(a) (i) Mole:

Award 1KC for any one of the following


definitions:

 Mole is the amount of substance which contains


as many entities as there are carbon atoms in
12 g of carbon-12.

 Mole of any substance contains 6.20 x 1023
particles.
 Mole is the amount of substance that contains
6.20 x 1023 particles (Avogadro’s
 Constant) particles in that substance.

Molar mass is the mass of 1 mole of a substance in


g/mol or gmol-1 (1KC)

(ii) Mass of Aspirin = 0.20 x 180 = 36 g (1UK) 1

(iii) No of moles of Aspirin = 18.0 ÷ 180 = 0.1 mol (1UK) 1

(b) Molar ratio of aspirin to ethanoic acid = 1 : 1 (1UK)


Hence 0.1 mols of aspirin produces 0.1 mols of ethanoic
acid (1UK)

Mass of ethanoic acid= 0.1 x 60.0 = 6g (1UK)

(ii) Use: Alkanes are used mainly as fuels or solvents. 1

(iii) Structural isomerism is displayed by compounds that


have the same molecular formulae (1KC) but different 2
structural formulae (1KC).

(iv) The two possible structural isomers are 2-


methylbutane or 2,2-dimethylpropane,

(b) (i) The presence of the polar COOH group (1KC) in


Compound Q (CH3CH2COOH) makes it soluble in water, 2

 Fermentation is the conversion of sugars into ethanol

 In rum manufacturing the starting material is molasses
(1KC). Accept also sugar or glucose.
 Yeast contains an enzyme (1KC) which catalyzes the

 Reaction takes place at 25 C – 37 C. Accept any

Explanation: Metal A is higher than Fe, which is 2

(iii) Metal A will be extracted via electrolysis. (1UK) 1

Metal B will be obtained EITHER via reduction of 1
