Lecture 8

Case Study Guide Introduction

Prof James Busfield

MAT 602 – Case Study Aims 1
⚫ Develop ideas concerning materials selection
⚫ Consider how geometry and materials choices impact
manufacturing options
⚫ Develops an appreciation of cost considerations both from a
standpoint of material costs and capital requirements
⚫ Highlights the role of volume of manufacture on the cost
calculation

MAT 602 - Materials Selection in Design

MAT 602 – Case Study Objectives 1
⚫ To develop simultaneous engineering concepts
⚫ During design - the selection of material and the choice of
manufacturing routes are interrelated and interdependent
operations

MAT 602 - Materials Selection in Design

Examination Assessment 1
⚫ Your exam will include 2 sections:
A. Multiple Choice (from the whole course)
B. Completion Answers (taken from from my lectures and the case
studies)

⚫ Every student should therefore make comprehensive notes

on each case study
⚫ If you do not know it by the end of term then you will not know it by
the time of the exam

MAT 602 - Materials Selection in Design

Reasons for Working in a Group 1
⚫ Integrate knowledge and skills from a range of
multidisciplinary modules.
⚫ Acquire knowledge through self-study.
⚫ Teach students how to work in groups and manage group
projects.
⚫ Improve and develop the communication skills of the
students.
⚫ Develop the problem solving skills of the students.

MAT 602 - Materials Selection in Design

Group Meetings 1
⚫ Throughout the project it is expected that you will meet at
least once every week.
⚫ To make these meeting work you must assign group roles.
⚫ The chairman has the task of directing the conversation.
⚫ The scribe does so by taking down important matters on a white
board or flip chart.
⚫ One students acts as secretary.

MAT 602 - Materials Selection in Design

Role of Visiting Lecturer 1
⚫ Each case study has a Visiting lecturer who:
⚫ Conceives the case study
⚫ Creates a written brief
⚫ Assesses how the student groups deal with the case study
⚫ Provides feedback at the end of the case study
⚫ Students can contact the Visiting Lecturer using the web
based forum throughout the case study

MAT 602 - Materials Selection in Design

Stepped Project Plan 1

⚫ Step 1 Explain unknown wording, statements

and concepts
⚫ Step 2 (Re/)Define the problem
⚫ Step 3 Brain-storming
⚫ Step 4 Make a systematic inventory
⚫ Step 5 Formulate self-study assessments
⚫ Step 6 Perform self-study assessments
⚫ Step 7 Report on self-study

MAT 602 - Materials Selection in Design

Assessment 1
⚫ The students will be expected to submit the following at the
completion of the project:
⚫ A short 4 page maximum length report including supporting
evidence. Submitted electronically by one group member before
4pm the day before the presentation using QM+.
⚫ An 7 minute maximum oral presentation. Submitted electronically by
one group member on QM+ before 9am on the date of the
presentation.
⚫ This work will be assessed to generate a group mark, which
is then moderated by the feedback from a formal peer
review process completed at the conclusion of the project.

MAT 602 - Materials Selection in Design

What makes a good presentation? 1
⚫ Preparation is vital / rehearse the schedule
⚫ Know your script
⚫ No more than 2 presenters (pick your best team)
⚫ 7 minutes is not long - keep to time
⚫ 3 words per second > 1220 words maximum
⚫ 7 pages maximum for your PPT
⚫ Do not read a script or for that matter your presentation
⚫ Makes sure that the presentation supports your ideas
⚫ Keep fonts size above 20pt
⚫ Think about your target audience

MAT 602 - Materials Selection in Design

Your role 1
⚫ Individuals in the group should demonstrate:
⚫ Ability to analyse
⚫ Inventiveness
⚫ Critical ability
⚫ Theoretical knowledge
⚫ Practical skills
⚫ As well as your group contributions which may be:
⚫ Chairman
⚫ Minutes secretary
⚫ Writer
⚫ Presenter
⚫ Proactive fact finding group member
