Par Inc is a major manufacturer of golf equipment. Management believes that Par’s market share could be
increased with the introduction of a cut-resistant, longer-lasting golf ball. Therefore, the research group at Par
has been investigating a new golf ball coating designed to resist cuts and provide a more durable ball. The
tests with the coating have been promising. One of the researchers voiced concern about the effect of the
new coating on driving distances. Par would like the new cut-resistant ball to offer driving distances
comparable to those of the current-model golf ball. To compare the driving distances for the two balls, 40
balls of both the new and current models were subjected to distance tests. The testing was performed with a
mechanical hitting machine so that any difference between the mean distances for the two models could be
attributed to a difference in the design.
The results of the tests, with distances measured to the nearest yard, are contained in the data set “Golf”.
Prepare a Managerial Report
1. Formulate and present the rationale for a hypothesis test that Par could use to compare the driving
distances of the current and new golf balls.

μ1 = mean distance of Current ball

μ2 = mean distance of New ball
H0 = μ1 = μ2;
H1 = μ1 not equals to μ2

Test which will be performed to study the data: - Two sample t-test will be applicable.

2. Analyze the data to provide the hypothesis testing conclusion. What is the p-value for your test? What
is your recommendation for Par Inc.?

UNIVARIATE ANALYSIS
Mean for Current Ball data is: 270.275
Mean for New Ball data is: 267.50
SD for Current Ball data is: 8.752985
SD for New Ball data is: 9.896904
Variance for Current Ball data is: 76.61474
Variance for New Ball data is: 97.94872

SD for difference between New and Current: 13.74397

Summary of given Data

Univariate Analysis Conclusion

On analyzing summary of the given data shows mean and median are very close, and data is normally
distributed.

Also 5-point summary and standard deviations for both columns says that there is no significant
change in driving distance of new and current ball as mean and median are very close

Analysis using Data Visualization Technique

Data Visualization Analysis Conclusion

From histogram we can see that both variables are nearly normally distributed but `Current` variable is
left skewed a bit and `New` variable is completely right skewed."

Boxplot shows that there are no outliers present in given data

a) In this scenario, the p value is 0.188 which is greater than the 0.05.
b) Hence, we failed to reject the Null Hypothesis.
c) Thus, accepting the Null Hypothesis that there is no significant change in driving distances due
to the new coating.
3. Provide descriptive statistical summaries of the data for each model
For Current Ball:
mean=270.30
standard deviation=8.76
Variance= 76.68
Count=40

For New Ball:

mean=267.50
Standard deviation=9.90
Variance= 97.94
Count=40
4. What is the 95% confidence interval for the population mean of each model, and what is the 95%
confidence interval for the difference between the means of the two population?
Two Sample T-Test for both the available mean

One Sample T-Test for Current Mean

4|Page
One Sample T-Test for New Mean

T-Test Conclusion

d) Two Tailed Two Sample Independent T Test.

e) With 95% confidence interval for difference in mean is [-1.384937 to 6.934937]
5. Do you see a need for larger sample sizes and more testing with the golf balls? Discuss.
Power of Test when sample size is 40

To check sample size enough or not, we will check power of the test with sample size 40 and we found
that with sample size 40 power of test is 0.999951.
So, it can be concluded that there is no requirement of larger sample size
As per the given data and tests conducted using this data, it may be concluded that, statistically there
is no change in the distance of the ball with the new coating.
