1 Introduction
1.1 Purpose
This specification is written to document the information that is to be used to perform the pipe stress
analysis calculations on the Ivar Aasen Field pdQ project. The Piping Stress Analysis Procedure details
the methods, codes and standards that are to be used to perform the stress analysis. This document
contains the required input design data that shall be used for the calculations.
The calculation input data includes the loading parameters to be used in the Caesar II pipe stress
analysis program for the wind, blast and transport loads. A minimum of three calculations are required to
be completed for each comprehensive calculation on the hydrocarbon process lines and the safety
critical line.. They are Operating, Transport and Blast. At the discretion of the Pipe Stress Engineer
additional calculations may be required.

2 Specific Criteria to be Used for Stress Analysis

2.1 Software and Sign Convention
The pipe stress analysis shall be completed using the Pipe Stress Analysis program Caesar II version
5.31. For each Caesar II model North shall be in the –X direction, Up shall be in the +Y direction and
East shall be in the –Z direction.

Metric units to be used as per the Pipe Stress Analysis Procedure.

2.2 Ambient Temperature

The installation temperature shall be input in the special execution parameters in each Caesar II
calculation. The maximum and minimum ambient temperatures shall be used by the Stress Engineer as
applicable for the stress range calculations.
 Minimum Ambient temperature: -7 ºC
 Maximum Ambient temperature: 26 ºC
 Construction Installation Temperature 21 ºC

2.3 Design Life

The design life of the platform is 25 years.

2.4 Imposed Structural Deflections

The imposed structural displacements of the topside shall be included in the Caesar II analysis for
the following design criteria;

 Dropped object deflections shall be run as occasional loads in the operating condition.
 Imposed deck deflections shall be considered from the platform lift/transport case.
 Changes in the deflected shape of the deck due to the change in the deck support points
between the construction phase and the topsides final installed position.

The structural deck deflection data will be required to be supplied by the Structural Design Team for
each of the above conditions.

2.5 Wind Loading

The wind loading in Table 2.3-1 below is taken from the Ivar Aasen Master Package Specification,
Appendix A. The wind velocity vs. elevation values for a 3 second gust shall be used for the 100 year
design operating load cases.
The Global Elevation (above mean water level) coordinate is required to be input at the first Caesar II
calculation node number in each calculation.
Wind shall be analysed from 4 horizontal directions as necessary using +/- WIN1 and +/- WIN 2.
The wind load case for the 10000 year return period will not be run as an occasional load case
because the loads are less than the Blast load case.
LAT elevation is set at +472800mm for the project.

2.6 Blast Loading Analysis

A Blast Loading analysis shall be completed on all stress critical lines containing hydrocarbons and
all safety critical lines. It shall be applied with the operating load conditions of temperature and
pressure etc.

The blast load shall be input as a static pressure using the wind loading pressure versus elevation
criteria in the Caesar II pipe stress analysis program. The following design criteria shall be used;
 The pipe shape factor shall be taken as 0.7
 The dynamic load factor for the blast shall be 1.5
 The blast load case will be applied with the piping operating temperatures and
pressures.
 The blast load will be taken to be as listed in the pdQ areas below.
 Snow and ice loading will not be considered in combination with blast.
 SIF’s can be set to 1.0 as per ASME B31.3 Interpretation Number 6.

Area B :- Blast load = 0.1 Bar drag load hydrocarbon and safety critical piping
Area C :- Blast load = 0.1 Bar drag load hydrocarbon and safety critical piping
Area D :- Blast load = 0.2 Bar drag load hydrocarbon and safety critical piping
Area E :- Blast load = 0.1 Bar drag load hydrocarbon and safety critical piping
Area F :- Blast load = 0.2 Bar drag load hydrocarbon and safety critical piping
Area G :- Blast load = 0.2 Bar drag load hydrocarbon and safety critical piping

For vent/flare piping take blast drag load to be 0.1 bar.

