http://www.barntoolbox.com/ (about types and information)

My husband and I just built a barn. It has a loft, some with solid floor
and some with open grid floor for hay storage. It's a pole barn type,
my husband designed it himself. Not real fancy but will fit our needs,
livestock and room for an office / vet area, which we have not finished
that part yet. It's all wood - 6x6 posts in cement, with pre-
fabricated siding material that we have to paint. There is a metal
over plywood roof. The building is 24 x 40 and has a stairway on the
outside going up to the loft. The metal roof alone cost about $2,000.
We also got a good deal on the posts and lumber by buying it all at
once and combining with neighbors to get an entire truckload from
Tennessee. We built the entire barn ourselves with very little outside
help and the only heavy equipment we used was a rented man lift to
put the siding on the upper level. We hired some locals with
a bobcat to spread around 3 truckloads of gravel on the inside and
around the outside edge. We still have to wire it up. But I would say
the 20,000 price is probably very close to what we spent on materials
alone. Now you can put a metal roof on without the plywood and
paper.... you can not put the hurricane brackets on the crossbeams for
the roof like we did and you don't have to tie the whole thing together
with large bolts and Barn Screws. I'm sure we over did it on a few
things... but this barn won't be blowing over or leaning sideways in a
few years, that is for sure !!!
