CELTA

Live Observations
Introduction

As part of your CELTA course, you are required to observe a total of six hours of
classes conducted by experienced teachers (i.e. not including other trainees). A
maximum of three hours can be DVD observations; two hours of these are
integrated into the course schedule. The schedule also includes a one-hour
demonstration lesson given by a tutor; this counts towards your total. If you miss
any of these sessions, you will need to make up the time with a DVD observation; it
is your responsibility to email Rob to arrange this.

For the remaining three hours of lesson observations, you need to schedule a visit to
the school to observe one three-hour class with Shane Global Languages (in the
same building). The best time for this is around the middle of the CELTA course;
please don’t leave it until the last week. Because of Saxoncourt Teacher Training,
Shane Global classes are very frequently observed, so it is essential that you keep
the impact of your presence to a minimum.

Instructions

Send an email to AcademicDirector@shaneglobal.com, requesting a date for an

observation. You can request a morning (9:15-12:30) or afternoon on any weekday,
excluding Wednesday mornings. You must request an appointment at least two days
in advance; if you simply show up you will not be allowed to observe a class. You
can also request a particular level, but it may not be possible to arrange for you to
observe the level you want.

On the date confirmed for your observation, you must be waiting outside the
classroom five minutes before the start time with your portfolio; it is absolutely
imperative that you arrive on time, so you should aim to be at the school half an
hour early, and collect your portfolio from the box then. Please sit where the teacher
indicates (usually in a corner or close to the door). During the lesson, you should
make notes; you should not participate in any way (unless the teacher invites you to
do so) and you must not whisper while the teacher is talking, send text messages,
or do anything likely to disrupt the lesson in any way. Please be aware that the
small class sizes at Shane Global make any distracting behaviour instantly obvious
to everyone present.

There is a break during the 3-hour lesson; apart from this you must remain in the
class until it ends at 12:30. At 12:30, ask the teacher to sign your observation
record in your CELTA 5 (blue book). Your attendance, punctuality and
professionalism in this observation will be noted and, if necessary,
commented on in your course report.

It is your responsibility to ensure that you complete your observations before 4 th July
2015. Please contact Rob if you have any difficulties or questions.