Using these criteria the wind profile for the blast loading for area F will be applied as
0.2 Bar x 1.5 dynamic factor = 0.3 Bar.
The wind shape factor shall be turned off for areas where the piping is shielded from the blast area.
Based on the isometric coordinates the 0.3 Bar loading shall be applied in the Caesar II wind pressure
vs elevation loading table at each elevation.
The allowable stress values for the Blast load case are listed in the project “Pipe Stress Analysis
Procedure”

2.7 Pipe Slug Loading

The maximum expected liquid slug from the Hanz riser to be used for the sizing of the production
separator is 15 m3. Other lines that will be subjected to slugging loads shall be defined by the
Process Department. Typically these lines are the two phase flow lines and other systems such as
the fire main deluge system.

The slug size and velocity shall be defined by the Process Department. The slug load forces (F1, F2
etc.) will be calculated based on size and velocity of the slug and will be applied as static loads to
elbows and tees in the Caesar II analysis Operating load cases.

2.8 Wave Loads

The platform import and export risers will be subjected to green water wave loading. Wave loading on
the risers final make up spools, for the Operating load cases, will be calculated using Caesar II based on
the 100 year wave condition. See Table 2.6.1 below.

2.9 Earthquake ALS Accelerations

Piping and equipment shall be designed to resist accelerations and forces due to a 10000 year return
period earthquake. The 10,000 year return period (ALS) earthquake accelerations are given in Table
2.7.1 below.

As the accelerations for this load case are considerably lower than the values for the transport load
cases it is not normally run.

2.10 Transport Accelerations for Tow to Field

The 10 year return period acceleration response for the barge tow out from module construction site to
the field is given below. This is based upon the worst combination of sea state and wave direction. A
worst case figure is given and this shall apply to all the piping in the pdQ.
The 10 years return period shall be used for ULSa and ULSb transportation (tow to field) condition. The
10 year extreme accelerations are given below in Table 2.10.1.

2.11 Snow and Ice Loading

Snow load on exposed horizontal surface and pipework shall be 0.5 KN/m2.

The ice loading caused by rain and snow on exposed horizontal and vertical piping surfaces shall be
included with a thickness of 10mm and a density of 900 kg/m3.
Snow and Icing in the Operating load cases shall be considered in combination with the 100-year
return period of the other environmental conditions.
The tables below show that the snow loading is considerably higher than the ice loads so the ice
loads will not be considered.

2.13 Pipe Support Loads

Large pipe support loads are to be given to the Structural Group for analysis. For this project a large
load is defined as a load in excess of 20KN vertical and/or 10KN horizontal.

Standard pipe support spans are defined in document DN02-DN-L-SP-0003.

The maximum pipe support, vendor package and pressure vessel loads will be taken from the
maximum and minimum design temperature loads. These load cases are listed in Section 3 below.
The worst combination of Load cases 4 to 26 will be used.

The pump and compressor nozzle reaction loads will be taken from the max operating load cases
that are listed in Section 3 below. The worse combination of loads from Load Cases 14 to18 will be
used..

3 Load Case Definitions

The met ocean operating criteria for the Ivar Aasen pdQ project are defined by the 100 years
environmental criteria. Hence, all equipments and systems have to be able to operate during a 100
year storm.
The Input loads to be used for the Load Cases are defined as follows:
W = Pipe Weight (operating). Includes weight of pipe, components, contents and insulation
if any.
WW = Pipe Weight (water filled)
WNC = Pipe Weight No Contents (empty)
P1 = Design Pressure. ( Max value ).
P2 = Min Design Pressure.
P3 = Max Operating Pressure. If required.
HP = Pressure (Hydro test).
T1 = Temperature (maximum design)
T2 = Temperature (minimum design)
T3 = Temperature (max operating, used at user discretion)
T4, T5, T6 etc will be used when considering multiple pump and relief valve operations.
D1 = Imposed Displacement (at max. design for equip. nozzle or pipe connection)
D2 = Imposed Displacement (at min. design for equip. nozzle or pipe connection)

For a specific analysis, the number of load cases required will vary. If there are no forces (F) or imposed
displacements (D), those cases won’t be analyzed.

