2020 Hope Middle School Math Fair

January 6, 2020

Dear Parents,

Your child will be participating in the 2020 Hope Middle School Math Fair. Each student may choose to work alone or
with a partner. Your child has been provided with a project outline sheet, a grading rubric for the oral and written
reports, and a sheet explaining the judges’ expectations. This project will be recorded as a test score for the third
marking period.

Most of the work for this project will be done at home. Students will have due dates for certain parts of the project. See
the table below for due dates.

Students will have a chance to research in class. Have your child think of outside interests where they can incorporate
math. Math is everywhere so help them brainstorm.

Thank you for your continuing support,

Mrs. Stephanie McLean & Mrs. Megan Walters

Using websites, your own ideas, or interests, find a theme or
topic for your project.
January 14th
Now that you have chosen a topic, what mathematical concepts
will you be investigating or trying to prove?

Rough Draft of research & procedures

Now that you know your topic, have a question you are trying

to answer, it is time to research! Find out as much as you can
about this topic. Be sure to write down resource information
for your bibliography!

Rough Draft of experiment, data, and conclusions

Now it is time to answer your question. Using mathematical

equations, problems, steps, etc. do your “experiment.” Be sure February 11th
to record results-this step may be as simple as listing formulas,
graphing or plotting information or you might actually have to
do an experiment.

Final paper and board

This portion of your project is when you type your origin of

idea, outline of development (procedures), discussion of
mathematical concepts used, chart your findings with graphs or
charts, and conclude about your research. Be sure to also
include pictures, resources (listed in a bibliography), and actual

experiment if need be. Use a 3 x 5 index card for: your name(s),
grade, category, teacher name, school, school system, city and
county.

Now you are ready to put your eye-catching, dazzling project

together on your tri-fold board.
