Negative Effects of Social Media

Social media is following the same line of action as Electronic and Print Media for Opinion Formation in
the Negative
In the entire world, everybody has tongue but not the words and ideas of his own and follows the words
and the ideas of those who are influential and are in majority and does not follow those who are not
influential and are in minority, sometime irrespective of the fact that majority may be wrong. Public opinion
has been a function of the print and electronic meida but now this power has shifted and is sharply shifting
towards social media.
Social media are computer-mediated technologies that allow the creating and sharing of information,
ideas, career interests and other forms of expression via virtual communities and networks. The variety
of stand-alone and built-in social media services currently available introduces challenges of definition.
However, there are some common features.

Social media are interactive Web 2.0 Internet-based applications.

User-generated content, such as text posts or comments, digital photos or videos, and data
generated through all online interactions, are the lifeblood of social media.

Users create service-specific profiles for the website or app that are designed and maintained
by the social media organization.

Social media facilitate the development of online social networks by connecting a user's profile
with those of other individuals and/or groups.

Social media use web-based and mobile technologies on smartphones and tablet computers to create
highly interactive platforms through which individuals, communities and organizations can share, co-
create, discuss, and modify user-generated content or pre-made content posted online. They introduce
substantial and pervasive changes to communication between businesses, organizations, communities
and individuals. Social media changes the way individuals and large organizations communicate. These
changes are the focus of the emerging field of technoself studies. In America, a survey reported that 84
percent of adolescents in America have a Facebook account.
The use of use media is evident from the following encyclopedic figures of the popular social media cites

Public opinion from the powerful platform of media cannot be overemphasized as the role has been
played by the electronic and print media and now social media enjoys the most of its part, it plays its role
in the negative as well as positive.
There is a story to illustrate the fact that once a simpleton villager was going to the nearby city to sell his
goat and was carrying it on his shoulders so that it might not look weak and he could have some more
money with its fresh look. He was on the way when three swindler saw him and planned to robe him of his
goat. They made a plan and every one of them stood after a distance of one mile. When the countryman
passed by the first swindler, he asked him “dear why are you carrying a dog on your shoulders, the villager
scolded him severely, “have you gone blind, it is a goat and not a dog”. The villager took his way saying
these words. On the way, the second swindler, said to him, brother, it is not good to carry a dog on one’s
shoulder, it makes pretty bad impression, the bucolic, admonished the second, but there developed some
doubt whether he himself in senses or not. On the way, when the third swindler came near him and said
sympathetically, “friend what is wrong with your dog, are you taking it some veterinary doctor! The tird
swindler took the remarks of third swindler as real and threw the goat on the ground and began to run
madly that what has happened with his mind that he was carrying a dog on his shoulders!
An individual having affordability of a smart phone and social networking is busy most of the time with
social media for getting update about the happening of the world from new promotion of the socks to the
American presidential elections, from the status updating of a friend on Facebook to the tweet of a
renowned politician on his twitter account. From an advisement of the hair comb to the speech of the UNO,
Secretary General from the news conference of the president to the leaks of the political scandals. From
the posts of a family function to the pictures of university convocation, from the new arrivals in the stores
to the raids on the stores finding substandard things, from an individual to a society, from a group to nation,
from local bodies to the international organizations, from a small shop to mega stores, from a newspaper
to magazines, from a guild to a forum, social media has been adopted as a means of expression all about
the concerning are engaged in. All are in a race to have the maximum of their coverage to the world from
the platform of social media, in doing, they even bypass all standards of morality, all norms of society, all
standards of authenticity and all elements of truth, just aiming that it should be response evoking
irrespective of the fact that either it is good or bad, either public or private, other harmful or beneficial,
either or in the best for the masse or in the worst for the masses.

The print and electronic media has largely been charged by the masses at large that it plays in the hands of
the government and many other influential people i.e. politicians, capitalists, industrialists, feudalist and
businessmen who use it to form public opinion in their advantage. Many of them give huge advertisement
and get propaganda in their favour and against their opponents, many hire columnists who write columns
in the favour of them who paid them and make public opinion in their interest, all these go the interest of
the public and try to go in the favour of who may not be the good and the true. This bad factor caused the
people lose their confidence in the print and electronic media and people turned to social media for the
some genuine and personal opinion taking it an unbiased platform but here the circumstances also have
turned to reverse side.

The automated account generate the messages in the favour and against the item, product, person, group,
party and view that either to be promoted or demoted. The other people who are engaged with it take
these real and find that the “liked” and “disliked” is in this much number and that this much people are
liking it and this much people are disliking it, get affected by these automated message and act according
to the majority opinion and the purpose of the people with sinister design gets fullfilled.
The same happened during the presidential elections of America where There may be even more problems
for Twitter than what real live people are doing on the app. A recent study conducted by a research team
at Oxford University found that during the period of time between the first presidential debate and the
second, one-third of pro-Trump tweets and nearly one-fifth of pro-Clinton tweets came from automated
accounts. Douglas Guilbeault, one of the researchers in the study, told NPR that hurts political discourse.
"They reinforce the sense of polarization in the atmosphere," he said. "Because bots don't tend to be
mild-mannered, judicial critics. They are programmed to align themselves with an agenda that is
unambiguously representative of a particular party. ... It's all 'Crooked Hillary' and 'Trump is a puppet.' "
So, if Twitter is a bunch of Post-it notes thrown on the ground, we now have to consider which of those
notes are even real.
