Japaanese is not directly relatted to any otther languag ge or family o of languagess. The Japan nese adopted Chinese
characters, Kanjii, in the 3rd century
c A.D.,, but there iss no evidencce of a linguisstic relationsship between the two
languages. Japanese does share s some grammatical
g with Korean;; however, no direct link has been
similarities w

Writtten Langu
uage
Japa anese is writtten in a mixture of Kanji (Chinese cha aracters), Hi ragana, and Katakana. K Kanji is a writting system
adap pted from Chhinese; Kanji characters represent
r booth meaning g and sound. Often, one Kanji has mo ore than onee
meaning and pro onunciation. Hiragana an nd Katakana are both ba sic sets of 4 46 syllabic ch
haracters. Thhese 46
characters repre esent 46 diffe erent soundss. Hiragana and
a Katakan na represent the same co orresponding g sounds,
but HHiragana is used
u to write
e native Japaanese wordss and Katakaana is used to ds of foreign origin ("loan

word ds") and somme onomatop poeia. Also, the
t Romanized alphabett is used for ttransliteratio on purposes as well as
