DzSee You in Delhidz The message that India gave to the world on closing ceremony
of Common Wealth Games (CWG), Melbourne. India is the second ever
developing country to organize a world third largest multi-sport event. CWG is
scheduled in Delhi from 4 th Oct. to 16 th Oct. The question here arises,dzIs this a
step towards a Indiaǯs journey to become super-power or just a waste of money
which India could invest in human development or any other sector?

Positive impacts of CWG for the Indian economy: -

- p Infrastructure > Delhi is one the modern and planned city of the country.
However due to heavy inflow of tourism because of CWG, the city needs to
be beautified, New structures, Hotels, Transport services are improved by
the government. Thus the basic step towards the developed economy,
INFRASTRUTURE, is improved with CWG.

- p Transportation > Various plans like widening of roads, construction of

under-bridges and over-bridges at various railway crossings, Special
extension of Metro rail for the easy access of tourists, Special 4 lane road
linked between games village and Jawaharlal Nehru ground for the hassle
free drive for the players, New construction of terminal III at international
airport, High capacity modern-style buses on the roads, etc are carried by
the government to ensure the modern look of the city. One can say on the
name of CWG, this is a gift for the city, which is the essential part of the
development. The standard of living of the country will gradually increase
if such events lead to mass development.

- p Tourism >There are 71 Nations participating in the CWG. Therefore it is a

great attraction for tourism targeting people coming to India as a
audience. The true impact of the CWG on tourism, can be judged better if
one is to look at the various possibilities for marketing, advertising,
educating and introducing a new India for the sportspersons, their
entourage and other global visitors to the country. Other cities that have
hosted the CWG have recorded major spurt in tourism since their chance
at this excellent reason for global travelers giving the countries a chance
to present a newer, vibrant youth-appeal to their land.State-of-art
technology deployments is helping in ensuring world -class management
of Delhi city during the event and also leave a sure, culturally strong
imprint as valuable legacy of classy Indian hospitality on visitors to the
CWG while major economic boost from the CWG will raise tourism
opportunities for our country, if basic amenities and modern tourist
needs are kept in mind while formulating and promoting specialized
tourism sectors.
- p Other Benefits :-
p New Stadiums and renovation of existing stadiums :-The
construction of new stadiums, swimming pools, TT halls, etc etc .
will help the city to get the modern equipped sports complex.
p Games Village :- A village created for participants to live will later
used by DU for hostel services. Thus improvement in quality of
living in hostels would be seen.
p Urban infrastructure like water and electricity
p Efforts to make Delhi Dzworld-classdz

Negative Impacts of CWG on Indian economy:-

- p Xarge-scale expenditure on CWG, Will it prove to be a investment or just a

dead investment giving no returns? According to urban development
minister S Jaipal Reddy Rs. 28054 Cr. Has been spent on CWG. From this
only 670 Cr. Has been direct investment for games. Other expenses
includes infrastructure and beautification of the city. Economist says
instead of showing off the development, India should rather invest such a
amount for education, Health facilities, Poverty eradication etc.

- p In the attempt to make the World class Delhi, Demolition of slums and
other areas are seen. Approximately 6 lachawkers willhave to face the
evacuation during games. Thus World class Delhi on the darker side is
creating a difference between rich and poor in the city.

- p The city has major water and electricity problems at present, which might
increase for the common people because of CWGas the special focus is to
provide best quality to the tourists instead of Indian citizens.

Well from the economic point of view, with the increase in the infrastructure,
development increases, as the construction activities increase, there is increase
in need of labour and more employment opportunit ies are created. The demand
for Raw materials increase which in turn increases price welcoming economic
growth. The same scenario was seen during Olympics held in china. Iron prices
all over Asia had increased due to Olympics. Thus one can say that such events
are necessary for the developing countries especially to those countries which
has strong foundation to become super powers in near future. But every coin has
two sides, the other side indicates that this investment would hardly uplift the
people living below the poverty line or else they are the one to suffer the most in
this. The benefits of huge investment are enjoyed by the richer segment of the
country, Eg. GMR group. Thus richer becomes richer and poor becomes poorer.
India should rather focus on such issues than creating a mark of developed
country without any firm foundation. There is no point of hiding economic
problems to show the world class Delhi.
