Clinical Terminology Database - CTD

What it is:
A Master clinical glossary of roughly 500 critical terms translated into 40 languages, created by TPT to be
used with all Life Sciences jobs. The terms were selected by reviewing a large amount of clinical
glossaries and material, and then vetted through several rounds of terminologists, pharma linguists, and
clinicians. The result is a comprehensive, solid base for clinical terms that will be used for all TPT Life
Sciences & pharma material moving forward.

In short – it’s a mandated new standard for LifeSci glossaries for use on all jobs.

Why it was created:

Glossaries are critically important tools for translation. They improve quality, consistency, and give
translators and reviewers valuable information to ensure they’re using up to date, industry standard
terminology. They also allow PMs who don’t speak target languages to verify this usage. With so many
end clients and so much similar material across clients and production teams – TPT needs a single base
solution which can be used to maintain consistency and quality across all work – the CTD is that solution.

What if a client already has a glossary?

Larger clients will still maintain their own client-specific glossaries. Jobs for these clients will use both
the client specific and the CTD glossaries, with the CTD acting as the secondary glossary. The client’s
preferences will trump the CTD in these cases. Instructions on how to do this in Wordfast and PD follow
below.

I’m a PM, what should I do?

Effective immediately, you should be sending the CTD for all LifeSci or other clinical jobs to all linguists
for all jobs as well as using it yourself during the Final Eye process.

I’m a translator and/or reviewer, what should I do?

Familiarize yourself with the terminology, and pay close attention on how to connect to the CTD through
Wordfast. Let us know of questions after you have taken the time to look through the material. It’s
critical that you’re able to connect to and use the CTD through Wordfast.

Using the CTD:

CTD is just like any glossary (brush up with instructions in the main TMGR instructions attached along
with this message ‘Remote Glossaries Linguist Instructions’), but with 1 key difference: CTD will often
mean you’re using 2 glossaries at the same time

Because the CTD will be used alongside client glossaries, it’s important to learn a few things about how
to use 2 glossaries at once.

Connecting to multiple glossaries

Connect to both glossaries in the Glossary List by checking ‘Active’ for both of them. Hit ‘Apply’.

Assigning Priority

On the left menu, go to ‘Glossary

Priority’, then use the Up and
Down arrow keys on the right to
move the priority up and down
in the list. The Top of the list will
get first priority.

Both entries will show up – in order of glossary priority (more below), and look like this:

You can see the Symbolic Name of each glossary at the bottom of the entry. Interesting in this example,
the term ‘Site’ is in both the Quintiles and CTD EN>ESLA glossaries, but there is more context in the
Quintiles version.

Hierarchy of CTD, Client Glossary, and TM

Now that we see how to connect to 2 glossaries simultaneously, what is the hierarchy – ie which term
should be used if there is a discrepancy between glossaries?

1. Client Specific Glossary if it exists

2. CTD
3. 100% matches from TM
4. Concordance or fuzzy TM matches

This is somewhat case by case – if you are really stuck on which to choose or believe that a term is
incorrect, please contact your project manager who will review.
