A call was made by a Boss to his Secretary.

Boss (sender): Please insert in my schedule for next week, November 27, a meeting with the
board of directors in regards to the proposed new investment by the finance department.
Secretary (receiver): Alright, noted sir. I’ve already inserted it in your schedule.
Boss: Thanks.

4.2 Short composition of not less than two hundred words about the noise and pollution in a
crowded urban area

Living in an urban areas had always been the dream of many since it provides a lot of
opportunities in regards to career. The urban areas have a lot of things, especially advanced
technology, which makes people from rural areas yearn for it. However, the more advanced a
community becomes, the more it brings in all kinds of people, good or bad. Those bad people do
not care for anything other than themselves. These kind of people throws trashes everywhere
without caring for the consequences. The others do not bother calling them out for it. To make
things worse, the others also imitate these kinds of behavior because it was not being labeled as
wrong and they see that those bad people are getting away from it. Hence, the noise and
pollution in the crowded urban areas kept getting worse. In order to solve this, the people who
throws trashes irresponsibly everywhere must be called out, shamed and penalized. Human
beings are social creatures. When they see that the society does not tolerate it, they will change
their ways and follow what everyone is doing. Through this way, the noise and pollution in
crowded urban areas may be lessened and solved.

Part II.
1.
Topic 1. A man or woman you know quite well.

My Law Professor
Atty. John is one of the most excellent professors of law in my school. His height is
average, probably around 5’7-5’9ft. tall but his presence in the class room more than his height
not just because he is a professor, because not all of my lawyer professors could really make a
class instantaneously quiet when he enters the room. He often makes jokes in the class but when
he gets upset on the recitation of a student, his face will frown and all of a sudden, he will shout
and scare everyone in class who were really tired because it is a 6:30-9:30pm class. However,
whenever I meet him outside of the classroom and greets him, he greets back with a smile.

Topic 2. A place you know well.

Coffee shop near my dorm

The coffee shop near my dorm is a Starbucks located in a mall. The mall is small and there
is not a lot of shops open there so a few people only goes there. However, the Starbucks occupied
a relatively large portion of the mall in comparison to the other opened shops. It is quite spacious
inside since it does not place a lot of chairs and tables like in a restaurant. The tables and chairs
and the couches were placed a few feet away from each other, which makes the people who
drink coffee there enjoy their own world without being disturbed much by others. In addition,
there are really only few people who goes there, especially Filipinos. The customers who typically
goes there are Chinese and Koreans who does not really spend a long time in the coffee shop.
This is clearly a haven for students like me who spend a lot of time in coffee shops to study.

The Banaue Rice Terraces

A view on the Banaue Rice Terraces is a definite stop whenever tourists go to Baguio or
Sagada. It is a huge rice terraces carved on the mountains of Ifugao. It is said that if all the steps
were laid flat, it would encircle half of the globe. The Banaue Rice Terraces became one of the
wonders of the world because of its genius irrigation system that sustains the rice terraces was
estimated to be over 2000 years old. Tourists were led to a spot in the mountain that has
complete view of the rice terraces from a top place. Tourists can only walk on the edge of 5-10
terraces from there since there would be a cliff. From the viewing spot, though you cannot see a
lot of houses, it is said that a portion of it has houses built on it by farmers. It is still a good place
to visit on tour.

2.
a. Explain how expository writing is used by short story writers, biographers, and historians.
Expository writing is used by short story writers, biographers, and historians in order to
give color to their article or novel. Otherwise, it would feel that the writing is too dull and would
fail to convey what it really wants to convey with its readers because the article did not allow the
readers to picture what was being narrated on without description of anything in such article.

b. In what way or ways expository writing be used in a diary?

Expository writing can be used in describing the events, things, persons or places that
would be mentioned in the diary that the person writing it experienced, met or saw.

c. May a personal letter offer opportunities for expository writing? Explain.

