and nurture students’ interest in doing research and link students with large
and famous companies in the industry in order to meet the challenges of this area

4. Career Opportunities
Students who graduate from the School of Electrical Engineering have a great chance to
- Work in domestic or foreign companies related to IC design, consumer electronics,
information technology, and automation
- Work in domestic or foreign communication/network corporations, mobile network,
airlines & transportations companies
- Develop their professional career in the entertainment and advertising industries
- Develop start-up companies and introduce new electrical and communication products to
the market

5. Academic Program
School of Electrical Engineering offers two types of Undergraduate programs:
The Electrical Engineering program at International University (4 years)
1. Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering
2. Automation and Control Engineering
You will have to conduct a study of 4 years fully at the International University. On completion
of this program, you will be awarded the Bachelor of Engineering Degree (B.Eng) by
International University - Vietnam National University, HCMC.

The Twinning program between the International University and a foreign partner
university (2+2 program)
This program allows you to spend the first two years studying at the International University and
the other two years at the partner universities. After completing the second phase and meeting all
requirements from the partner universities, you will be awarded the Bachelor of Engineering
Degree by the partner universities.
Currently, we have only established the twinning program for Electronics and
Telecommunications Engineering. They include:
 The twinning program with University of Nottingham, England.
 The twinning program with SUNY Binghamton, USA
 The twinning program with University of West of England, England

6. Student Outcomes
Graduates from School of Electrical Engineering, EE students should have attained:
1. An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying
principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.
2. An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs
with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social,
environmental, and economic factors.
3. An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences.
4. An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations
and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions
in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.
5. An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership,
create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet
objectives.
6. An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret
data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions.
7. An ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning
strategies.

B. ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING PROGRAM- ELECTRONICS AND
TELECOMMUNICATIONS ENGINEERING (B.Eng)

1. The Program at International University (4 years)


Our program is the credit-based system. We provide a solid foundation in core subjects,
combined with (General and EE) elective courses. You are required to complete at least 144
credits (including thesis) and take an English proficiency exam (different from the English
language entry requirement) to accomplish the program. The English proficiency for graduation
is TOEFL iBT score of 61 or IELTS score of 6.0 overall or equivalent qualification. As part of
your study, in the 3rd year of study (junior year), you have to choose 1 General elective course
(*) and at least 5 EE elective courses (**).
In addition to the required credits, you must also complete (1) two courses of Physical
Training; (2) the Certificate of Military Training and (3) Politics.

C. ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING PROGRAM-AUTOMATION AND
CONTROL ENGINEERING (B.Eng)

1. The Program at International University (4 years)


The Automation and Control Engineering program requires at least 144 credits for graduation. In
addition to these required credits, students have to take non-counting credits and extra-
curriculum activities including two courses of physical training, military training, and English
certificate (*). The four-year academic plan including 3 summer semesters is built to adapt the
student’s English proficiency level with three options
- Academic English is for students who have the highest English proficiency level
- Intensive English 2 is with additional 4 non-counting credits in Intermediate English 2
- Intensive English 1 is with additional 8 non-counting credits in Intermediate English 1
and Intermediate English 2

The Automation and Control Engineering undergraduate curriculum consists of four main
blocks:
- General knowledge offers students a concrete background in English, Mathematics,
Physics and Political and Social Science.
- Core major requirement introduces students to Automation and Control Engineering
fundamentals. The courses apply the foundation principles in mathematics and physics to
the state-of-the-art of Automation and Control Engineering.
- Specialization requirement provides students with an in-depth understanding of current
technology in Automation and Control Engineering domain. The four elective courses are
offered to provide students with a deeper and more detailed understanding in the fields of
Control Applications and Optimization, Industrial Systems and Control, Robotic & AI.
- Professional practice and research help students to be familiar with Engineering
Design Procedure, Engineering Standards and Realistic Constraints. After having
successfully completed 107 credits, student can freely take an internship or senior project.
In the case of choosing internship, the students can either work at their chosen company
with an industrial advisor or do research at EE school with an academic advisor. Duration
of the internship is at least 8 weeks and up to 6-months (with industrial advisor only)
depending on the agreement between students and the host company. The senior project
is mandatory to the final thesis. Students are advised to take the final thesis right after
they passed their senior project.

D. ACADEMIC MATTERS

1. Specialization Selection
After completing the first two years of the program, you are allowed to choose the specialization.
Specialization is the research area which you want to continue in the thesis.
a) Specialization for Electrical Engineering program:

 Signal Processing
b) Specialization for Automation and Control program:
 Control Applications and Optimization
 Industrial system and control
 Robotics & AI
The priority for specialization selection is based on student’s GPA and the quota for each. Once
the specialization is chosen, you have to take the required courses for each specialization, its
relevant elective courses, and the final thesis.

2. Summer Internship Registration


You are allowed to register for the summer internship only after you have achieved at least 107
credits (~75% of total credits). Time for the registration is normally in the year before the
academic year of writing the thesis. The internship requires a minimum of 8 weeks of full-time
working. Students who have taken the summer internship in the past always obtain the following
benefits after completion:
 Form a relationship with people in the industry
 Gain industrial experiences and knowledge which would benefit to the thesis in the final
year
 Address the current challenges in the industry and know how to overcome these
challenges
 Understand personal responsibility and team responsibility

3. Thesis Registration
You have to register for the senior project before the thesis. In order to take the senior project,
you must have successfully completed 107 credits.
Any student who wants to register for the thesis must meet the following conditions:
 Accumulate successfully at least 90% of total credits in the curriculum
 Finish the senior project
 Not under any academic admonishment
After the successful registration, you have 12 weeks (in minimum) to finish and submit your
thesis.

4. Graduation Criteria
Students have to meet all of the following requirements for graduation:
 Fully complete the curriculum (144 credits) with GPA ≥ 50

5. Course Registration
In every semester, you have to do the course registration in which you select the subjects from
the curriculum that are suitable for you. Be careful with your selection because it may affect your
Personal Development plan as well as the final achievement of your degree.

5.1. Registration guidelines


- The registration time is informed by School of Electrical Engineering
- Make your own decision on the course selection
- Course registration can be completed online by using the university link
https://hcmiu.edu.vn/edusoftweb/ (username and password will be created by the university)
- Register from a minimum of 12 credits (standard) to a maximum of 24 credits in one
semester, except for the final semester (in 4th year)
- The subject registration must be approved by the academic advisers
- For exceptional cases, you can address the problems to Dean of School of EE for
consideration

5.2. Adjusting Student Timetable


You are responsible for checking the information shown in your timetable including the number
of registered courses, tuition fees, etc… If you think that there is an error in your timetable,
please report to the SEE Office. You can do it within three days since the timetable
announcement.
We will revise (through the academic advisors) your documents and give feedback to the
problem. Then, we send the necessary documents to the Office of Academic Affairs for
correction approval.

5.3. Adding and Dropping Courses


In the first teaching week, based on the timetable, ability and learning conditions, you can choose
to add or drop the courses online (https://hcmiu.edu.vn/edusoftweb/).

5.4. Academic Probation


The University Academic Committee normally arranges two meetings, after the Fall and

Consistent with the mission of International University “to become a top research-oriented
university in Vietnam and be able to provide high quality human resources to meet the
development of the country”, School of Electrical Engineering established the Master program in
