Image and Sound (MEDA2201)

Weightage: 20 marks

 Students are required to use digital camera to shoot some still images of
any subject for e.g.: Nature, Omani culture, Historical monuments etc.

 They are advise to compose shots in different sizes of any chosen subject
which conveys a story..
 First construct an idea, think of a story and then execute accordingly.

Compile your photographs in Microsoft word, complete with the explanation of

each image.
Assignment must be printed.

Consider the visual codes you have learnt so far (non-verbal communication,
high/low camera angle, tilt, framing, point-of-view, lighting, colour, image
choice and cropping, etc.) you must pay particular attention to the following:

meaning(s) of the image.

You must have atleast 6 images in your assignment.
You can help out each other and work in a small group of 2-3 people, but you
must take pictures yourself, create your own story and assignment must be
submitted individually.
No image copying/sharing between group members.

Final day of submission is at the end of week5.

Be creative! Use your imagination to create a story for your images.

Use digital camera.
Try to take snapshots of your subject few times, so you can choose the one with
the best quality.

Very long shot (VLS)
This shot shows a general area where the hostel
is located.
The lighting type in this image is natural lighting,
no sharp shadow in the image.

Mid shot (MS)
This image has high naturalistic
modality.
“After spending 1 hour with my sister, its
time for me to go home. But she comes
closer to me and hug me and don’t want
to let me go.”
Close up (CU)
This CU framing suggest the relation
between my sister and me is very close
“Upon arrival at the front door of the hostel, I
can see that she is waiting for me.”
Long shot (LS)
This shot uses horizontal camera angle,
suggesting that we have an equal power
relation between my sister and me.
“She smiles a lot and in a very
happy mood”
Medium close up (MCU)
“From the look in her eyes, I have a
feeling that she wants me to stay
longer. But I told her that I would come
again next week!”
Extreme close up (ECU)
This ECU framing can really capture the
emotion of the person in the frame.