Yes. Personal letters allows the writer to express himself more unlike a report which only
requires a concise and brief statement of something.

MODULE 3

I.
A. Extended definition of either key or mystery

A key has a lot of definition that could be used in different circumstances. First, it is a
piece of metal that has been cut into a special shape and is used for opening or closing a lock,
starting a car engine, etc. Second, it could mean any of the set of movable parts that you press
with your fingers on a computer or other machine to produce letters, numbers, or symbols, or
on a musical instrument to produce sound. Third, it also means the most important part of
achieving something or explaining a situation. Fourth, a set of musical notes based on one
particular note. And lastly, a list of the symbols used in a map or book with explanations of what
they mean. (Cambridge Dictionary)

B. Write a paragraph on either laissez-faire or caveat emptor

Caveat emptor is a Latin term that means "let the buyer beware.". The rule of caveat
emptor requires the purchaser to be aware of the supposed title of the vendor and one who buys
without checking the vendor’s title takes all the risks and losses consequent to such failure

In law, it is a recognized principle that a person dealing on a registered land need not go
beyond its certificate of title. It is also a firmly settled rule that where there are circumstances
which would put a party on guard and prompt him to investigate or inspect the property being
sold to him (such as the presence of occupants/tenants thereon) to inquire first into the status
or nature of possession of the occupants.
C. How Camera Works

A camera lens collects and focuses the light. Film is made up of light sensitive materials.
When those materials are hit with light from the lens, they captured the shape of the objects and
details like how much light is coming off of them. In the dark room, the film that was exposed to
the light is again put in a series of chemical baths to eventually create the image.

In the case of digital camera, its sensor more closely resembles a solar panel than a strip
of film. Each sensor is divided up into millions of red, green and blue pixels (i.e. megapixels).
When light hits the pixel, the sensor converts it into energy and a computer built inside of the
camera reads just how much energy is being produced.

Measuring how much energy each pixel has allows the sensor to determine what areas of
the image are light and dark. And since each pixel has a color value, the camera’s computer is
able to estimate the colors in the scene by looking at what other nearby pixels registered. Putting
the information from all the pixels together, the computer is able to approximate the shapes and
colors in the scene.

If each pixel is gathering light information, then camera sensors with more megapixels are
able to capture more detail. However, the size of the sensor is also important. Larger sensors will
gather more light, making them better performers for low light scenes. Packing lots of megapixels
into a small sensor actually makes the image quality worse, because those individual pixels are
too small.

D. Paragraph using analogy

When the students found out that they failed the subjects that they found easy during
the semester is like pouring cold water in their hearts. They felt betrayed. Moreover, they felt
like they were slapped in the face because the professor was really kind and fun during the class.
The attorney-professor looks like a papa bear. They thought that this kind professor would pass
them all, if not, a majority of them, not only 5 out of 40 students.

E. Paragraph on a subject using cause and effect

Letting alcohol take control over your life has many negative effects on a person and the
people around them. One important effect is the damage you can do to your body. Drinking can
lead to severe illness and even eventual death; some health consequences to consider might be
liver disease, kidney failure and, for pregnant women, the loss of their unborn child. Another
detriment is that an addiction could lead to drinking and driving; possibly causing a fatal car
accident for either yourself and/or an innocent by stander. And lastly, another concern to
consider is the relationships alcohol can destroy. Alcohol abuse can have very serious affect on a
person’s temperament, which can lead to domestic abuse. The negative effects of alcohol abuse
are overwhelming when considering the many consequences that drinkers and the people
around them have to deal with.

Module 4

Part II.
I. Q&A

1. The one advantage I enjoyed from the Dewey Decimal Classification System is the
efficiency it gave to me whenever I would like to look for a book from the library.
Because of this system, I was able to find books, which title and author I do not know
but only the fact that I need to read something from a certain topic.

2. The Housing Characteristics shall be used to classify the population of the Philippines
by age brackets. The Philippine Statistics Authority is the government agency that
should have this information.

