Marketing and adverting would be the perfect course for me, my dedication and passion

came when I was in secondary school and would stare at billboards wondering the process
behind them and how they used their knowledge to target their audience to encourage
people to purchase their product or service. I was particularly interested and intrigued
around Christmas time where companies would base their product or service around
Christmas and still being able to target to their audience and still incorporating themes and
decoration into the adverts, which also made me question how they manage to create
something new and improved every year, especially as Christmas adverts are very
competitive with other brands out there trying to produce the best Christmas advert every
year that everyone will remember.

I completed work experience with the British Airways content team at their waterside
building, where I was able to experience a professional environment. I was given the
challenge to come up with three destinations that I wanted to promote on the British
Airways website, thinking what would encourage customers to visit these destinations
therefore creating business and happy repeat customers. I was also given the chance to visit
the various sectors In British Airways including the production team who presented their
new visuals for the next month’s billboard. I was extremely fascinated in the process of
where the visual came from and how the process continued with getting consumers
feedback, their opinions and what they thought could be added to attract customers to the
brand. This encouraged me to peruse a degree in marketing and eventually being part of a
production team such as the one at British Airways.

I joined Henley college instead where I studied L2 IT for a year before joining L3 Creative
media production, whilst completing this course it has taught me many transferable skills
such as teamwork, by working with others it helped me to listen to other opinions and take
lead in certain projects, to finish productions on time. It has also taught me filming and
editing skills which I have been able to adapt and improve as productions went on, it has
also taught me the concept of idea generation which has helped me showcase my creativity
through my productions. By learning all these skills, I can take forward into the marketing
industry. For my final project I will be producing a marketing and advertising campaign for a
brand of my choice. As part of one of my previous assignments in college I was asked to
create a Christmas advert to promote a brand or product, I decided to promote the brand
“Coca-Cola” as the slogan for the brand is “share happiness” and people would share the
drink with others over Christmas. This taught me skills such as ‘cutting to the beat’ of the
music to attract the audience to the narrative of the advert, it also taught me to become
more organised in keeping all my work up to date so that I didn’t fall behind.

Outside of college I have a part time job at Apple as a specialist, alongside I work at a
clothing company called Gant, by having a job in retail it has helped me with giving good
customer service and having good communication skills, it has also helped me in working
with a big team such as Apple, having others opinions, it has also helped me with time
management in making sure I arrive at work on time. It has also helped me in having
responsibilities in both jobs and making sure I carry out my responsibilities in a professional
way.
I would relish the opportunity to deepen my knowledge in the area and believe that by
going to university and accomplishing a degree in marketing it will help me achieve my goals
of becoming part of a successful production team.
