“Reading Comprehension”

According to Tomie DePaola an American writer and illustrator Reading is important because if you can

learn anything about everything and everything about anything. It tells that we should practice reading, so

that we can gain more knowledge, it also means that we can learn if we should wish to. By exerting more

effort, energy and time to practice reading in order for us to have a knowledge in the book we are reading

and getting understanding to really have a deeper comprehension.

Without comprehension, reading is so disgusting and frustrating for us. We cannot understand what really

means is just like we read in a useless and pointless exercise in word calling. According to Texas Education

Agency The purpose of reading is comprehension — getting meaning from written text. A major goal of

reading comprehension is to improve their knowledge, and ability to comprehend what they read has a

profound effect on their entire lives, and the Texas Education Agency added that it also helps the students

to develop their knowledge, skills, and experiences that they must have if they are to become competent

and enthusiastic readers.

Base to the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) survey Filipino students got a rating

of 340 points in the survey, which is lower than the average 487 points. Majority of Filipinos aged 15 are

in Grade 9. This can tell that many Filipino students especially in Grade 9 level can be classify to those poor

readers who are often begin to read without setting goals. They seldom consider how best to read a

particular type of text. They also experience difficulty in terms of decoding and so have difficulty reading

the words of their texts accurately, typically they do not think about or reflect on what they have read, they

are not exerting effort to know more about on their topic. The Texas Education Agency says that The

cumulative effect of these difficulties is that poor readers often lose confidence in their ability to read.

Because reading is difficult for them, poor readers cannot and do not read widely. As a result, they are

exposed to much less text than are good readers and so receive much less practice reading. Further, the

practice they do receive is often frustrating, because many of the texts they are asked to read are too

difficult for them.

Reading comprehension is very relevant today as a 21st century leaner, there a lot of changes that we need

to be aware, and we can achieve it if we are able to understand everything by reading with comprehension,

it helps us to boost our self confidence that may lead to be a competent and enthusiastic person.
