Course Materials

• Textbook: Digital Control System Analysis and Design, 3rd edition, C. L. Phillips
and H. T. Nagle, Jr. Prentice Hall, N.J., 1995, ISBN:0-13-309832-X. (A new edition,
the 4th edition, has been published. However, we will use the 3rd edition in this class)

• Supplementary Books: Discrete-Time Control Systems, 2nd edition, K. Ogata,

Prentice Hall, 1995; Digital Control of Dynamic Systems, 3rd edition, G. F. Franklin,
J. D. Powell, and M. L. Workman, Addison Wesley, 1998.

• Class Notes: to be distributed during classes.

Prerequisite:

• ECE 382 or equivalent;

• Access to MATLAB (a student edition is sufficient).

Homework:

• There will be approximately 7 homework assignments, each will be announced in class

and due one week later;
• Homeworks are due at the beginning of the class on the due date. No late homework
will be accepted;
• All necessary steps towards obtaining the solution, including printouts of the
MATLAB code and plots if necessary, must be included for full credit;
• One homework with the lowest scores will be dropped;
• You are strongly advised to solve independently as many of the homework problems
as you possibly can. Discussion with other students is allowed only when this is not
possible.

Exams:
• There will be two midterms and one final exam (time/location to be announced);
• During the exams, you can only refer to a single-sided, A4-sized formula sheet and a
calculator, but nothing else, to solve the problems;
• There will be no makeup exam without a note from a doctor or the Dean of Students.
If you have an unavoidable conflict with a scheduled exam, please let me know at least
one week in advance so we can make arrangements.
Regrading policy: All requests for regrading must be submitted within one week of the
exam return in order to receive consideration. If you desire a regrading on an exam, please
attach a note to your paper stating which problems and discrepancies you found and submit
the paper to me. Be sure to look at the solutions before asking for a regrading.

Final Grade:

• Homework: 15%;
• Midterms: each 22.5%, thus in total 45%;
• Final: 39.5%;
• Completing the course evaluation: 0.5%. At the end of the semester, by completing
the course evaluation online at

https://engineering.purdue.edu/ECE/evals.html

and notifying me by email, you will receive this credit.

• After all the scores are obtained and summed up according to the above weights, the
accumulative scores will be used to determine the letter grade through a set of cutoff
points. These cutoff points will only be available after the final exam.
Course Content: The course introduces feedback computer controlled systems, the com-
ponents of digital control systems, and system models on the z-domain (z-transfer functions)
and on the time domain (state variable representations.) The objectives for system design
and evaluation of system performance are considered. Various discrete-time controllers are
designed including PID-controllers, state and output feedback controllers, and reconstruc-
tion of states using observers. The systems with the designated controllers are tested by
simulations.

Course Outcome:
A student who successfully fulfills the course requirements will have demonstrated:

1. An understanding of digital feedback control systems

2. A knowledge of constructing discrete-time mathematical model system

3. A knowledge of analyzing the system behavior using discrete-time model and evaluating
the system performance

4. A knowledge to use controller design techniques to make the system behavior satisfy
specified design objectives

5. An ability to evaluate and test the system performance using digital simulations
