1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Development
The Gunflint Field is located in Mississippi Canyon Block 948, in approximately 6,100’ water depth.
The Gunflint reservoir is in a Middle/Lower Miocene formation and is expected to produce high GOR
oil, with shut-in tubing pressure of approximately 12,620-psia. Evaluation of the initial appraisal wells
indicated two likely development options: subsea tieback to an existing host, or subsea production to
a new-build local host. The tieback option was eventually selected. The Tieback is envisioned as a
dual flowline loop allowing for round-trip pigging and dead-oil circulation. Hydrocarbons from wells
MC 948#4 and MC 948#2 will be routed through two 8” flowlines to Williams’ Gulfstar 1 Spar (MC
724).

1.3 Definitions
Term Definition
Action to Secure Action performed to prevent hydrate formation in the subsea system by dry oiling the
flowlines or by treating with methanol (bullheading into wellbore or injection into flowline
jumper)
Arrival Temperature Flowing temperature of the fluids at the boarding facility
Bubble Point The temperature and pressure at which the first bubble of gas forms from the crude oil or
condensate
Chilly Choke The term used to describe excessive cooling when starting up a well into a pipeline under
low pressure. For a period of time, the piping downstream of the choke may dip below the
design temperature of the metal until the well warms up.
Cloud Point The temperature at which a liquid (as petroleum oil) begins to cloud (as from separation of
wax on cooling).
Cooldown Time The minimum preservation temperature for a shutdown before the appearance of hydrates.
Expressed in the number of hours before the hydrate mitigation operations needs to be
completed (e.g., dead oiling, blowdown).
Hydrate Dissociation The pressure at a corresponding temperature of the hydrate curve, below which hydrates
Pressure (HDP) will not form.
Hydrate Dissociation The temperature at a corresponding pressure on the hydrate curve, above which hydrates
Temperature (HDT) will not form.
Inhibited Production Live production fluids which have been treated with methanol or LDHI (low dosage hydrate
inhibitor) so that any produced or condensed water in the flowline, tree, or wellbore will not
form hydrates at ambient conditions and system pressures.
No-Touch Time The period of time following a shut-in, in which the equipment is allowed to cool without the
need for operator intervention. Note that within the no-touch time, the equipment may be
restarted without requiring any hydrate mitigation operations (e.g., methanol injection,
blowdown).
Pour Point With continued cooling, this is the temperature at which the liquid petroleum turns to gel.

• Downhole injection (3): Continuous asphaltene inhibitor and corrosion/scale inhibitor (pre-
mixed cocktail) are planned deep (through CID2 and CID3), with continuous LDHI injected
above the SCSSV (through CID1)
• Subsea tree injection (3): Two methanol injection points (CIT1, between PMV/PWV, and
CIT2, upstream of FIV) are provided. Paraffin inhibitor injection is provided via CIT3 as needed.
3.10.1 Methanol Injection System
Hydrate inhibition with methanol is selected for protecting isolated parts of the subsea production
system (tree and well jumper). Methanol will be required for batch treatment during the following
operations:
• In special cases (for example during hydrate remediation or treatment of dead legs)
3.10.2 Low Dosage Hydrate Inhibitor (LDHI) Injection System
• LDHI is planned for downhole continuous injection above the SCSSV for continuous hydrate
mitigation.
3.10.3 Corrosion/Scale Inhibitor Injection System
• Corrosion/Scale is injected continuously downhole.
• Corrosion inhibitor is injected to control the interior corrosion of the metal surface from the well
to the riser.
• Scale inhibitor (if required, based on water production and chemistry) is injected to prevent
deposition of inorganic scales (calcium carbonates, barium sulfate etc.) within the well and/or
the subsea production system.
3.10.4 Asphaltene Inhibitor Injection System
• Asphaltene inhibitor downhole is continuously injected close to the reservoir perforation zone
(just above the production packer).
3.10.5 Paraffin Inhibitor
• Continuous injection of paraffin inhibitor is not planned, however as a contingency and if
needed; paraffin inhibitor can be injected downstream of the FIV through CIT3.