3. An extended definition is a one or more paragraphs that attempt to explain a

complex term.

Degree is a unit of measurement. It describes the level, intensity or seriousness of

something. In education, it is an award conferred by a college or university signifying
that the recipient has satisfactorily completed a course of study

Law is the system of rules which a particular country or community recognizes as

regulating the actions of its members and which it may enforce by the imposition of
penalties.

A culture is a way of life of a group of people--the behaviors, beliefs, values, and

symbols that they accept, generally without thinking about them, and that are
passed along by communication and imitation from one generation to the next.

II. Write a paragraph

1. Student Restlessness
A typical student always hates going to school. This is because the school
forces the kids to sit in a class and behave properly. It is a normal behavior for
children to have a lot of energy and this energy that the students were not able to
release through physical activities outside the classroom, oozes out from them,
which in turn, could make them look restless.

2. Comparison between two places

Comparison between two places should be made when you have a deep
understanding of the similarities and differences of each of the places. Deep
understanding does not necessarily mean that you had spent a considerable
amount of time in each place. It is sufficient that you were able to appreciate the
place on your own and have an opinion about it.

3. Democracy and Communism

Democracy is a government by the people. The individual rights of the
people are given precedence, especially the people’s right to free speech, which
was considered by the Supreme Court, as the most important right of the people
from a democratic government. Unlike in Communism, freedom of speech is not
tolerated because it will only lead to diversity, the complete opposite of the goal
of Communism, which is unity.

4. Saying
What we permit, we promote. This saying tells us that whenever a wrong
was committed against us, we should try to correct it or at least do something
about it. If we don’t, it will become a sign for others to do the same thing against
us. We should learn to speak up and make a change because tolerance would not
help us grow as a person.

5. Double Jeopardy
The right against double jeopardy is a procedural defense that prevents an
accused person from being tried again on the same charges following a valid
acquittal or conviction. The fundamental principle from Double Jeopardy is that
the State should not be able to oppress individuals through the abuse of the
criminal process because after the accused had been acquitted, the Constitution
conclusively presumes that the accused is innocent and the second trial is
considered unfair.

III. Brief Summary of an Essay

The Fall of Bataan is an essay written by a Filipino soldier who fought during the World War
II, when the Japanese attacked the Philippines. He expressed deep outrage from the betrayal he
felt during the war because of the deaths of his fellow soldiers who had a bright future ahead
from them but were killed from a war that should not have been a war that they should take part
in. In addition, he is extremely upset from the delay of their salaries and other benefits that the
USA promised from them, after being used as a sacrificial pawn in order to win the war. He felt
that the deaths of his fellow soldiers were starting to become meaningless, and can’t forget about
everything even after 43 years had passed.

MODULE 5

A. Essay Writing
The issue on the West Philippine Sea/South China Sea had always been a controversial
topic in the news even from the last administration. Historically, even if it was named South
China Sea, a lot of countries from the Southeast Asia share the resources there because
nobody owns it and whomever found something there, they own it. Thus, it was obvious that
the countries who benefited from it would not like the arbitral ruling of granting it to the
Philippines.

International laws were made in order to resolve matters with different countries in a
peaceful manner. However, there is actually no way of enforcing such law because a country
is different from a single person. If a country feel wronged, it will wage a war.

Hence, I do not think it was wise to stamp ownership on that sea. The Philippines has no
military prowess that could protect it. It should only take ownership on what it can protect
because the other countries could act however they want without repercussion since the
international laws cannot really force them to stop from doing so. In my opinion, the ruling,
though seems beneficial to our country, is actually harmful.

B. Abstract

The Plastic Solution

This article talks about the issue on environmental pollution caused by plastics. Plastics
are items that takes hundreds of years to decompose. It would not be long till our planet
would be filled with garbage. However, it is almost impossible now to consume anything
without it. We should address this problem by taking simple steps on our own.
