you learned last time, Kim?

That’s right! Angeline, can you tell us about : Imagery is when an image is evoked through the
symbolism? use of really descriptive language. Imagery means

our next topic?
: Yes sir, we are ready!

C. Motivation

Before we proceed to our new topic today. Let us first

have an activity called “FIX ME I’M BROKEN”.

I will be dividing the class into 5. This group will be

the FIrless group, students on this line will be the
GUdjob, this side will be the RAvan group, these lines
will be the TImwork and students on this side will be
the VEtadine group. Are you ready?
: Yes, sir!
I will be flashing jumbled letters on the TV screen. All
you have to do is to arrange those letters to form a
word.

Please read the instructions. : (ppt)

word on the paper provided by the teacher.
 If you are done, shout your group name and
raise your answer.
 The first group to finish with the correct
word within ten seconds will be given 5
points and the other groups with correct

who will not be able to come up with the
right word will only obtain 2 points.

Is everything clear class? : Yes, sir.

The words are: SIMILE, METAPHOR,

REPETITION, ALLITERATION AND
HYPERBOLE.

(the teacher will facilitate the activity)

D. Presentation of the Lesson

What do you call the words you came up with? Try to

look at your group names class.

FIrless, GUdjob, RAvan, TImwork, and VEtadine

Now, who can tell me what we call the words you : Sir those words are some of the figurative
came up with? languages we often see in literature.

Precisely! Those words are types of figurative

language which we will be discussing today.

E. Discussion / Analysis

Figurative language class is defined as the any figure

of speech which depends on a non-literal meaning of
some or all the words used.
January 31, 2018

Also, it presents ordinary things in fresh ways,

communicating ideas that go beyond words’ ordinary
meanings. Which means that it has a deeper meaning
aside from its literal meaning.

There are many types of figurative language used in

literature and even in our daily life but today, we will
only discuss five of it.

The first one is Simile. Who has a prior knowledge : Simile sir, uses the words “like” or “as” to compare
about simile? Yes Arnold? one object or idea with another to suggest they are
alike.
Correct! A simile is a figure of speech involving the
comparison of one thing with another thing of a
different kind, used to make a description more
emphatic or vivid. : Sense of smell sir.

For example: Arnold is as brave as lion.

Who wants to give another example? (students answer may vary)

For the next figure of speech, we have is Metaphor.

The metaphor states a fact or draws a verbal picture

using comparison. A simile would say you are like
something; a metaphor is more positive - it says you
are something.

For example: Alex is a flower that blooms every day.

Alexa, give us another example. : PJ is a book that walks.

Who else wants to give an example? : (students answer may vary)

Very good! : Sir the line “Her nails were long, but they were not
painted.”
Let us move on to the next one which is Alliteration.
Alliteration is a literary device where two or more : Because it draws a mental picture and it appealed
words in a phrase or line of poetry share the same to my sense of sight.
beginning sound. The words can be in line or can be
separated by one or more words. Usually the (students answer may vary)
beginning consonants in the words are used for
the alliteration

An example of this is: Peter piper picked a peck of

pickled pepper.
: Because the consonant P was used at the beginning
What made the sentence an example of alliteration? of each word.
Yes, Carl?

Exactly!

For the next type, we have repetition.

It is a literary device that repeats the same words or
phrases a few times to make an idea clearer and more
memorable. As a verbal device, it could be a word, a
phrase, or a full sentence, or a poetical line repeated to
emphasize its significance in the entire text.

For example:
Oh, woeful, oh woeful, woeful, woeful day!
--Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet

Who else want to share an example?

: My God, my God please answer me.
Yes, Kim?
January 31, 2018

Very good!

For the last one, we have Hyperbole. Who wants to

share his/her prior knowledge about what Hyperbole : Hyperbole is the use of exaggerated words or
is? Yes Jasmine? phrases that it becomes unbelievable.

Precisely!

Hyperbole are exaggerated statements or claims not

meant to be taken literally.

Who wants to give us an example of hyperbole? : (students answer may vary)

Very good!

I have it here a poem entitled Africa written by David

Diop.

Let us read the poem.

: (students will read the poem)
Africa my Africa
Africa of proud warriors in ancestral savannahs
Africa of whom my grandmother sings
On the banks of the distant river
I have never known you
But your blood flows in my veins
Your beautiful black blood that irrigates the fields
The blood of your sweat
The sweat of your work
The work of your slavery
Africa, tell me Africa
Is this your back that is unbent
This back that never breaks under the weight of
humilation
This back trembling with red scars
And saying no to the whip under the midday sun
But a grave voice answers me
Impetuous child that tree, young and strong
That tree over there
Splendidly alone amidst white and faded flowers
That is your Africa springing up anew
springing up patiently, obstinately
Whose fruit bit by bit acquires
The bitter taste of liberty.
Who can cite a line from the poem with a figurative
language and tell what particular figure of speech it is? : Sir the line Africa my Africa, an example of
Yes, King Ace? repetition.
That’s right!

Any other answer?

(sets of answers will be given by the students)

: Yes, sir!
Based from the examples given, what do you think is
the difference between a figurative language and : when we say literal meaning, it is the surface
literal meaning. meaning or the dictionary meaning while the
figurative language deals with the deeper meaning.
Very good!

Did you understand our topic today, Darwin?

You all have great understanding! Give yourselves the
