Relationship between amplitude and tuning fork height in a sound board.

Topic: Waves.
Background information:
For the following investigation it is necessary to acquire some previous information, in
order to fluffily understand the sound wave behavior that will be produced for achieved
the objectives in these exploration. So for these it is necessary to review the terms of
waves and the type of wave the study will be on, amplitude and acoustic resonance.
The basic concept to understand first is waves, which can be described as “the
propagation of energy from one location to another one” (Physics Classroom, 2015),
however, as the sound will be the main factor of study, the exploration will be focused
in the mechanical wave type which are “not capable of transmitting its energy through
a vacuum, but instead they need a medium for its construction” (Physics Classroom,
2015).
Moreover, during the process of propagation it can be identified
some wave properties, in which from its displacement can be
seen the variation of position (meters) or time (seconds). From
which can be appreciate the wavelength (λ) “that defines the
separation in space between oscillations” (Pain, 1968); period
(T) that is “the time that the waves take in make one fully
oscillation” (Pain, 1968); and amplitude (a) “that is the maximum
point the wave reaches in its displacement, from its equilibrium
position” (Pain, 1968), which shows an importance in sound since it is a property that
lets to know the loudness in it.
Furthermore, for start talking about the acoustic resonance. Resonance is when a body
that is vibrating at the natural frequency of a second one, forces this second one to
vibrate (Chesnutt, 2016). Having these in mind, in the case of the experiment, the
vibration will be produced by the collision between one iron bar and the turning fork,
which will be located in a sound board that will means the medium of propagation of
the sound.
Research question:
How the variation of the height in a turning fork does affects the amplitude produce by
the disturbance of the collision between it and an iron bar?
Objective:
To find a relationship between the amplitude and the height of a turning fork, in order to
understand the behavior of the sound and its quality, propagated in the sound board.
Variables:
Independent variable: Amplitude (meters).
Dependent variable: Turning fork height.
Controlled variables: The medium of propagation, in which includes material (wood)
and shaped (cube); the material of the turning fork, stainless steel; object use to
produce the disturbance, iron bar; recording apparatus, an oscilloscope.

Materials:

Turning Forks (4) Sound board

Iron bar
Oscilloscope

Procedure:
1. Put the turning fork in the sound board.
2. With the iron bar, hit the turning fork to create a disturbance of sound
3. Measure with the oscilloscope the wave created by the sound
4. Repeat these 4-5 times with the same turning fork
5. Changing the height in the turning fork, exchange the size by putting a larger
one in the sound board and repeat the same procedure.
