Predicting the outcome
When you create a program, or part of a program, you should dry-run it to see if it will Key term

3 Networks for a purpose

Activity 5
Write a letter to Dinesh, describing two management tasks that he will need to
perform on the network.

Activity 6
Edit your letter from Activity 5.
Add a paragraph to tell Dinesh why it is important he considers the security of his
network.
Tell Dinesh what he needs to do to help keep his network secure.

Challenge
All the networks shown so far have been star networks. This is the network topology. The
connecting device (hub, switch or router) is central with all devices connected to it.
Key terms
Star topology:
a network where
all computers
connect to a central
component.
Mesh topology: a
network where all
computers connect
to each other.

There are other topologies that can include switches, but don’t always. Here are two
other topologies:
1 A mesh network topology tries to connect devices to as many other devices as it can.
