SCHOOL PROFILE OF BECURAN HIGH SCHOOL

Introduction

Education develops the people’s minds to a particular level and builds unity while

removing all conflict in the society. It makes us able to become a good learner and

understand every aspect of life. Furthermore, education plays a vital role in everyone’s

life, it also boost the confidence and help to build the personality of an individual. It gives

power to analyze the human rights, social rights, duties and responsibilities towards the

country. However, education can be classified in three (3) types: Formal education,

Informal education and Non-formal education. Formal education is commonly organized

as full time education and it is organized as a dynamic process with defined stages.

Formal education covers primary, lower and upper secondary education, higher and

university education (Sama and Weller, 2016).

According to Gelpi et al. (2019), education is a discipline that deals with the way

of teaching and learning in school as opposed to non-formal and informal means

of socialization. It is made to guide the individual in acquiring knowledge to their culture,

to develop their behavior in the ways of adulthood, and teaching them to their ultimate

roles in society. Education can be defined as the transmission of the values and gathered

knowledge of a society. Therefore, it is equivalent to socialization and enculturation.

Becuran High School was founded in the year 1960’s when some civic-minded

people of Becuran like Atty. HonorioLapid, Vicente Bacani Sr., Arsenio Manalo,

Venancio Payumo, Esteban Bacani, and Santiago Sarmiento put their heads together for a

noble purpose. It is located in Sta. Rita, Pampanga wherein the thought of putting up a

Junior High School – a high school which will give the schoolers an opportunity of easy

access to formal education was taken into accounts. The permission to operate the school

was granted by Secretary Carlos P. Romulo on June 27, 1966 and since then it is known

as one of the top performing schools around the area.

This action research has been developed to raise awareness in terms of the

school’s profile that can be a basis of performance and information on what setting of

education the Philippines has.

This study aims to determine the profile of Becuran High School. Specifically, the

study sought answers to the following questions: Specifically, it sought to answer the

following: (1) What is Becuran High School’s enrollment profile in terms of gender in the

AY 2019-2020? (2) What is the schools enrollment profile over of the course of three

consecutive school years? (3) What is the school’s data in terms of the performance

indicators?

Method

This study is an action research in nature as it is the process in which participants

examine their own educational practice systematically and carefully, using the techniques

of research. This research is carried out within the context of the teacher’s environment—

that is, with the students and at the school in which the teacher works—on questions that

deal with educational matters at hand (Ferrance,2000).

This action research explored the school’s profile through the data gathered from

the participants of this study who are mainly the students of Becuran High School. The

students ranging from Junior to Senior High School from the course of a four-academic

grade enrollees.
The researchers sought permission to the prospect school specifically, to the

school principal to gain access on the information of data collection and interpretation.

The researchers then started to brainstorm for the research problems in line with the

purpose of the study. Consequently, having the enough information and data, the

researchers have begun interpreting the given data using descriptive statistics and

presented them on a graph and figures for a much clearer understanding that sought to

answer the research questions. Finally, with the summary of the results, conclusions and

recommendations were derived.

The data were analyze based on the objective of the study using descriptive

statistics which according to Trochim (2006), it is used to describe the basic features of

the data in a study. They provide simple summaries about the sample and the measures.

Together with simple graphics analysis, they form the basis of virtually every quantitative

analysis of data.

Discussion

Figure 1 shows the enrollment data of male and female students for each grade

level in the AY 2019-2020. In the figure, Grade 8 has the record of highest male students

compared to the female students and to other grade levels. On the contrary, different

results were shown to those of Grade 9’s wherein it garnered a higher population of

female students than male.

For Grades 7 and 8, the number of male students was relatively close to the

number of female students. Hence, in AY 2019-2020, there were a greater number of

female students compare to the male students of Becuran High School. The implication

of this result lies in connection with the article by Vazquez-Cano et al. (2017) entitled

“Differences in basic digital competences between male and female university students of

social sciences in Spain” as it analyses the differences in basic digital competencies of

male and female university students on social education. It was observed from the result

that the female students opted for personal sessions with tutors in greater numbers than

the male students did. Furthermore, there is evidence that the men have greater perceived

competence in developing “online presentations” than women do.

7

Figure 2 presents that the enrollment data for past three years is not constant. For

Grade 7, there was a slump of enrollees recorded for the past three (3) years. However,

Grade 8 students of Becuran High School has an increase record in the SY 2017-2018

and fell in 2018-2019.

Relatively, Grades 9 and 10 enrollees for the past three years has a positive record

which is increasing in nature especially in the school year 2018-2019.

According to Jensen (2013) on her article entitled “Fluctuating enrollment numbers

explained”, she asserts that over the last few years, class numbers have fluctuated

significantly and one of the main factors is the increased level of competition from other

schools.
Figure 3 illustrates the Performance indicators of Becuran High School for the

past three (3) years from the academic years of 2016-2019. In the figure, it was observed

that the participation rate, cohort survival rate and repetition rate increased for the past

three academic years. However, the drop-out rate and promotion rate has a decreasing

percentage. For the retention, completion and promotion rates, the percentage is varied in

the past three (3) years but shows a decreased percentage compared to the AY 2016-2017

to AY 2018-2019.
According to Smith et al. (1995), interest in performance indicators has grown

considerably. It is considered to be a number by means of which the quality of the

functioning of an institution or a system can serve various functions.

Summary

The purpose of this study is to know the school profile of Becuran High

School over the course of three academic years ranging from 2016 up to the present.

The study is an action research in nature. Since the study only focuses on

school profiling, there were no respondents involved instead, the statistics and
8
SCHOOL PROFILE OF BECURAN HIGH SCHOOL

information of the school were used for the analysis and interpretation of the given

data.

The researchers chose Becuran High School in Sta. Rita, Pampanga as the

target institution where the school profiling is apt due to its large population.

Descriptive statistics was used as the treatment or tool for this study.

Conclusion

Based on the findings of the study, the following conclusions are drawn:
1. Grade 8 has the highest male student enrollees compared to female and

interestingly, this is a total opposite for Grade 9 in A.Y 2019-2020.

2. A fluctuating record for enrollment over the past three years was

observed in the profiling.

3. Based on the analyzed data, there was an increase of enrolment record

especially in the school year 2018-2019.

4. Evidently, participation, cohort-survival and repetition rates had a

significant increased for the past three years.

5. Drop-out and promotion rates had a decrease in percentage over the last

three years.
Recommendation

Based on the results of the study, the researchers recommend the following:

1. For the future researchers, this study only focused on the school profiling of BHS

hence, this paper may serve as a source for a further elaboration on details.
2. The researchers suggest that the school management may take a look at the data

presented on the charts as a basis for a much comprehensive view of the

enrollment record.
3. Similar with the first one, an in-depth investigation on different variables in line

with the results is much recommended for reliable findings.
