CHAPTER 1
Introduction to agriculture
Agriculture refers to system that involve both growing crops and
livestock keeping. It may also regarded as a system with in inputs that have
been physical , cultural and economic and behavioural elements. Arable
refer to crowing crops , whether on an intensive scale ( e.g rice and market
gardening ) or on an extensive scale ( e.g grain farming on the Canadian
prones ). Arable farming usually takes place on the more favoured land
which is flalter and has higher quality soil. In farming there is livestock
farming and mixed farming. Livestock farming it comprises or consisted with
animals and usually takes place in areas less favourable to arable forming
( wetter , steeper , cold , higher ). This can beat an extensure scale ( e . g
dairy farming ). Mixed farming occurs when farmers grow to take place in
more developed counties where it is typical of farming in some parts of
farming Tanzania. In this agriculture as backbone in Tanzania the agency or
organization with agriculture in the wold is termed as food and agriculture
organization ( FAO ).

CHAPTER 2
AGRICULTURAL ACTIVIES IN TANZANIA
In Tanzania agricultural is our backbone because it is the most source of
income and it practice in many areas in Tanzanian. Some of agricultural
activities found in Tanzania it includes arable farming ( growing crops )
and livestock keeping ( Animal grazing ). Example of crops grown in
Tanzania include sisal production ( morogoro ) , coconut ( Zanzibar ) ,
Tomatoes ( morogoro ) , cotton ( kagera ) , clove ( Zanzibar ) , onion
( singida ).These are the some of crops grown in Tanzania and there
place where they can be found. In livestock in Tanzania and other tribe
that practices pastoralism include the Masai in Tanzania , Sukuma tribe
and less in makonde tribe. In this agriculture sector brought of
development , but they are challengesbthet we going to look in
following chapters.

CHAPTER 3
Arable farming
Arable farming mean growing crops. Crops production of food to
the animals and for human purpose e.g sell. In our country people
cultive different crops . There crops may be for food purpose or cash
crops. But in this we are going some or crops grown in Tanzania and
there importance together with characteristics of each crop: These crops
which we are going to look for each crops
Which are :-

Cassava
It is both food crops and cash crops.
It is planted with an underground root ( tuber ).
It is characterised as a highly effective producer of carbohydrates ,
mainly starch.
It can be found Mwanza , Mtawa , Lindi , Shinyanga , Tanga , Ruvuma ,
Mara , kigoma , the coastal regions and Zanzibar.

Coconuot
It is a food crops.
It is mostly grown in coastal areas e.g Zanzibar.
It is also helps in production or new products like oil.
It need much consideration in growing since it takes along time to produce
products or to grow.

Maize
It is the one among the most important food crops in Tanzania.
It comprises 45% of the cultivated areas.
In Tanzania , ranked among the top 25 maize production counties in the
world in the last two decodes.
It is cultivated in Dar es salam , Lindi , sinyanga wast and kigoma.
It is usually grown under low inputs rain condition.

CROPS PRODUCTION

Rice production
This is the production which it is used in high amount in our country. This
production it can used for selling production and domestic users. This is cultivated
in mbeya , Morogoro , Tanga , Dodoma and e.t.c.

Livestock keeping
This involves animals and usually take place in area less favourable to arable
farming. About 36% of farmers house hold are engaged in livestock
keeping , One percent as pure livestock farmers and 35% as crop livestock
mix farmers. Kenya as a subsector agricultural in Tanzania. It contribution
5.9% of the country crops domestic products. However it is important to
note that contribution of livestock is not limited to it's share in crop ( cross
domestic product ). Most of pastoralist are concentrated in northern plains
grazing areas where climate and soil condition does not favour other crop
production. Areas where pastoralism is practiced include Maasai,
Ngorongoro, Serengeti and other parts of Tanzania

Importance of agriculture
The agriculture sector in Tanzania is highly important since it
account for gross domestic product ( GDP ) , 20% of export 32
millions people ( equivalent to three forth of the eutire
population ) live in rural areas and 80% of them are involved in
agriculture sector in arable farming generally developed a crop
rotation system , which help to control specific weeds , pests and
diseases that are associated with particular crops. Provides
environmental benefit , such as improving the structure of the soil
by sowing pasture or increasing soil nitrogen levels by growing
legume crops.