4.3.1 Pigging
Flowlines, Flowline jumpers, risers, and ILS/PLETs are designed for operational pigging. Pigging will
not be required for the well jumpers.
All flowlines are designed to accommodate maintenance and inspection pigging. Flowline sections in
the pigging route will preclude sudden inside diameter (ID) changes. When a change in diameter is
required, a taper of 1:6 or shallower will be provided on the diameter. Thus, at least six length units in
the axial pipe direction will be provided for one length unit of diameter change.
4.3.2 Blowdown
Flow Assurance analysis shows, post blowdown pressures at the deepest point in subsea flowline will
range between 250-400 psi. For the corresponding seabed temperatures of 40 °F, the fluid remains in
hydrate forming zone.
Blowdown cannot be used as an effective hydrate mitigation strategy due to the resulting pressure at
the wellhead location (deepest points in the system) not being outside of the hydrate formation
temperature. However, blowdown can be carried out to buy out additional time (34 hours to 50 hours)
in case hot oil circulation is not possible.

5.5.1 Valve
When timer is expired, MCS initiates a valve closure command to the corresponding valve listed in
this column.
5.5.2 Timer
Timers are used for different alarm scenarios to initiate valve closure. If the shutdown signal is
cleared prior to completion of the shutdown sequence, the sequence is to terminate until the
Underwater Safety Valve 1 (USV1) and Alternate Isolation Valve (AIV) are in the close position. Then,
Timers are reset. This method ensures the well is shut-in and in a safe state before restart for
production.
HMI Valve Open command on subsea valves are inhibited while a shutdown signal is active.

7.1.1 Philosophy
In the early life of production, both the wells MC 948#4 and MC 948#2 will be flowing through a
dedicated flowline and riser as shown in Figure 7-1. The production through MC 948#4 and MC
948#2 will reduce drastically during mid and late life of the field. Fluids from both the wells will be
commingled in late life of field as shown in Figure 7-2 to minimize the likelihood of slugging and to
reduce wax formation risk (Ref [5]).
7.1.3 Turndown
Turndown rates are recognized when producing subsea field pairs with operating challenges such as
slugging, lower arrival temperatures, thus, hydrate, and wax issues etc. The gunflint system shows
likelihood of slugging issues when individual well flowrates drop below ~9,000 STBPD. The limiting
flowrate at which the slugging will be predominant is based on the arrival pressure of 650 psig. At
higher arrival pressure, system can be operated for much lower flowrates without slugging tendencies
(Ref [5]).

During normal production operations, downhole, subsea and topsides pressure and temperature
information verifies that the system is performing properly. It monitors and alarms for abnormal
conditions, also data monitoring, and interpolation, which reduce hydrate formation risk in the subsea
system.
Pressure and temperature gauges monitor the production flow stream at various subsea locations as
follows:
• Downhole – Gunflint production wells are equipped with permanent downhole pressure and
temperature gauges located just above the perforations. By having downhole gauges, a continual
measurement of downhole pressure and temperature will be made without rig intervention and
interruption of production. The gauges will be used to conduct conventional pressure transient
test, interference and static test. The downhole sensors will also enable a wellbore and network
flowline model to run real time.
• Production Tree - subsea pressure and temperature sensors are located as follows:
o Dual-pressure and dual-temperature gauges, UPT1/UPT2 located between the PMV and
PWV monitors the flowing wellhead temperature and pressure on the tree
o Dual-pressure and dual-temperature gauges, DPT1/DPT2, located downstream of the
production choke valve monitors flowing conditions in the well jumper
o Dual-pressure and dual-temperature gauges APT1/APT2, located between the AMV and
AWV, monitors annulus pressure and temperature
o Dual-pressure and dual-temperature gauges FPT1/FPT2, located downstream of FIV. These
gauges will be used to monitor the pressure and temperature at the PLETs during short term
and extended shutdowns. During system startup, the operator will be able to confirm the
production flowline pressures to establish pressure communication with the subsea system.
In addition to the pressure and temperature sensors on the trees, there is a choke position indicator
(CPI) that is located on each production choke.
At the host platform, the arrival temperature and pressure will be monitored to assure operation
above both the hydrate and wax appearance points.

Four alarm settings can be programmed at the MCS for each subsea sensor; they are:
• High – Low
Pressure alarm(s) will be set and maintained for downhole pressure to monitor drawdown.
Pressure alarm(s) will be set and maintained to monitor for annulus pressure increase or decreases
from the last diagnostic test.
If failure of the Annulus Pressure Transmitter (APT) is encountered, engineering approval is required
for an acceptable duration between annulus pressure checks. These checks should be performed
according to the approved schedule.
The XOVP and XOVA remain closed except when performing these checks.
