TOPIC: CONCEPTS OF PAPER CRAFT


 Papercraft
 A hobby of crafting three-dimensional models out of paper.
 It is involves cutting out shapes and holding them together with glue.
 Many types of papercrafts originate from other cultures.

Two popular example of paper craft are:


1. Origami
a. It is the Japanese art of paper folding using specialized paper in various colors and
textures.
2. Paper maché
a. It is origin by Chinese, which involves covering various shaped objects with strips of
paper and paste.

Papercraft Activities
1. Holiday papercrafts
o It most common types of papercrafting activities.
o It used a variety of paper sources, from newspaper, paper bags, construction paper and
even tissue paper.
o Festive ornaments which came from paper dolls to chains can be fashioned together
from paper and used as garland for holiday decorating.

2. Gift wrapping

o Holidays, birthdays, or other special occasions.


o It is a popular and fun papercrafting activity.
o Newspaper and paper bags can be used for wrapping gifts.
o With the used of food coloring and tissue paper it will add colorful tie-dye effects.

3. Card making

o The most popular types of card-making papercrafts is known as paper tole.


o Paper Tole - The art of handcrafting three-dimensional pictures using layered elements
from multiple, identical flat prints.
o The most intricate application of this technique involves layering and shaping the paper
pieces to achieve depth and shadow.

4. Pepakura

o A Japanese paper craft in which flat paper models are cut out, folded, and it constructed
into hollow models in three dimensions.
o The process of assembling pepakura involves folding, gluing, and fitting together the
pieces.
o In some designs, not all the edges connect, creating interesting effects.

Terminologies in Paper Craft


1. Acid Free paper
 Paper with a neutral or basic pH level (7.0 to 9.0), is less prone to yellowing or
deterioration.
 During production, the paper is treated with a mild base (calcium carbonate or magnesium
bicarbonate) that neutralizes the natural acids in the wood pulp.
 It extend the life of paper, reduces production expense, and easily recycled.
 It may be identified by the 'infinity' symbol.

Different Types of Paper

a) Handmade Paper - Paper made by spreading wet wood or paper pulp on a porous screen in a
mold, pressing and drying the resulting mat.
b) Joss Paper - Gold and silver paper burned by the Chinese in spiritual ceremonies.
c) Kraft paper - Strong and relatively coarse, it is brown or white color.
It is used for paper grocery bags, corrugated cardboard, large envelopes and other packaging.
d) Laid Paper - Paper with a grid texture and strong grain.
e) Glassine - A smooth and semi-transparent paper.

2. Collage – Papers glued to a flat surface.


3. Decoupage – a Victorian craft of cutting out image or motifs from paper, gluing them to a
surface covering them with a protective coating such as varnish.
