“Did you enjoy our game? Okay class, what have

you noticed in our activity?”

“Very good!”

“Another.”

“Very well said! So class, our topic for today is all

about Adjective Complement.”

“But before we go on to what an adjective

complement is, let’s have a brief discussion of
what an adjective is.”

“Anyone who knows what is the meaning of an “Adjective is a word that describes a noun or pronoun.”
adjective?”

“Nice answer!”

“An adjective is a word that modifies a noun or

pronoun. It gives additional information about
what the noun or the pronoun refers to. It usually
comes right before the noun or pronoun which it
modifies.”

Examples:

 bright sun
 blue sky
 rotten egg
 red car
 big apple
 crying lady
 beautiful woman
 crumpled paper
 dark room
 red rose

1. She wore a beautiful gown.

2. The cacao she bought tastes sweet.

“Kindly gave other examples.”

“Do you understand what a sentence is?” ”Yes, Ma’am!”
“So if an adjective modifies a noun or pronoun, “An adjective complement modifies an adjective.”
what is the function of adjective complement?”

“Very well said!”

“An adjective complement is a clause or phrase

that modifies an adjective. It follows the adjective
in the sentence and offers more information about
it.”
“For example:

1. Cazzie is eager to know your interests.

“The underlined word is considered as an

adjective because it modifies the noun which is
Cazzie. The encircled words are called adjective
complement because it modifies the adjective
which is eager.”

2. Alyana is excited that Cardo is going home.

“The underlined word is considered as an

adjective because it modifies the noun which is
Alyana. The encircled words are called adjective
complement because it modifies the adjective
which is excited.”

“Do you understand?”

“Give an example of adjective complement in a

sentence.”

“Since adjective complements complete the

meaning of an adjective, there are many “Yes ma’am!”
everyday examples. There are three types of
adjective complement, the noun clause,
prepositional phrase and infinitive phrase. Let’s
start with noun clauses.”

“Noun clauses are group of words that act as a

noun. Just like a sentence, it contains a subject
and a verb. It can be used to complement a
subject or an adjective. Since they are clauses,
they don’t form complete sentences. Rather, they
are dependent clauses and do not express a
complete thought. Noun clauses usually begins
with that, which, who, whom, whose, when,
where or whether.”

Examples:

1. It was very obvious that she wore make up.

2. Daniella is undecided when it comes to
choosing suitcase for her flight.

“Give an example of adjective complement that

function as a noun clause.”

“Very good!”
“Do you understand?”

“Let’s move forward to another type of adjective

complement which is prepositional phrase.”

“Prepositional phrases consist of a preposition

and the object of the preposition, for example,
"…in Ireland." Here, "in" is a preposition and
"Ireland" is the object of the preposition, or what
the preposition is referring to.”
“Common prepositions include: about, at, by, for,
in, of, to, with.” “Yes, Ma’am!”

Examples:
1. He is interested in designing video games.
2. Geoffrey is afraid of spiders and snakes.
3. I am addicted to ice cream.

“Kindly give an example of adjective complement

that functions as a prepositional phrase.”
.
“Do you understand the adjective complement
that functions as a prepositional phrase?”

“Let’s advance to the last type which is infinitive

phrase.”

“Infinitive phrases are formed from full infinitive

verbs (to + the base form of the verb) plus any
additional objects or modifiers of the verb. (Be
careful not to confuse infinitive phrases with
prepositional phrases beginning with to.)”

Examples:

1. I’m very happy to know you! (To know you is

the complement of the adjective happy.)
2. We’re just glad to be of service.” (To be of
service is the complement of the adjective glad.)
3. They felt relieved to return home.” (To return
home is the complement of the adjective

begin is the complement of the adjective

that acts as an infinitive phrase.”