Note

In all the load case sets it is the responsibility of the Stress Engineer to indicate where hold downs are
required on the pipe supports shown on the Stress Isometric. The Stress Engineer must also confirm
that the summary pipe support loads match the values in the Caesar II output load cases. It is particulary
important that this manual check is completed were pipe supports are designed with gaps.

Note: For transport analysis, fluid contents must be set to zero in the CAESAR II input to prevent
acceleration loading on the pipe’s contents being included in the analysis results. WNC
does not remove the fluid weight from accelerations.
In the load case options the spring hangers are to be set to “rigid” for the transport analysis.

4 Special Stress Analysis Considerations

4.1 Modal Analysis
The flow lines from the trees to the production manifold are subject to two/three phase flow. To minimise
the rise of these lines vibrating an additional normal modes analysis will be runs as follows;
 Complete a static analysis of the piping system.
 From the ‘Analysis’ tab in the Caesar II main menu, select ‘Dynamics’
 In the ‘Analysis Type’ pull-down menu, select ‘Modal’
 Select the ‘Control Parameters’ tab and complete the following entries:
Table 4.1-1 Control Parameters

Setting Parameter

1 4 Static Load Case for Nonlinear Restraint Status

2 1 Stiffness Factor for Friction (0.0 = not used)

3 5 Max. No. Of Eigen values Calculated (0 = not used)

4 10 Frequency Cut off (Hz)

5 LUMPED Mass Model (LUMPED/CONSISTENT)

6 Y Sturm Sequence check on Computed Eigen values (Y/N)

The flow line calculated minimum natural frequency should be above 4 Hz. If the system has a natural
frequency below this value then additional pipe supports are required.

5 Allowable Nozzle Loads

5.1 Pressure Vessels, Heat exchangers, Atmospheric tanks, Skid mounted packages
Maximum calculated piping nozzle loads for Pressure vessels, Heat exchangers, Atmospheric tanks and
Skid mounted packages shall be according to NORSOK R-001, section 5.1.5. See equations below.
Forces and moments may act simultaneously in all three directions. Allowable loads for nozzles < 2”
shall be equal to the values for 2”.
M = 4x(DN-25)1.4+2x10-5xPNx(DN)2.7 [Nm]

F = 7.5x(DN)1.2+0.1xPNx(DN)1.2 [N]

Where
PN = Flange pressure class [Bar] (150# = PN 20, i.e. 20)
DN = Nozzle nominal diameter [mm] (16”= 400mm, i.e. 400)
F = Circumferential, Longitudinal shear & Radial force [N]
M = Bending moment [Nm]

See Table 5.1-1 for calculated values.

5.2 Pumps
Centrifugal pumps shall be able to withstand the loads specified in the API 610 code, with the
following multiplication factors for normal operating conditions.

Horizontal/vertical Pumps: 2xAPI610 for ratings Class 150

4xAPI610 for rating Class 300
6xAPI610 for all ratings above Class 300
These are minimum multiplication factors. Higher multiplication factors are acceptable.

5.3 Compressors
The compressor nozzles shall be able to withstand 4×NEMA SM23, both individually and combined for
normal operating conditions.

5.4 Christmas Tree Piping Connections

The maximum calculated Christmas tree piping reaction loads shall be as per API Technical Report

Conclusions

This Calculation satisfies the structural integrity and the flexibility requirements of the ASME B31.3
Process Piping Code.
The Equipment Nozzle Loads are within the allowable values provided by the vendor for the Operating
load cases and less than 150% of the allowable value for the Blast load case.

All flanges and hubs have been evaluated as per the Project Pipe Stress Analysis Procedure DN02-SM-
L-KA-0001 and all ratios are less than 100%.
All the Flange and hub ratios are less than 150% for blast load cases.
