Summary of the case
There was a big confrontation when Mr. Rehman assumed the ownership and the management of his parent’s
business instead of his father’s cousin Mr. Sayeed. Workers who were suited to complete a big order had left the
job upon instigation by Mr. Sayeed. Rehman’s tasks were to make up the deficiency in workforce and to create a
manpower plan. However he needed help in modernizing the business and making up the manpower planning.
After discussion with the Professor who was helping him in the manpower plan it was decided to introduce the
concept of retirement.

Facts of the case

 There is a vacancy of 15 employees out of which 13 workers were suitable for the big decorative brass
pieces order.
 Workers who are now in the age group of above 60 years will eventually be retired.
 For Modernization planning it requires one mechanical engineer and at least 7 workers who can operate in
new machines should be introduced in the company.
 There is adequate Demand of product in the market.

There are multiple solutions to this; they are discussed below:
Solution 1
Short term plan
Recruit a good engineering graduate and 7 workers know how to operate the new machines.
Long term plan
Identify some workers who are in the age group of less than 45 years old and train them to operate in new
machines.

Solution 2

Convince the workers who have left the organization to comeback by increasing their wages or by giving them
incentives.
Long term plan
Formulate proper job description for the engineering graduates who are supposed to modernize the manufacturing
process.

Retirement policy:
As Sayeed and Bano went to Haj Pilgrimage, workers who are above 60 years should also retire and go on a

The main issue of this case was to introduce the concept of retirement and make up the deficiency of workers.
Now, merely announcing the retirement of workers will adversely affects the environmental culture as well
as in the mind of young employees.
Hence, changing the perception of existing retirement life style will be a best way to address the issue.
As far as the workforce deficiency is concerned pursuing the left out workers will not be wise. Existing
workers might also imitate the same situation for some added benefits.
It would be better if the workers who resigned can be made to come back to the organization without any
added benefits and providing training to the existing workers so that they can also operate the new machines.
However there are several things which should be carefully looked into
